Alien Prequel to Be Shot in 3-D

Director Ridley Scott to amp up the fright factor of one of sci-fi's all-time scariest creatures by shooting them in stereoscopic 3-D!

Roger Christian, art-director on Star Wars and Alien recently told ShadowLocked that famed director Ridley Scott's return to the Alien franchise will utilize Hollywood's favorite new technique:

"Ridley's doing the next Alien in 3-D."

Christian said that bringing Scott back to the franchise he helped launch is exactly what is needed to kick-start the seemingly dead concept:

"Ridley told me some of his ideas when we were here in Toronto. He has a very clear understanding of where this should go. They kind of stopped dead one of the greatest horror franchises there's ever been, and it had legs to go on. So I'm hoping he'll revive another three. The world certainly wants it, and the fans want it - everybody."

Christian, who is a friend of Scott's, said that he hopes to be invited to help out on the prequel:

"I actually met Ridley ... we had a chat to catch up, and he was going on about how much I'd 'got it' on the first one. I guess that's because of Star Wars, where I had a trained crew with me...and we learnt how to do it. It's not a technique that's easy to do - it's something I'd learnt. So [Scott] kept saying how I was the one responsible, really.

"I always made only one promise to myself. I said if ever I went back to designing, the only film I would ever want to design is Alien, if Ridley re-did it. I could never understand why they didn't pull him back in."

I loved Aliens, but I actually take Ghostnappa's point about it being inferior to the first one. Ridley Scott's film is a masterpiece..Cameron's is a great action movie.

there are people in this world that don't like Aliens?? what?? that movie was awesome! sure it wasn't a horror movie, it was more action, but give me a break. aside from the first one, it was the only other one that was original with a different plot! how many times do people want to see an alien get loose and wreak havoc on an unarmed crew?? it was different, which is welcome...and its classic. and how can you not like the Colonial Marines??? i don't get it. that movie is fantastic.

@ ghost nappa

were you watching the same movie?? it doesn't take an hour and a half to see an alien. (the movie itself is only 2 hours.) and that build up made it that much creepier when the aliens finally started coming out of the walls and snatching up marines, lol.

and the time it does take in the beginning is spent building plot and character relationships. if they didn't take that time, then no one would have cared about any of the marines that get waxed. it introduced The Company, which is a heavy part of the Alien mythos. we got to see the Colonial Marines. and its still the only one where we got to see an alien hive, as well as an explanation of what they are and how they operate.

not to sound offensive, but i think maybe you didn't realize how important that movie is to the overall Alien mythos??

How the hell did i not know about this being made...cant wait.

With all these 3-d movies coming out..i hope someone start to make 3-d glasses you can buy. Maybe something frameless.

I hope that this turns out to be decent but the whole 3D thing is getting a little boring, lol! When it's done well then that's fine but it seems like they're just tacking it onto every single movie since bloody Avatar! :P

Guys, check out my new ASTONISHING X-MEN Fan Cast!!! Just click the link!

If Ridley's doing it anything like the original Alien, why would it need to be in 3D? Just seems a bit unnecesary. Still, a prequel sounds interesting, regardless of the technology.

seeing that little alien head coming out of the aliens mouth right at your face is worthy of a ride at universal studios. maybe they can spray some water in your face at the same time. ridiculous

This doesn't need to be in 3D... I think it works for things like Avatar and Alice in Wonderland because the "environments" are as big a part of the story as the characters, and it adds something. But the goal should never be "Lets make it in 3D" its should be "lets make an a quality film". I don't think this being 3D will add to the story.

We'll See, they really need to explore these Franshise more though... I'm tired of the whole good guy vs bad guy scare fests.

I'm also so tired of the stories being linear; they’re all made in a chronological order of some sort. Why can’t it be taking place at the same time as the other movies? Just in a different location with different characters.

"I don't think this being 3D will add to the story."

in all fairness, 3D never adds ANYTHING to the story. i don't care what movie it is. i just don't get all the complaining. (not you specifically) if you don't want to watch it in 3D, then don't. its that simple, y'know?

This isn't really news other than the 3D part, but even that isn't news since every movie in the next year or two is doing 3D... *sigh* damn gimmicks. What's next? You get a toy with your ticket that talks?

I'll agree with most, in that parts 3 and 4 seemed to be nothing more than the studios trying to grasp at more money, rather than to grasp at a good extension of an already great story.

I'll also agree that part one was a classic...one of my favorites of all time, and a sterling example of the genre.

Part two, however, was also an outstanding film, though coming just short of the status of 'classic'...in my opinion. I agree with CDB on the point of "How can you not like the Colonial Marines?". Other than Ripley, they tended to be some of the most memorable characters of the series, and gave us such great quotes as:

"Marines!! We are LEAVING!!"

"I say we grease this rat-f@&k sonnovabitch right now."

"That's it, man! Game over, man!! GAME OVER!!"

That, and of course, one of the most memorable lines from the series for me also came from this iteration, although not from a Marine:

"Get away from her, you BITCH!!"

Granted, the vein changed quite drastically from parts one to two, but just because they are different in flavor, doesn't mean that the second was garbage...does it?

@ misterjoshua

lol, not at all, good sir. not at all. its a movie series about an alien species. they HAD to show the hive at some point, and this was the best possible way to do it. its the only movie we get actually SEE what would happen if the aliens were allowed to run amok in a city. and sending marines to fix things, was just awesome.

I liked the 3rd one. Fincher had some good shit there I think. And Charles S. Dutton owned it.

GhostNappa

You're a fister, and you're probably 16, so you're opinion of Aliens isn't one I'm really concerned with. You just saw Aliens a few weeks ago? When did you see Ridley Scott's? The week before that? Predator and Terminator were never really horror films anyway. They are every bit the Sci Fi/Action movies that Cameron's Aliens is. Your assessment of the pace and screen time for the queen are equally off base. I loved the original too, but to praise that movie and complain about the pacing of Aliens kills your credibility.

TheNameIsBetty - 3/5/2010, 10:41 AM
They should build everything flat (advertisements, posters, etc) in 3-D, so we can use vonstallin's idea.

lol but then it would get boring.

But seriously I'm excited now. Maybe we can get a Lego Aliens game lol

a cargo ship carrying animals picks up some alien eggs and the face hugers get on the animals and different aliens tear nthrew the ship, add in some more story and plot, and cast and their is a new take on the franchise and a great story.
