More From Chris Evans on a Fantastic Four Reboot

Chris Evans would be happy to put on "those blue f--ing tights" once again should Fantastic Four get the reboot, especially with a director like Chris Nolan on board.

Recently, while discussing his role in another comic book movie, the adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, actor Chris Evans was asked about the possibility of reprising the role of Johnny Storm/Human Torch if Fantastic Four were to be rebooted. Evans said:

"I guess it would depend. I mean I’m never against revisiting, well I guess I should say not yet, I’m never against revisiting genres or character types. If I played a doctor in one movie I wouldn’t be against playing a doctor again if the director was the right director. I think at the end of the day you’ve got to work with the directors. I do what I do because I like making good movies. It’s fun to act but if you just loved acting alone you could sit in your room and act. You could act in a vacuum. You want to make good products. You want to make good films. I love movies and good movies come from good directors and like I said since there isn’t this massive surplus of films out there, if a good director offers you a chance to make a good movie, you take it even if you say well I just played a character like that. Who cares? You’re a great director. Scott Pilgrim, I played characters similar to that guy but no f--ing way I’m going to say no to this guy. I’m doing your movie. So if Fantastic Four got rebooted and [The Dark Knight director] Christopher Nolan was going to direct it and said do you want to play Johnny Storm again, I’d be in those blue f--ing tights."

If Nolan was to direct a FF movie, I'm pretty sure Chris Evans wouldn't be in it. Nolan would probably use Michael caine as the human torch! lol.
supermarioworldE - 9/14/2009, 10:08 AM
I like his attitude! Man, a Chris Nolan directed FF movie would be the bomb diggity!!!
Bijous - 9/14/2009, 10:11 AM
I liked Evans as Johnny Storm. If Nolan directed FF, not only would it improve the film in many ways, hopefully a darker story, definitely a darker doom with, with a deeper voice and accent but I think it would improve Evans as well. I could see something with the Skrulls. But Cameos are a must, Peter Parker should of showed up somewhere in the FF, even a mention of his name by Johnny Storm, or Richards. But I enjoyed Evans in the role, more than I enjoyed Julian McMahon as Victor von Doom.
CrashTest - 9/14/2009, 10:17 AM
@Crash: Yeah, McMahon sucked as Doom!
Bijous - 9/14/2009, 10:23 AM
in my opinion, the only other CBM to suck more than these was ghost rider.
CorndogBurglar - 9/14/2009, 10:37 AM
hes basically the only one in both movies that fit the role perfectly. all the others were ok for the most part. Jessica Alba was chosen b/c she is hot. Since they picked Ryan Reynolds for Green Lantern. I would cast Chris Evans as The Flash. He is funny and just seems to fit the role for that type of character.
LaffaTaffa - 9/14/2009, 10:43 AM
All new cast please! and this time make a CG Thing. The real costume doesnt work anymore. Its not convincing as rock. Wasnt emmersive enough. Johnny Storm wasnt all bad but I personally would like to see another actor take the role to a better place :)
theartofoneness - 9/14/2009, 10:47 AM
Man... I was so bummed when he said he wouldn't be back for the reboot. He really nailed Johnny Storm. That was one of the few things about those movies I really thought turned out good.

Oh well. Maybe the next guy will be as good but I doubt it. At the time I didn't like McMahon for Doom but he grew on me. No the problem with Doom is not the actor. It's the movie version itself. It's so wrong on so many different levels. And since Doom is such a prominent Marvel chracter, that's a pretty huge screw up.
DarthMulder - 9/14/2009, 10:49 AM
Laffa Taffa, stop shouting dude! I agree with the flash comment.
wards - 9/14/2009, 10:53 AM
im not shouting. it is a certain text style i prefer. if you dont like it then dont read what i have to say. shouting is in caps text.

@brent
i like your articles buddy. keep up the good work
LaffaTaffa - 9/14/2009, 10:55 AM
corndogburgler, you da man and all but do you really think that Ghost Rider was worse than The Human Torch as Super Skrull and Dr. Doom ad Collossus meets Electro? Really? And Cumulactus the planet eating flatulence?

