UPDATED! Movie Wars: Thor vs. Spider-Man 4

Marvel movie competition: Spider-Man's release date pits it against the Thor movie!
There has been much talk this week about the return of Spider-Man to the cineplex. First, it was announced that Spider-Man 4 had an official release date of May 6, 2011, the date formerly listed as the release date of The First Avenger: Captain America, and then it was announced that Kirsten Dunst would be reprising the role of Mary Jane Watson in the film.

However, what everyone seemed to overlook is the release date of another Marvel superhero movie: Thor is slated to open May 20, 2011. This means that two Marvel characters will be in direct competition with one another for early summer blockbuster bucks, which is not a good thing for comic book movie fans.

redskullrevenge - 9/17/2009, 3:07 AM
Sounds like a good month for me...I'll be seeing Thor first.
RaKita - 9/17/2009, 3:08 AM
Well as soon as both projects are near completion, one will be delayed or moved forwards. Happens all the time.
Robsaggs - 9/17/2009, 3:28 AM
"Sounds like a good month for me"

Add Batman and Green Lantern, and it will be a great summer.

Anyway, even though Spidey is a more recognized character and more anticipated franchise, I think the fact that it comes out first is gonna hurt it.People will go see it the first two weekends, but when Thor comes, people will want to see it.Thor will take some of Spidey's box office, but in no way will it be any competition.I think Spider-Man will be second only to Batman in box office.

kenny38606 - 9/17/2009, 3:28 AM
This sounds like good news to me. Two Marvel movies in one month.
SlaughterHouse - 9/17/2009, 3:31 AM
I think they'll probably move it - they'd be foolish not to in all honesty! Still, whenever these movies come out, it'll be a great year! Especially if The First Avenger is coming out in 2011 as well! :)
joshw24 - 9/17/2009, 3:33 AM
Brent @ THOR all the way!! ; )

I agree with JOSH!
LEEE777 - 9/17/2009, 3:49 AM
They'll fix this.
Bamf7 - 9/17/2009, 4:09 AM
Still comic book fans will watch 'em both anyway.
LEEE777 - 9/17/2009, 4:14 AM
I can't wait till Thor. I hope it comes out strong like Iron Man did.
DeathWalker - 9/17/2009, 4:31 AM
Thor!
NightAvenger4 - 9/17/2009, 4:51 AM
We all have seen Spider-Man. I can't make a judgement till I see some Thor trailers and teasers. I'm a huge Thor fan. For Odin, for Asgard, for SirPrize.
SirPrize - 9/17/2009, 4:58 AM
Ha, I think most comic book fans would love this, and see both on the same day, one at 6 and one at nine, or one at nine and one at eleven(dont know what cinema times you got in the states, but that what we got here)

-But, yes- we dont get that much superhero funtime, so to spread it over two weeks would make sense- but if they are out the same week I see them both!

JUst hope they come on the Us premiere here in Norway- the big movies do, some you have to wait 2-6 months for..
Johnny K - 9/17/2009, 5:00 AM
i Guess it's Fu-ck Spidey!!!

Dont Make Me Choose Plzzzz!!!!
Kes - 9/17/2009, 5:06 AM
Thor is gonna take it. After that horrible display of a film, Spiderman 3, its gonna be hard pressed for the 4th Spiderman film to make any money. Thor is the new god on the block!
Jimdlux - 9/17/2009, 5:15 AM
ohhhhh/.......but 2 weekends is good enough time for spidey to rake in tons as well as thor to do well and have a good start!!! here is some info of the first Spiderman's third weekend and Star War's first as proof that they both can succeed: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2002&wknd=20&p=.htm
Kes - 9/17/2009, 5:18 AM
I say if they delayed Thor one more week they would be fine two to be really safe. It's a little sketchy where it is not a complete disaster, but not a good thing either.

Johnny K yea comic fans will love it and would go see both on the same day if they could however we are not the majority of the ticket buying audience and those people wouldn't go on the same day to both movies and would have to think long and hard about going to both at all.
stupify_me - 9/17/2009, 5:18 AM
Even though the majority of people disliked Spider-Man 3, it still made nearly $900 million.I don't think the franchise has anything to worry about. As cool as I think Thor is gonna be, I honestly think it will make about half as much.
kenny38606 - 9/17/2009, 5:23 AM
I vote for my favorite superhero all time: SPIDER-MAN!!!; for the following reasons:

1. I want to hear Kirsten Dunst say more sexy "Tiger" lines in Spider-Man 4 and more sexy Spider-Man movies.

2. I love the scenes, especially kissing scenes, that Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire share in the super sexy Spider-Man movies. They are just beautiful.

