Josh Brolin Discusses Missing Out On The Role Of BATMAN To Ben Affleck

Josh Brolin is currently menacing the MCU as the Mad Titan, Thanos, but at one time he was in the running to play the Caped Crusader in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. In an interview with MTV he reveals whether or not he has any regrets about losing the role to Ben Affleck...

In the buildup to Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder officially announcing their pick for a new Dark Knight for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, quite a few actors were mentioned in connection with the role - but only 2 were every confirmed to be serious contenders: Ben Affleck, and Josh Brolin. Obviously one of them landed the part, and the other did not.

Brolin revealed that he was indeed in the running a couple of years ago, and very nearly nabbed it, but never really discussed how he felt about missing the opportunity to put his own stamp on such an iconic character. While chatting to MTV at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Sicario actor admits that he'd like to be more competitive about these things, but doesn't feel any jealousy at all. He also says he's "beyond curious" to see what Affleck does under the cape 'n cowl next year.

“I don’t have that thing, I wish I did. It would just be more interesting and more competitive, damn him. As much as you guys want to be pissed off, be pissed off, it’s all good. Start a f–king riot. I’m really curious [to see] what he does. Beyond curious.”

As are we all! Do you guys think Brolin would have made a good Batman? Would you have preferred if he got the part over Affleck? Sound off below.

I'm not jealous. After starring in Jonah Hex, I'm now very humble and appreciative of every role I get.

Cool, can't wait for B v S

I really hope they get Thanos right, and Brolin is completely capable. Laughing and smiling totally fits Thanos

But if Thanos somehow starts cracking jokes and one-liners, you may as well bring in the Thanos-Copter

He was likely never gonna be Batman since his ex-wife is Diane Lane who's already Ma Kent and they had a nasty divorce.

Plus with Affleck, now we got Chris Terrio writing the script and now Brolin will be Thanos.

I think it's fair to say both DC and Marvel wins in Brolin not being Batman.

Though I would have been interested in what Brolin would have done as Batman.

Sicario looks good. I love a good drug cartel movie.

@LEVITIKUZ

I think Thanos fits Brolin better though, did you see Oldboy? I don't really think that movie is Brolin's fault because he was good in it, but I was expecting more out of that, the original is still the best version

I think Affleck is going to be the definitive Batman/Bruce though, can't wait

I always thought Josh Brolin fit perfect for an older Bruce Wayne long before his name was in the mix.

@Gusto Having hemorrhoids is "having" a bad ass... not the same thing as "being" badass. Common misstake.

I would have preferred Josh Brolin in a vacuum, but without Ben Affleck, we wouldn't have gotten Chris Terrio, so I think it all worked out for the best.

Also, I don't think Brolin "lost" the role. I believe there was a mutual decision, which, as a lot of commenters have pointed out, may have had something to do with Diane Lane.

@Jollem

I've been thinking about the Extremis arc lately, I really want to see a closer adaptation of that, or at least something that takes more from the comic. It really could translate on screen

I dont know. Brolin seems like he might be a little stiff to play Batman. I'm glad Affleck got the role

They've got to expand on what was done in IM3. It was handled poorly somewhat. I think it was handled so poorly, Marvel may never revisit it. I would love to see either Iron Man The Five Nightmares where he battles Ezekiel Stane

@Jollem

Yeah, looking forward to the MCU and seeing how everything plays out, but I'm hoping it becomes less Stark/RDJ-centric soon, after more characters come into play

After seeing the B v S and Suicide Squad trailers, that's really where my excitement is right now.

@ComicsBornAndBred

Totally, I also would love to see them elaborate on some of Tony's suits and what they can do too, they have so much more meaning in the comics and they just kind of rushed through that in IM 3

Im still happy as heck that I was the one who showed him a photo shopped pic of him in the bat costume.. he LOVED it.. That was a very good moment. Would've made a better Batman than Thanos in my opinion.

@DrKinsolving I think after civil war, this guy should really be the focal point if the MCU as inifinty war nears. I think his leadership will be key in the coming war.

Also think, these two should be positioned to start being showcased more than Iron man and thor...become real strong supporting characters, until Cap dies and I thibk BP should take a leadership role in the avengers once Cap passes. I wanna see Cap and BP's budding friendship and repsest for one another be displayed in civil war. Have Cap tell Panther and acknowledge that Panther is someone even Cap admires being a king, warrior and hero.

Definitely, really hoping that Black Panther has a major role moving forward, and no dead Cap, haha, not for awhile at least. Then they need to get shared rights and cast Lupita as Storm, I really want to see that on screen

Brolin as Batman would've been pretty damn awesome. But i'm glad Affleck got it.

Don't worry Mr Brolin, you're the Mad Titan now.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 9/15/2015, 9:43 AM
@DrKinsolving Why can't we get a Scarlet Witch QS shared studio situation with storm?!?! We need her as Panther's powerful goddess of a wife. If you want to explain her powers in the MCU, have her be an inhuman who thinks shes some kind of weather god...maybe fled Attilan for some reason or was cast out or left on earth, and is worshipped as a goddess in Africa....meets panther etc...

Lupita as Storm would be out of this world

She should be portrayed as a goddess who Thor even reveres for her mastery of weather

I am much more disappointed that someone else besides Snyder didn't get to run the show. Although WB's wants their NOlanized universe because hey think that's what will sell long term so it probably doesn't make any difference anyway.

@ComicsBornAndBred

Totally, exactly man. That would be amazing, I feel like since she was Black Panther's Wife in the comics that should hold some weight for a shared rights deal, those rights deals are so [frick]ing confusing

Get over yourself! As much as I love Storm.....she reveres Thor not the other way around. At the end of the day he is a god. She's a pretend "goddess." Last thing we need is for Surtur to come down an kill her when they prop her up as a "goddess" and she's not up to the task!