You have to think in terms of scale. If we were to list all the things that were messed up about Ghost Rider and then compared them to a list of everything that was messed up about both FF movies, the FF side would be hundreds of items longer. In terms of the scale level of major screw ups it's really hard to beat FF2. Really only X3 comes close.
DarthMulder - 9/14/2009, 10:59 AM
Evans was absolutely spot-on as the Torch- so much so, that now when I read the comics I hear Johnny speaking with his voice- I liked Chiklis but he was a bit too short and stocky- and the suit was a little on the shite side. I agree with those above who though McMahon was a poor choice for Doom- what was Tim Story thinking? also what in god's name was smoking when he decided to put a Latina girl in a blonde wig and get her to play caucasian?- that's just weird- like Ben Kingsley as Mohandas Gandhi or Downey Jr in blackface- quite astonishingly wrong
betaraybob - 9/14/2009, 11:01 AM
ryan reyolds for the whole fantasic four
jamie quinlan - 9/14/2009, 11:02 AM
I agree, Evans being cast as Johnny Storm was a high point of the films.

@Laffa: Thanks! And, yeah, I could see him as Flash (Wally West).
Brent Sprecher - 9/14/2009, 11:04 AM
TOLD YA!!!

He'd do it in a MEGA second!!!

Infact i like all the FF cast except DOOM!

DOOM 'NIP TUCK' was LAME!!!

Forget DOOM, just do FF3 with FRESH Villains!!!

MOLE MAN ATTACKS MANHATTAN! Touch! ; )
LEEE777 - 9/14/2009, 11:09 AM
Evans and Chiklis, in my opinion were perfect casting for the FF. How about if they re-tooled the FF instead and just got rid of Alba? Eventhough she is hot I never liked her as The Invisible Woman.
necrosage2005 - 9/14/2009, 11:10 AM
yea the first film was ok not great just something you watch when nothing else is on tv the second was just plain trash i'd rather watch battlefield earth and yea giving jessica alba a blond wig and blue eyes just didn't make any sense they should have just gotten jennifer aniston or sharon stone to play that character it wouldn't have made the movies any worse
DoIlookLIkeIGiveAFuk - 9/14/2009, 11:10 AM

Any other HUMAN TORCH will just SUCK without him!!!

FOX should just do friggin; FF3 and let MARVEL once they get it back do a friggin' reboot! ; D

I liked ALBA lol!
LEEE777 - 9/14/2009, 11:11 AM
And he'd be a SH!TE FLASH! If he's gonna do a DC character he should play a completely different character, WALLY and JOHNNY are too much alike, apart from POWERS lol. He needs to get he's teeth into a real completely different role! ; )
LEEE777 - 9/14/2009, 11:22 AM
I like his attitude.. Top man
Imran - 9/14/2009, 11:26 AM
I like it.
Ozymandias - 9/14/2009, 11:32 AM
LEEE777, what would you have him play, then?
necrosage2005 - 9/14/2009, 11:39 AM
everybody on here always says "stick to the source material", well fantastic four did that. its not a dark toned comic like batman. nolan might make a good movie but it would be a horrible fantastic four movie. you either believe movies should stick to the source material or you dont. that applies to all comicbook movies equally.
superdog - 9/14/2009, 11:40 AM
superdog, I liked BOTH of the FF's BECAUSE they weren't dark. The comic books aren't dark, why should the movies? Just because Nolan made Batman dark(er) doesn't mean that that is ALL that he can do. The previous incarnations were comical and kind of outrageous. He made his realistic. What they were saying was that he knows how to make a movie well.
necrosage2005 - 9/14/2009, 11:51 AM
Eugene Levy for Mole Man-
Don't tell me you can't see it...
betaraybob - 9/14/2009, 11:54 AM
I think that he'd be a great Mole Man! Good choice!
necrosage2005 - 9/14/2009, 12:07 PM
The First Director didn't have a Big enough Budget in those moives.

He also falid to bring the Non Stop ACTION/FIGHT SCENCES with the FF...

Thats what was REally missing in those movies.

The Cast was Good...its just lacked the that Epic Action. I didn't like Galatus as a Big Cloud eithr but I appears as though he didn't have a Big enough Budget to really go all out and give us what we really wanted in that.