3. Kirsten Dunst is my personal Mary Jane "M.J." Watson; inside and outside; and I love her very much.

4. Tobey Maguire is my personal Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Tiger; inside and outside; and I love him and his children, Ruby (CHEEKS) and Otis (CHEEKUMS) very much.

5. I hope that Kirsten Dunst will lend me the beautiful wedding dress that she wore in the 2004 blockbuster, "Spider-Man 2", as well as being my Maid of Honor (if or when I marry Tobey Maguire and be the stepmother of his adorable children).

6. I hope I am still alive, healthy, and well after I get the lipoma from my back removed so that I can see more super sexy Spider-Man movies, get an awesome full-time job, and hopefully marry Tobey Maguire.

7. I make the best pancakes and Strawberry-Banana protein shakes in the world.
Louise Smith - 9/17/2009, 5:23 AM
I'm thinking Spidey earns more in the box office that will be no surprise, he is already established, and whatever 3 did he still has a big fanbase. Thor I'm predicting will bring in around Incredible Hulk numbers. IMHO ÜÜÜ
access - 9/17/2009, 5:30 AM
remember that this is Thor's first time and doesnt have a huge fan base and isnt as well known as Spidey....anywhere from from 70-90 mill opening weekend is a great success!!! and i'm certain Thor can achieve this!!! if not i will go to see Thor 90million times to make it happen!!!
Kes - 9/17/2009, 5:31 AM
THOR BABYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!! Yeah!! I'll probably see that bad boy 5 or 6 times!

It will be SO epic!

As for Spider - Man.. maybe I will watch it. Maybe not.

If I log onto here and see that you guys say it's good then I will watch it. Otherwise I might just skip it.
DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 5:36 AM
Bruce campbell will rule in spidey 4! Hopefully!
wards - 9/17/2009, 5:36 AM
Does anyone else think Thor will make money simply because it's connected to Iron Man and is leading to the Avengers? He's a lesser known character, but he's part of a larger story. We don't really know what the story will be, but we do know that it will be related to Iron Man's.
kenny38606 - 9/17/2009, 5:37 AM
And now for a break! ; D

WAZZZZZZZZZUPPPPP!!
LEEE777 - 9/17/2009, 5:38 AM
i think Thor would bring in better numbers than The Incredible Hulk for the mere fact it had to fend off MAJOR Bad rep for Ang "Broke-Back" Lee's version!!!b4 Hulk came out comic noobs kept saying "Hulk 2? but Hulk 1 wasnt good!!!" and i had to keep explaining it was a reboot and not really a sequel...the stubborn ones(which is most of them) waited till dvd or watched it pirated and regretted not going to the movies to see it!!!with good word of mouth and reviews Thor will not have that to deal with!!! now Spiderman4 will have to battle negative rep from Spiderman3...but with the Huge fan base and massive kid&family appeal....Spiderman4 will barely feel the impact of what Spiderman 3 did!!!
Kes - 9/17/2009, 5:41 AM
dingdingding Kes wins the kewpie doll!

That's riiiight. Thor has the advantage of being fresh territory. Your exactly right
DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 5:44 AM
I'm not even going to go see Spider-Man 4 after the travesty that was the third film. I'd rather go see Thor, which will hopefully be a much more faithful adaptation of the character and universe.
skerringer - 9/17/2009, 6:02 AM
as of rite now i dont want to see Spiderman 4 after that crap as well.....but i'm positive when 2011 reaches and i get surrounded by all the Hype(and there will be Hype...cuz Sony and some friends will ensure that at least)....i'm positive i will change my mind and see it opening weekend for sure!!!but nothing will change with Thor...Opening weekend guarenteed!!!
Kes - 9/17/2009, 6:09 AM
I'll see both. They are weeks away from each other, I'm sure they'll make there money redardless. If they are any good they'll be in theatres for awhile.
SuperPoweredMikeL - 9/17/2009, 6:14 AM
i am psyched for both. i liked SM3 despite it's mistakes and i love thor...
Denn1s - 9/17/2009, 6:20 AM
As of now am just waitin for Thor's trailer with the inevitable Kiss's God of Thunder track in the background like view did with Black Sabbath's Iron Man in Iron Man
darkclaw89 - 9/17/2009, 6:49 AM
I don't see the big deal with this. Didn't Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk come out about a month apart?
BmanHall - 9/17/2009, 6:56 AM
They are 2 weeks apart. THey will have no bearing on each other.
TheGuillotine - 9/17/2009, 7:02 AM
Guys, it's about money, and if either film kills off box office for the other, it bodes poorly for all the other incredible comic book movies we are all slavering to see.

You have to look no further than Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk's disastrous juxtaposition far too close together to see that you do not want comic book movies to compete with each other, even if they are released by different studios. Hulk would have done SO much better at the box office had its release been delayed a month, or even two months later than Iron Man. But as a result, many movie-goers who are NOT comic book fans like all of us just weren't ready to go back to the theaters that quickly to see what they considered a re-hash of superheroes.