Hopefully these new FF movies will get a bigger budget since its Nolan.
NubaX - 9/14/2009, 12:09 PM
Necro @ Dunno lol.

BETA @ Good choice!

NUBA @ Yeah cast was solid, ya right the budget let 'em down big time.
LEEE777 - 9/14/2009, 12:15 PM
although I do feel that the impact of the Mole Man may have been somewhat undermined by the..well..Underminer- I would give both legs to see Doom done well- played by a great European actor like Max von Sydow (if only he wasn't too old)- Annihilus would also be ace (and the first person who suggests Ryan Reynolds in any capacity, satirical or otherwise, gets clobbered)
betaraybob - 9/14/2009, 12:15 PM
Keven's Mom for the Mole Man.... if Nolan Directs the new FF movie.

can't you just imagine him having awkward conversations about the 'birds and the bees' with a bemused and clearly embarrassed Mr. Fantastic? (played by Jason Biggs)
betaraybob - 9/14/2009, 12:36 PM
Dog@ i agree :)

I still liked the first 2.....they were fun, just like the FF comics are fun. Evans is a good actor and im sure he would be great in any future superhero character he will be cast....cus he will :)
teabag - 9/14/2009, 12:47 PM
The FF were not my favorite comic to read way back when but I know a lot about the team. These movies were not accurate on several fronts. I was very disappointed with Dr. Doom and Ben Grimm's film versions. It simply shoud not have been allowed. How the hell is Ben smaller than the Torch? Dr.Doom is the ruler of his homeland but there was never any real mention of this. I won't even get into Galactacloud. I'll never believe it was about budget. The studio execs had to put their crappy ideas in and what they think is cool. Let people who care about the characters handle the movies.
hewilldefytheirgravity - 9/14/2009, 12:47 PM
I WASNT PARTICULARLY A FAN OF BOTH FF MOVIES (THEY FUKED UP TOO MANY THINGS) IM ALL FOR A REBOOOT, BUT PLEASE DONT LET NOLAN NEAR THIS FRANCHISE, ALTHOUGH I THOUGHT HIS WORK ON THE BATMAN MOVIES WERE BRILLIANT. HE LIKES TO KEEP HIS FILMS AS REAL AS POSSIBLE, I MEAN HE MADE THE JOKER INTO SOME CLOWN THAT PAINTS HIS FACE (LEDGER WAS BRILLIANT THOUGH). THE FF POWERS ARE TOO FANTASTIC TO BE BASED ON REALISM. REALLY GUYS HED RUIN IT NOW GIVE THE FF TO RON HOWARD, OR JAMES CAMERON, OR EVEN GULLIERMO DEL TORO THOSE GUYS UNDERSTAND THE FANTASY ASPECT OF THEIR CHARACTERS. LOOK ANY BODY BUT RHATNNER DA FUKIN HAK
10THTIGER - 9/14/2009, 12:58 PM

BETA @ Yeah!! ; D

TEABAG @ I'm with you dude! The first two was FUN!!!

FF is supposed to be FUN! Not DARK!

FOX is gonna F this up like their last SUPERHERO movie.

Damn.
LEEE777 - 9/14/2009, 1:02 PM
why do so many people want to see every comic book movie go dark?

it worked for Batman because the comics and the character are dark.

Characters like the Fantastic Four and Superman have never been dark like the world of Batman, it would make no sense to change the characters just the current fad in Hollywood is to make characters dark because Chris Nolan made 2 great Batman movies.
l0rdleg0las - 9/14/2009, 1:08 PM
Mark Strong as DOOM!!!
InSpace - 9/14/2009, 1:09 PM
Without a doubt the first two FF films were crap! They may have been "fun" (though i found them more like a torture that fun) but they were badly acted, directed and made! The only good part of either film was Chris Evans!

Theres no need to make the FF dark...just make it a little more mature! Mark Waid's run on the FF a few years back is how the FF movie should be!!!
joshw24 - 9/14/2009, 1:10 PM
yeah um, a chris nolan directed FF movie would be terrible. hes great, but not for that
fotc - 9/14/2009, 1:12 PM
THE THING was great an the only bad part was DOOM!