I know that the studio moguls are going to rethink the release dates, because this is simply untenable. What is going to get even more difficult is when the DC movie slates start ramping up. Don't forget that we have Green Lantern coming down the pike as well as Batman III, and that will even more crowd out opportunities for a non-coimic book geekish market to be exposed to the characters we all know and love, or know and hate, as the case may be.

I REALLY think it needs to be an Early May, July 4, and Labor Day Weekend spacing between big comic book movies if we want these movies to make back enough money to justify the studios signing up to create the follow-on films.

Patience, True Believers! 'Nuff Said!

And dammit, WHERE IS MY SOLOMON KANE???????
bropous - 9/17/2009, 7:11 AM
And an honest question, guys:

If they had dropped the STUPID jazz bar scene, the STUPID Peter Parker/Tony Montero montage, and had instead focused on turning Spidey much more dark with the introduction of Venom and the Black Suit, would Spiderman III have worked for you?

Or was the Sandman angle with his own backstory thrown in too much?

I think that Sony REALLY needs to realize that Spidey is gonna have to narrow down to ONE villain, and it can't be the Saving Mary Jane Watson angle again or the movie will tank. Many parts of Spidey III worked great for me (aside from the junk I mentioned above) but I would dearly love to see a Spidey movie of the quality of Spidey II when I go back to the theater to see Your Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman.
bropous - 9/17/2009, 7:17 AM
Yeah, I don't think 2 weeks apart is really being in competition. Anyone thats going to be waiting and anticipating Spidey will have seen it..probably twice before Thor comes out.

Also, people are over looking the fact that THor could possibly suck more nuts than any other CBM in history. He is a very difficult character to get right, and while i have faith in Brannagh, nothing is for certain until we see some footage.
Rorschach01 - 9/17/2009, 7:19 AM
Very true Rorschach01, very true.
airbeyonder18 - 9/17/2009, 7:38 AM
Both will be fine :)
teabag - 9/17/2009, 7:42 AM
Ror - "people are over looking the fact that THor could possibly suck", same was said about the Watchmen and Iron Man and Robert Downey Jr. for IM. Look how successful all three turned out. Let's hope they don't choke.
SirPrize - 9/17/2009, 7:42 AM
Rorschach01, good point.
I'm not overlooking that. It's possible that any movie could turn out bad.
But at this point I can't see any reason to do anything other than think positively. Like you said, when we get pictures, video, plot points etc we will know if it's gonna suck or not.
I am one of those that takes it hard when things go sour. I get really really let down when these movies phail so I certainly don't want to be negative ahead of time lol Does that make any sense my man?

@Bropus: To answer your question: no. They still would have jacked Venom and Green Goblin 2 up six ways till Sunday. And even if they had made Spider Man 3 darker, the numerous problems with it would still be there

DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 7:42 AM
All true too of course. Any movie could potentially suck. But as far as Iron Man goes, when i heard RDJ was going to be Stark it actually raised my hopes. I thought that was perfect casting. Watchmen, well yeah there was nervousness there, but as soon as I saw some footage I was happy. Thats what Im waiting on with Thor. But with Thor the only thing we know for certain is that its in a great directors hands. Now obviously thats the most important thing, but we still have 2 untested actors in the lead, who will probably turn out to be amazing but we just dont know.
Rorschach01 - 9/17/2009, 7:50 AM
Multi billion dollar buy out and they can't space a movie release? I have waited years for a Thor movie, this movie needs to have an epic feel to it. This cannot be some hour and a half joyride, running time should be at least two hours. Thor needs to appeal to some of the Lord of the Rings crowd and be violent, romantic, and majestic all wrapped up in one. This has to be the most serious Marvel movie made, and still be presented as a comic movie. Thor is one character Marvel can't afford to screw up in a film, especially with Avengers to follow.
ASSASSIN666 - 9/17/2009, 8:00 AM
Agreed, Assasin. Definitely
DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 8:07 AM
If Thor sucks I suppose I'll just wait for the Wonderman movie and hope for the best.

Seriously: when the hell are we going to get news on this movie? We're getting more news on Spiderman 4 now than Thor?
Simonsonrules - 9/17/2009, 8:13 AM
I'll be seeing Thor.
ViperXX79 - 9/17/2009, 8:29 AM
It seems to me, there's plenty of room for all the Marvel movies but I'd rather see Thor which is being done by Marvel themselves, if I had to choose. But I will go see them both! Just because Spidey 3 was a little hinky doesn't mean 4 will be! I'm really looking foward to The Avengers tho'! It's all leading me there!
DDD - 9/17/2009, 8:34 AM
If you're a real CBM fan, you'll see both movies! We need to support all of these movies, people, or some day you may find the cineplex devoid of comic book movies the way Westerns bit the dust!
Brent Sprecher - 9/17/2009, 8:35 AM
Hush yo mouth and heaven forbid Brent! Let's all make sure that don't happen! CBM Solidarity! Yeah!
DDD - 9/17/2009, 8:39 AM
@ Simonsrules
pre production hell.
Hell for us that is. It could be January or February before we hear anything important.