Clearly your not much of a FF fan JOSH lol.
LEEE777 - 9/14/2009, 1:13 PM
LEE: I love the FF comic books but i really hated the first movie!!! The FF and Doom's origins were handled dreadfully, the story was idiotic and as for the second movie...well, it was definitely better - right up until Doom being healed (dont they realise that the biggest part of the character is his scarred face that he blames Reed for!?!) and 'cloud' Galactus!!!
joshw24 - 9/14/2009, 1:25 PM
Let's have Marvel Zombies Haha!

Reed Richards infecting his own family!! :-|
Imran - 9/14/2009, 1:39 PM
I don't remember anyone saying they should be dark.
But if they did i would have to disagree.
That would have been even worse.
DarthMulder - 9/14/2009, 1:41 PM
DOOM yes, i agree with you there, but the FF movies had the FEEL of the comic books, much more than alot of other comic book movies and everyone knew and was told you don't see GALACTUS in it before the movie even came out!?!

Yes it would've been sweet but everyone was told he's saved for the SILVER SURFER movie!!?

An SILVER SURFER was Fantastic lol, he was perfect!!!

I really dont believe nor should you that FOX will do any better the second time round, they will still want their own version again!

Better to do FF3 an wait for MARVEL to do it reboot style!
LEEE777 - 9/14/2009, 1:48 PM
LEE: i actually had no idea that we wouldnt see Galactus in FF2 so when the cloud thing happenned it was hard to contain my disbelief/rage, lol!! I agree Silver Surfer was handled well but there was no excuse for the cloud IMO!!!

Though they sort of had the right "feel" i think that that was overshadowed by the appalling acting (Jessica Alba, the guy who played Reed and that moron off Nip/Tuck)

And yes, Fox's reboot probably wont be all that great but as long as they keep making FF movies, Marvel dont get the rights back do they!?
joshw24 - 9/14/2009, 2:08 PM
Just watch the Roger Corman FF and you will understand why some of the changes were made :)
teabag - 9/14/2009, 2:23 PM
Chris was the best thing about the FF movies, him and Silver Surfer. Galactus never was a cloud in the comics! Never!

Doom is a European monarch with an accent not Nip/tuck flat-acting dude! Doom is supposed to be scary, with a powerful persona!
DDD - 9/14/2009, 3:25 PM
I'm indifferent to a reboot or a sequel. I don't care which way they go.

BUT!

They HAVE to recast the characters. All of them. I know Evans was perfect, but they need to sever all ties to the previous, and terrible, cast.

Both FF movies sucked. The CGI sucked, the acting was worse (barring Evans and Chiklis), the story was flatly written, and they portrayed Doom and Reed unbelievably wrong.

Billy Crudup for Mr. Fantastic

Elizabeth Banks for Invisible Woman

Jeffrey Dean Morgan for the Thing

Scott Porter (maybe) for Human Torch

joshw24 - 9/14/2009, 3:48 PM
the original cast was good for the first one

just needed a better doom story
lowflams3137 - 9/14/2009, 4:02 PM
It's really sad, but I have to agree with Tyler - they couldn't really keep Evans, even though he was spot on...
Kyos - 9/14/2009, 4:09 PM
I bought them for $5 each on dvd. Would not shell out for bluerays for those movies, and frankly they're just a notch above Elektra for me - well, 2 showed potential aside from "Cumulactus the planet eating flatulence?" as DarthMulder put it lol (though I understand that was his original form in the comics). And not enough money to make those movies? Look at District 9 (granted the technology has dramatically cheapened since FF1). Probably the bulk of the money was spent on Mr. Fantastic's god awful effects.

Evans was for me, BY FAR, the best thing about the movie - he nailed it to the wall. And I really like his attitude towards it. Seems to have class and dedication like Hugh Jackman. I actually do like Iaohanoahnn Gruffonohololden (sp? lol) as an actor and as Mr. Fantastic. Alba is hot but a sub par fit. Chiklis as Thing is satisfactory, pretty decent really.