Whats more is that I doubt Branaugh knows how to play this game like John Favreau does. Favreau makes it a point to keep us all in the loop with pictures, tweets, interviews, spoilers etc to keep the internet crowd incensed about it. It works famously.

Kenneth Branaugh probably takes a more traditional view of the situation and keeps things under wraps as much as possible until closer to game time.

Guys can you imagine how momentous that very first picture of Hemsworth as Thor will be? The sheer impact of that will be an enormous force.
The comic book loving world will be stunned into a reverent moment of silence if it looks good. That's a lot of pressure. It's a lot of pressure for the fimmakers and a lot of pressure for us. It's a veritable powder keg lol
DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 8:44 AM
Oh, man, I want Thor to be good soooooooo badly! He's always been my favorite comic book character!
Bijous - 9/17/2009, 8:48 AM
It will be chilling to see Hemsworth in that outfit for the first time, just like it was when RDJ first put on the red and gold armor!
DDD - 9/17/2009, 8:48 AM
Up the irons and swing thy hammer, for Odin, for Asgard!
ASSASSIN666 - 9/17/2009, 8:51 AM
I'm sorry but Spidey 1 cool, 2 not so cool & 3 is like why did I buy the DVD.You know I want to see Peter Paker dance....& Dunst again...Come on.... NO CONTEST...THOR all the way!!!
Yes, it will be hard to pull off but, it could be epic.
HeckYeah - 9/17/2009, 8:55 AM
@ Brent: I used to see things that way.
But then the day came when I found myself wasting money on trash like Elektra and Batman and Robin

I am a real fan which is why I won't support any movie that doesn't do a character or a good story justice.
DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 8:56 AM
Iron Man and Hulk came out the same summer too, and it wasn't a big deal. If it were the same weekend I would be worried, but it's weeks apart.
njfuzzy - 9/17/2009, 8:59 AM
@njfuzzy: Yeah, but those two movies were from the same studio and even cross-pollinated each other with the Tony Stark appearance in Hulk. These movies will compete for non-CBM fans' $$$, there's no escaping that fact!
Bijous - 9/17/2009, 9:16 AM
@Darth: Yeah, good point about those movies blowing chunks--you might as well add Catwoman to that list, as well! WHAT were they thinking?!?

STUDIO EXEC 1: Uh, Catwoman really sucks. What should we do?

STUDIO EXEC 2: Are you kidding me? It's Halley Berry,! Who gives a $#%& about the script?!?
Bijous - 9/17/2009, 9:19 AM
Bijous: First of all it's really cool to hear someone say that Thor is their favorite character. That's awesome and rare. Thor ROCKS

And secondly of course your right about Catwoman.
But if I had listed both Elektra and Catwoman, two movies with female leads, someone would have probably popped up and accused me of mysogeny.

DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 9:37 AM
i hope thor im tired of spider-man
Marvel Rules - 9/17/2009, 9:49 AM
it's going to be a tough call, as much as we like to hate on spidey three it still made more than iron man.
thwhtGuardian - 9/17/2009, 9:51 AM
Yeah, but there's "good" and there's "commercial." Just because something is popular doesn't make it good. Consider pop music...
Bijous - 9/17/2009, 9:55 AM
I love Thor. I know the movie is gonna be awesome. As for spiderman 4, that franchise is doing jello shots off of the grim reaper's stomach.
supermarioworldE - 9/17/2009, 10:05 AM
I'm not worried about the movies opening close to one another. It only means I'll have to see two movies that month ;)

As far as Thor goes, it's one of those subjects that will either be absolutely [frick]ing EPIC, or a miserable failure, nothing in between. Because Brannagh is directing it however, and he understands how a period piece should feel, I give it hope. If anyone could pull off Thor, it's Kenneth Brannagh.
gtrman - 9/17/2009, 10:27 AM
Thor, all the way!
Mjolnir - 9/17/2009, 10:41 AM
I am convinced of Branaugh's ability as a director. That's not a concern. But what is a concern is the lack of fandom.