Thought McMahon was terrible, monotone, very stilted, forced, and insincere. I like your guys' choice of Mark Strong - let's see how he does in Holmes. Also would like to throw out Jason Isaacs, even though he gets thrown out there for every bad guy. Eugene Levy would make a great Mole Man, but Jason Biggs as Mr. Fantastic, I dunno - sounds like "Fantastic Four Pie". We will get to see Mr. Fantastic stick his weiner in the Galacticus cloud haha... dumb joke, I know =)
Nolan would be better suited for Xmen, than any other Marvel franchise that I can think of (would've been great for Iron Man or Hulk too). It's grounded in genetics and the concept is actually plausible with where research is at right now.

@CorndogBurglar - Ghost Rider sucked, yes it did and could have been MUCH better. But I think that formula has potential, and with the lessons learned from Iron Man and TDK, if Cage stays on board (from his interviews, he seems to be really rejuvinated and serious about doing any great comic character justice). I felt Eva Mendez was a good fit, and you can't go wrong with Sam Elliot, but Peter Fonda as Mephistopheles was god awful - send him back to the grave lol. The worst waste of an actor in that movie was Wes Bentley, the kid from American Beauty - he's got loads of talent, and is a role snob like DDL - and they ended up making his character like Robert Pattinson in Twilight.

@betaraybob - oh yeah and Ben Kingsley IS most certainly half-Indian and half-European, "politically correct" and poetic for the role of Ghandi considering - one of the best casting choices and performances of this generation imo (9 out of ten critics agree lol) =).
48and2 - 9/14/2009, 4:37 PM
I'll post on this thread becasue no way will I EVER grace a CatPain AnalErica misogynist thread.

That being said, I would be pleased with a FF reboot but am not all that sure it is really necessary. I thought that the first two movies were pretty enjoyable, but just flaccid. I thought they dug too deep into the Torch/Thiung rivalry leaning far too much on comice relief, von Doom, disappointed me because of the lack of a Latverian accent AND no actual "magic", and Reed Richards needs FAR more grey in his temples.

The Fantasticar was cool until they had to split it up, and Sue Storm flies like a daredevil not racking up a single flight hour? Puh-LEEZ.

Galactus flat-out pissed me OFF. A nebulous cloud? THIS is the best Tim story could do? Plus, not a lot of Norrin Radd and Zenn-La, missed a HUGE opportunity there.

My whole concept of what the entire arc of Marvel movies hsould be is a massive lead-up to Planet Hulk and World War Hulk. I am a HUGE Black Bolt fan, as well as very happy anytime to see Dr. Strange, and the idea of a battle between Hulk and Mr Fantastic/Black Bolt/Iron Man/Doctor Strange is just flat-out box office big-screen MAGIC.

I would be pleased to see FF pulled into the lead-up to Avengers, even though they are not members, the whole concept of a world with multiple superheroes and mutants running around is tremendously appealing. Plus, the Skree and Krull always hooked me into the storyline, and I would love to see that angle explored as well.

Disney/MArvel (gods BELOW I want to puke!) needs to look past Avengers and have that film fit into a bigger "picture". RE-working FF a little bit, re-introducing Victor von Doom as he REALLY is and then tapping into the massive universe of the Galactus/Beyonder/Heralds characters offers films that could span way beyond 2050.

Think BIG!!!
bropous - 9/14/2009, 5:17 PM
And one thing that I think worked VERY well from FF1 and FF2: Casting. I cannot fault a single casting decision for the Fantastic Four (Victor von Doom? weeeeeellllll......no.) Heck, I even think they got the Silver Surfer down pretty damn good.

Problem was not the cast, but the totally CRAPPY scripts. Could they NOT get a decent screenplay out of the Marvel Comics bullpen? 'Nuff Said!
bropous - 9/14/2009, 5:20 PM
I agree with Pooch, Josh and some others(sorry cant remember all the sensible posters). If Nolan made a FF movie it wouldn't be a FF movie! It would be his dark vision of what those characters COULD be but have never been in the comic. The tone of the previous movies was fine, it was everything else(bar Torch, Surfer and Thing was ok) that sucked donkey balls.