He's walking a tightrope on this thing anyway. He really needs an insiders perspective to make this really work. I truly truly hope Marvel has schooled him, and feige and others step up to bat for authenticity when it's needed.
DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 10:58 AM
this isn't good! spidey will destroy thor in the box office, even though i want to see thor way more. its sad
CorndogBurglar - 9/17/2009, 11:08 AM
Money wise it will. But that's all.
personally I am hoping that Thor will go the way of Iron Man and be a surprise hit.
DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 11:19 AM
UPDATE: Hey, gang, I added a poll to this article, so scroll up and cast your vote!
Brent Sprecher - 9/17/2009, 11:33 AM
Why was there only 1 comic book movie this summer and like 50 in 2011???
Ryguy88 - 9/17/2009, 11:35 AM
@ Brent:

"If you're a real CBM fan, you'll see both movies!"

What?!? How do you punish badly produced CBM's??? You don't give them your money! Then, they realize that the well-produced movies do better and strive to do better themselves. CB movies will always be around now. They've been making a steady stream of CBMs for 10 years now. They're not going away. We should demand excellence instead of throwing money at any piece of trash affiliated with our favorite characters. In time, you will then see CBMs as the example of how movies should be made, not something where b-rated moviemakers retire too.
Phinehas - 9/17/2009, 11:37 AM
I have to side with Spidey,as a personal favorite, though Thor is something new that I also want to see, I want to find out if the Spider-Man 4 will redeem the previous movie.
Stumblin - 9/17/2009, 11:37 AM
Wow i was expecting the poll to be even/slightly towards Spidy 4 but Thor tops by a landslide! I have no hope for spidy 4 but I cant wait for Thor especially if it has more avengers nods. only 2 more years aye?
JaySchluffy - 9/17/2009, 11:54 AM
Brent, AMEN!!! I [frick]ing HATE Superman, but I saw Superman Returns in theaters and bought it on DVD. Why? Because I love CBM's and I want more to get made.

Phinehas, that would work if the studios thought like that. When it fails, instead they blame it on the character saying, "Ha, told you funny book toons couldn't be box office draws."
TheMyth - 9/17/2009, 12:01 PM
and there HAS to be GOD OF THUNDER from the gods KISS in the soundtrack..
Denn1s - 9/17/2009, 12:06 PM
yeah [frick] the whiney movie spidey, i want me some thor.
deathmetalbrian - 9/17/2009, 12:07 PM
Here's the line up for Summer2011 as it stands right now:

May
Spiderman 4 05/06
Thor 05/20

June
Bourne 4
Green Lantern 06/17

July
Transformers 3
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (vol 2) 07/15
Captain America 07/22

nerosday - 9/17/2009, 12:07 PM
tough call.. with the right villains id be much more interested in spiderman.. i was neveri nto thor and im not especially familiar with him other than the basics... but at the same time, i'd rather marvel studios have the success over fox, and his is part os the inevitable AVENGERS... hmm but it guess what puts it over the edge is that i believe thor had the date set first.. therefor.. FU spidey
fotc - 9/17/2009, 12:10 PM
Yeah, except for the examples that scream back at them like Batman, XMen, Iron Man, and Spiderman! All of which broke records of some sort. No. They know that they're money makers. Those that cry foul are the producers and/ or the directors who made flops and modeled their product after the Batman tv show thinking thats how comicbook movies should look!

Still stalking me, eh? And this isn't a Megan Fox article!!!

(gasp)
Phinehas - 9/17/2009, 12:11 PM
While I have faith Thor will be good, it may be better served to push it back to May 27, 2011 or June 3 to give Spidey more room. Cap I think should be moved to July 1, 2011 to take advantage of the long July 4th weekend; I mean come on its Captain A-Freakin'-Merica!
nerosday - 9/17/2009, 12:11 PM
@ Phinheas: Well spoken sir.

@ Ryguy: Part of it is that it's a matter of business sense. However we might feel about all this, the marketing folks aren't going to approve rolling out anything until there are clear signs that it will sell.
..... kind of like this awesome comment thread.

But yeah, not only this year but next year too all we get is Iron Man 2, Priest, and Jonah Hex. That's nice of course but it sure aint no Thor or Avengers.

Then in 2011 there will be FOUR Marvel movies!! And one HUGE DC flick!

Then the year after that will be the KING of all CBM's... AVENGERS!

What a year!! Yeah, I wish they could have done a couple more this year.
DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 12:17 PM
I think with the right media blitz Thor will be fine. I mean come on seeing a movie about a six and a half foot tall thunder god flying around smashing the hell out of dragons and mythical norse creatures with a hammer while shooting lightening bolts out of his ass is going to be hard not to miss if they really give it an epic feel, which I think they are going for.
nerosday - 9/17/2009, 12:18 PM
If Spider-Man 4 has a DULL, LAME, and BORING Spider-Man and Kraven hunting Lizard storyline, then I won't even see Spider-Man 4.