Lee the fact that you liked Alba as Sue speaks volumes! Not only was she absolutely awful in it, she was nothing like the Sue Storm from the comic you claim to be such a fan of. Hell i'v only read a handful and i know that.
Rorschach01 - 9/14/2009, 5:30 PM
HEY I LIKE THAT STYLE OF HUMAN TORCH IN THE PIC, NOW THAT WOULD BE COOL TO SEE ON FILM
GUNSMITH - 9/14/2009, 5:42 PM
I liked the movies but its cuz i was never a fan of the comics. I can be honest and say Sue Storm looked terrible. Yet Alba is a hottie... shibazz confused :( Reed was Boring and his intellect was not intimidating in the slightes. Chickliss should have been SuperSized and Doom was all wrong. Still liked the movies though. shibazz very confused .(
shibazz - 9/14/2009, 6:00 PM
I would only change jessica alba.
Weiner123 - 9/14/2009, 7:08 PM
Why do they need to reboot... just make another film with the same casts... change the director.. and don't or barely mention the last two films. I just feel that reboots are cop outs. In the comics we accept any new direction with different creative team, and they don't usually do reboots.

Eugene Levy does look the part as the Mole Man

Interesting how certain people hold certain heroes (DC vs. Marvel) to different standards while talking reboot (you know who you are). These movies were total and utter cr@p! They weren't "fun" or "funny." They do not deserve a reboot! They made Galacticus a cloud for Pete's sake! A darker F4?! Try "just 4 men!"

FilmGuy91 - 9/14/2009, 8:46 PM
Whatever they do, they need to do a better job with Dr.Doom. He had no justice done to his character. Probably the greatest villain in both Marvel and DC combined.
KillerOfSaints - 9/14/2009, 9:20 PM
The only character I did like from the FF movies was Evans, so it's good to hear that he may be interested in coming back. Thing and Mr. Fantastic were casted fine, I just didn't like those actors and they didn't do anything for me. Doom and Invisible Woman were gawd awful choices. I know the comics were good, but i'm not sold this series needs a reboot. Let it be

i would have no issues with Chiklis and Evans as Thing and Torch again. they had great chemistry onscreen, just like the book.
gtrman - 9/15/2009, 1:57 AM
I enjoyed Evans as Johnny Storm -- perfect casting. The chemistry with Chiklis was also great, even if Chiklis was a bit short.

There was very little chemistry between Alba and Griffud, though. They just didn't feel right, and you couldn't see any good reason for them to be attracted to each other, other than the fact that Alba is smokin' hot.

Julian McMahon as Doc Doom was more smarmy than threatening.

The biggest problem with the FF films was the plot and pacing. I could have lived with the cast if the films had a better plot. I found them mildly entertaining, but disappointing compared with what they could have been. (But not even close to the crapola of Catwoman or Electra!)

On the Cloud Galactus: Yeah, it was disappointing, but can you imagine how stupid a giant guy in purple and blue armor bigger than a planet would have looked? There are some things that work in the comics, but just won't work with a film intended to appeal to a wider audience. I could have lived with Cloud Galactus, and thought Silver Surfer was actually pretty good . . . if the plot had been better.
Local Man - 9/15/2009, 9:10 AM
ROR @ ALBA's good eye candy lol! ; D
LEEE777 - 9/15/2009, 9:35 AM
You know... now that you mention it, I have no beef with Chiklis' performance. It was fine. It's obvious that he understood the character, and so did the writer.

This might sound a little anal retentive but I was bothered about two issues with The Thing.

First off they left out a lot of classic Thing sayings and one liners. That's something Grim is well known for is that they always give him all these great one liners. The guy is like a walking MASH episode. But that's not Chiklis' fault of course. It's the writers' fault on that.
Secondly Chiklis is too short. Much of the time it wasn't a problem. Like most people i didn't even really notice it until the second movie during that HORRIBLE bachelor party scene.
That scene was EVERY BIT as stupid and embarrassing as the much hated Spider Man 3 dancing, and in that scene it was ridiculous how much taller Human Torch was than Thing. He towered over him. That was so wrong.
Still... Chiklis was a good Thing, except for those two possibly minor details.
DarthMulder - 9/15/2009, 9:43 AM
DAMN YOU FOX! I liked the FF movies, and I'm not quick to suggest reboots. Except for Nolan's batman movies, that NEEDED to be done.