Keep Kraven OUT of a Spider-Man film, but I heard Ramini and Grant Curtis (producer) both have a hard on for Kraven, I don't know why. Kraven is a BORING, LAME, and unmarketable (The studios should take that into account) character

They should bring Gwen Stacey back, somehow bring Venom back, and finally have Lizard in Spider-Man 4

A Thor movie is WAY overdue, he is Marvel's version of Superman. I hope Don Blake is in the movie, with the casting of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, that is a good sign that he will be in it.
SpideyFan1982 - 9/17/2009, 12:32 PM
if i have to choose i am going to see Thor. until casting is done correctly, Raimi is fired and we get a Spider-Man that portrays the comic character, the Spider-Man series will never be a big thing to me. plus THor is way overdue and awesome.
l0rdleg0las - 9/17/2009, 12:42 PM
@bropous
Nice question! To tell the truth, Spider-Man 3 would have been better if they had stuck with the angry Peter that shouted at his landlord. There should have been no Gwen, no Sandman plot, no dancing. The movie should have been the basic plot of Spidey 1 again with Spidey vs Goblin but as Peter would have known Goblin's true identity this time around, he would have been trying to talk Harry round but the Goblin formula would be impairing Harry's judgement & he wouldnt listen. There could have been a theme of substance abuse, of how the Goblin formula was influencing Harry and the symbiote was influencing Peter like drugs and alcohol influence people's behaviour. Peter could of gotten rid of the symbiote and it could have latched on to Eddie. Then the rest of the movie could have had Harry and Venom work together to take down Spidey. Harry would overcome the Goblin formula and redeemed himself, leading to the actual Spidey 3 ending (but this time the symbiote disappearing before Spidey could kill it)
dancingmonkey08 - 9/17/2009, 12:46 PM
Look you got to think about the timeframe. First spidey comes out on the 6th. Two weeks later is thor so by that time marvel has made whatever the big money is on sm4. I don't think the fourth movie will be as big due to the third movie. Honestly the second movie was the best one. Thor though is heading in the avengers direction so you will have the cameos from the other films in this and I believe it will make it's money back. Who knows 2011 is a ways off and things change all the time.
luecypher - 9/17/2009, 1:16 PM
I think that's the wrong poll question to be asking, it's a no brainer we've seen 3 spidey movies already so of course everyone would choose thor if they could only see one. The real debate is over which do you think will make more money, I mean spidey rode off of the success of spidey two so that's why it raked in the dough but will a third fare as well? Who knows.
thwhtGuardian - 9/17/2009, 1:58 PM
If I HAD to chosse, it'd be Spider-Man 4 mainly because I have no idea what Thor is going to be like whereas Spider-Man is almost guaranteed to be great especially if they've learnt their lesson from the third movie and return to the quality of the first two! :)
joshw24 - 9/17/2009, 2:52 PM
Honestly Thor is one of my fave comic characters, but I have no faith in the movie. I don't think Kenneth is all that great and I think the casting choice for Thor is one of the worst casting decisions in the history of comics to film.
stupify_me - 9/17/2009, 3:17 PM
The only reason i picked Thor over Spider-man was because Spider-man has already been done 3 times and Thor looks like it could be something amazing
Watchtower31 - 9/17/2009, 3:29 PM
Well, I for one think Thor will be great and if I have to choose I chose Thor. But I'm going to go see 'em both! I'm not going to miss one movie that leads to Avengers! I'm so happy The Avengers is finally being made I could just doo doo in my dungarees! :D
DDD - 9/17/2009, 4:15 PM
Brent: A couple of points, if I may. First, westerns did not "bite the dust", as you say. Certainly, they are not nearly as common as they once were, they have never completely gone away. Consider this list of westerns that are currently in various stages of development for the big screen: Jonah Hex, Gunsmoke, The Big Valley, The Lone Ranger and True Grit, among others.

My concern regarding this scheduling overlap, and what has bothered me for a while now, is not that comic book movies will become rare, but that they may over-saturate the market to the point that they wear out their welcome. Now, for a lot of contributers here, there is no saturation point. I love seeing these movies, too, but 2011 is beginning to look awfully crowded.
watcher1 - 9/17/2009, 4:33 PM
Thor will be the one. After the terrible Spidermna 3 I wish they forget about the character for a long time.
Verdugo - 9/17/2009, 5:01 PM
We're all gonna go see these movies, I have been a comic book nut for to long not to. Spidey 4 has to be good after the gaffe that was part 3. Thor will do well because this is his first ever film so they can't afford to blow it. Period.
hewilldefytheirgravity - 9/17/2009, 5:01 PM
DDD I don't understand how anyone can think Thor will be good. The casting choice was absolutely horrible. The picked someone who is nothing like thor. It's almost as bad as Thor's voice in MUA2 lol which was terrible.
stupify_me - 9/17/2009, 5:03 PM
I don't think we're anyone to judge casting, I know I haven't since spider man. I remember when Tobey was announced everyone was up in arms but he was near perfect in the role when the movie came out. I'm taking the wait and see approach, personally though I respect Bragnagh and I'm willing to grant the benefit of the doubt with is decisions.
thwhtGuardian - 9/17/2009, 5:16 PM
I wouldn't be worried.

That's a full two weeks worth of difference, so I doubt that there will be that many people who haven't seen SM4 by then to be much of a problem.
MovieTheaterLad - 9/17/2009, 5:25 PM
And, behold! There rose a dark cloud, black as Loki's heart. From betwixt the clouds a spark, then thunder, lightning, hail, all the elements of nature crashed down upon the spider's head...

THOR WILL BE TOPS FOR ME..AND OF COURSE, SPIDEY ISNT GETTING MUCH LOVE, THE 3RD WASNT AS COOL AS WE HOPED IT WOULD BE, SPIDER MAN I AND 2 WERE SUPERB..I PUT IT TO YOU GUYS..WHAT WAS IT THAT YOU DIDNT LIKE ABOUT SPIDERMAN THREE?WHAT TURNED YOU OFF..HARRY DYING?,,EVIL PETER?..SANDMAN?..WAS IT TOPHER PLAYING VENOM?..
GUNSMITH - 9/17/2009, 6:49 PM
I must say... This poll has really put a smile on my face.

It's so incredibly cool that there are this many people THIS pumped about Thor.
DarthMulder - 9/17/2009, 7:16 PM
I'll probably see both but if I can only see one in those two weeks I'll see Thor it's the first film Spider-Man is a sequel
JHowlett - 9/17/2009, 7:24 PM
i think they did that for a reason
to promote thor and the cap threw spidy
spiderman will pack out the the theaters and before the movie all the previews will be marvel movies they can use spidy to make kids and other people even aware of thor......by 2011 there should be trailers for thor, cap a, first class, and prob wolvie 2
jimthefan - 9/17/2009, 7:33 PM
Well I've no idea how you could make Thor work in a live action movie.
Acerimmer1 - 9/17/2009, 8:14 PM
I enjoy all three spidey movies. Two is probably best.
shibbmeister - 9/17/2009, 9:04 PM
i would see them both
AvengingAngel1022 - 9/17/2009, 9:05 PM
I want to see Thor, because I don't know what to expect. There are several ways it could be handled. I'm dying to see the first trailer next summer.

Some of my excitement has waned for Spidey, its not stale to me yet, but ten years in its getting there. It needs some fresh blood. I'll still see it, but I'm more enthusiastic for Thor.

nerosday - 9/17/2009, 10:00 PM
thwhtknight we have just as much right to say if it's a good casting choice as anyone else. The point is that Thor looks a certain way and instead of trying to get even similar to that look they went the the exact opposite way. They picked a guy with an average build an average height. The God of Thunder that's what he is the god of friggen thunder a behemoth of a man and he is being played by a guy who isn't even remotely close to big. There are talented actors that were being considered that were larger instead we got this.
stupify_me - 9/17/2009, 11:14 PM
i agree with most that this wont be a problem one of the movies will get pushed back or forward just a bit. no big deal at all. but, if i could ONLY see one, it would definetley be thor.
bw - 9/18/2009, 12:11 AM
THOR ALL THE WAY! SM3 KILLED IT. ONCE AGAIN, RE-BOOT ON SPIDER-MAN PLEASE.NOT ANOTHER INTRO JUST A RE-BOOT OF CAST AND STORY. THOR WILL CRUSH SM4 IF THEY OPEN THE SAME TIME.
CrashTest - 9/18/2009, 12:25 AM
Are any of you saying that you won't have the cash to see both?
FateSucks - 9/18/2009, 2:15 AM
THOR ALL THE WAY!!!!!! THOR CAN STICK MJOLINIR UP SPIDEYS ARSE!!!
Trioch - 9/18/2009, 3:37 AM
Thor is an epic character. SM is not. I can see a lot of the Lord of the Rings fans loving Thor.
SirPrize - 9/18/2009, 4:57 AM
2weeks is enough............
May weekend1 SPM4 $100mill+
May weekend2 SPM4 $50mill+
May weekend3 Thor $90mill+
SPM4 $30mill+
May weekend4 Thor $45mill+
SPM4 $20mill+

i know Thor isnt established yet but so was Ironman b4 he came out...and that made $98million in it's first weekend.

Side note: If Wolverine Origins(although he was established) could make $85mill in it's first weekend dispite bad reviews/word of mouth and a leaked verion....y cant a "good" Thor movie make as much?
Kes - 9/18/2009, 5:25 AM
@sirprize ur absolutely right!!! and they havent had a LOTR kind of orgasm since Return of the King released on Blue Ray!!!if done right ....Thor can capture alot of their FanBase!!!
Kes - 9/18/2009, 5:29 AM
i find it funny that everyone complains about reboots, but as soon as one of their favorite franchises puts out ONE bad movie, all of a sudden people want it rebooted. come on, spidey had one bad movie. the next one is being made by all the same people and actors. they've already proven to be capable of making good spidey movies, hell, one is considered one of the best CBM's by many people. i think they deserve another chance. but i'll be seeing thor first!
CorndogBurglar - 9/18/2009, 5:33 AM
@ Kes: Hell yes it could. Even if it's bad it will probably rake in that much just from curious comic book fans.

DarthMulder - 9/18/2009, 8:53 AM
def thor. tired of spidey.
JerzeyHellboy - 9/18/2009, 11:06 AM
I know we have a right to judge, I'm just saying we should wait and see what the guy looks like in the costume. Like I said the same arguments were given for spiderman and tobey was great.
thwhtGuardian - 9/18/2009, 12:43 PM
Reboots are for sissies
Rorschach01 - 9/18/2009, 1:58 PM
Competition is healthy. And, well economically Brent really is right, because any profits that these movies make (even Elektra and Catwoman, etc.) depending on the company of course, go into the same bank accounts and extended credit lines they use to make the good movies. Of course if it's a huge gross it propagates a sequel. I mean the economics behind the whole thing is not that complex, but if you love a character, or even the companies and the genre as a whole, it's a good idea to financially support it. Can be a gamble, but gambles can pay dividends too.

Anyway, Spidey is arguably the most famous and iconic comic book super hero there is, and is such a well established movie franchise so (even though 3 sucked comparatively) its numbers will probly end up pretty high, regardless - much broader and more established fanbase.

I don't see Thor going bad with things in Brannagh's hands, plus you know he is aspiring to reach the heights and quality that TDK and Iron Man did. You know Raimi is too.

These projects are so far away that they could easily end up being pushed even a year or so back - hopefully they won't, but if it makes for better craftsmanship, I have no problem with it at all.

For the aforementioned reasons I will see both, but I will see the one I like better twice.

Look, the way I look at it is - I'm getting to pay $5 to $11 to see a product that cost $200 to $300 million to make, so even if the movie isn't all that great, it's not exactly a ripoff. And even if the movie is grunt, I can usually take something away from it, even if it's just a new idea to constructively criticize. Like in Spiderman 3 just the birth of Sandman was worth admission alone.

But that's just me.
48and2 - 9/18/2009, 9:30 PM
@Acerimmer1 You said "Well I've no idea how you could make Thor work in a live action movie."

Case in point, look at Spiderman. When they originally announced plans for the first movie, people said that exact same thing. "Spiderman movie? Live action? How the hell do they plan on doing that?" And look how it turned out. You just gotta have faith.

As far as Branagh directing Thor, he's gonna do a fantastic job. He's already got the experience under his belt at directing a period piece. He's done it multiple times. Thor's going to be another period piece for him, just a different kind of period piece. Once again, just gotta have faith. Wait for those first couple photos and whatnot to come out. We'll all be amazed (I hope...)

The spider scurried into the shadows, terrified by the blue-white light of Thor's godly wrath...

thor is so laaame... spiderman is way better
cris94g - 9/20/2009, 2:50 PM
The sad part in all of this is that Spidey 4 will make enough money to ensure the morons who make it continue to destroy the franchise!!! 3 was the worst piece of garbage I have ever seen!! How can you cast Topher as Eddie Brock if you have ever read the books, I mean Jesus you don't even have to read the books just look at the damn pictures. My 4 year old can do that!!! We're getting dangerously close to the Batman franchise in terms of selling out the franchise for quick cash here!!! Now I haven't read that much about it but I feel confident in my assumptions given the track record!! If Carnage is introduced, that movie cannot be a family friendly flick. I would love to see Spidey chasing Carnage around the country while he's doping his things but it will never happen they will turn Carnage into a wimp and create another crappy flick!!!
cujo92129 - 9/30/2009, 9:37 AM
2011's supposed to be a big year in film!:

thor
spider man 4
cap america
green lantern
deadpool
Magneto (supposevely)
ghost rider 2
harry potter 7 (part2)

idthink they can fit all those in one year. theyll prolly hold off on cap, magneto, + deadpool until th next year (hope not)
torched4 - 10/2/2009, 3:42 PM
It depends on the storyline that Spider-Man 4 has, if they have a BORING Kraven and Spidey hunting the Lizard for 2 hours, then Thor will DESTROY Spider-Man 4 in the box office and the Spider-Man franchise will be dead.
