Terminator Takes Box Office Beat Down from Ben Stiller

A comedy beats "Terminator" for weekend winnings at the box office. The Christian Bale movie raked in $43 million from over four days, but "Night at the Museum 2" took in $54 million in only three...
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ben Stiller beat Christian Bale in the North American weekend box office duel between their respective "Night at the Museum" and "Terminator" sequels, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.

The 20th Century Fox comedy "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" sold $53.5 million worth of tickets during the three days beginning Friday, far exceeding the $30.4 million debut of its 2006 predecessor.

"Terminator Salvation" earned $43.0 million. The film fell short of the $44 million start for the previous entry in the cyborg series, 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," the swan song of franchise star Arnold Schwarzenegger.

But the race between the two new sequels was closer than it appeared because Warner Bros. got a head start on the U.S. Memorial Day holiday weekend by opening "Terminator" on Thursday, when it earned about $13.4 million. That takes the film's four-day total to $56.4 million.

The studios generally try to avoid each other when they roll out their big movies. In this case, "Night at the Museum" played to a broad audience, while "Terminator" was more targeted at male moviegoers.

Time Warner Inc-owned Warner Bros. said "Terminator" was likely more affected by competition for older men from the National Basketball Association playoffs, which hurt business in cities like Los Angeles.

Fox, a unit of News Corp, said the "Night at the Museum" opening set a new live-action record for Stiller. The film also opened in most international markets, earning $50.5 million.

Last weekend' North American champion, "Angels & Demons," slipped to No. 3 with $21.4 million, taking the 10-day total for Columbia Pictures' Tom Hanks religious thriller to $81.5 million. By contrast, its 2006 predecessor "The Da Vinci Code" had earned $136.5 million after the same period.

But the Sony Corp unit has said it never expected the second film to be as big, and noted it that it was the top choice internationally with sales of $60.4 million. Its foreign total now stands at $198.3 million.

But Angels and Demons beat both of them, it brought in $69 million in the United States and $159 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

@ Betty

No. I dont find a problem with Star Trek...that movie, pretty much explains everything you needed to know. OH, and its a REQUEL...something T4 wasnt. Though it was a time trval based, their were also two worlds I believe, and black holes involved in the storyline, completely different...not going into that shit. But the reboot, acknowledges the past films, but the story itself changed the origins of the characters because of the time travel thing which is why it didnt bother me. Because its a FRESH START. Also I'm a bit biase towards movies that build character development and great scripts [yes, biase...because most people dont care about script or that stuff...all they want is ACTION and CGI]...T4 great example.

Btw, I was never a Star Trek fan. So, I never knew the origins, thus, cant complain about the movie. But, The talk Kirk has with elder spock and the STORY DEVELOPMENT to EXPLAIN the concept of TIME TRAVEL and what changes occured in their world compared to the other future world....was perfectly done.

If Terminator explained things in depth, and detail, and also had character development. i dont think I would of even wrote a negative review about it.

Going off topic:
Expect a Transformer : ROTF NEGATIVE REVIEW FROM ME lol...if that movie has no character development, shitty script, and michael bay bullshit all over....ill be writing some nasty stuff about that movie as well. but, as for the first Transformers it was a good movie. Didnt have a problem with it, plus its suppose to be based of the TOYLINE first, and Tv show second. Since it came in that order.

Aiiwolf - 5/25/2009, 2:34 AM

What about character development, what character didn't you get? What im asking is can you give me a specific problem about the character development?

@ yohan Kolic

John and Kate's relationship wasnt developed the way they should of shown it, they werent affectionate with each other, and thats primarily to the script didnt give them much screen time to be shown as husband and wife, because if the script was done right, it would of flushed out the characters more. I mean you dont even care about these characters, and yet their suppose to be very important. The main characters were Marcus Wright and Kyle Reese....but what about John? Also, John conner comes off trying to be a leader. KEYWORD: TRYS.....if they had more character devleopment and relationship built between each character rather than focusing on the ones that didnt matter such as Moon bloosgood and sam worthington relationship which by the way was a total waste, if mracus wright was gonna die anyways....maybe they would of focused more on john and kate. The problem is the movie wasnt executed right, its a badass action film, but story-wise its bland.

Hopefully, in T5...if They be focus on building a BOND between, Kate and John Conner, I think it would be better overall, she gives him the courage, the hope for survival because she bares his child,...I mean she is SUPPOSE to be one of the main influence in how he becomes a GREAT LEADER, this movie did poor job showing that their even together. T3 might or might now have been a good movie to some people, I liked it. But, the Kate bruster Arnold talked about, wasnt the same Kate we saw in this movie...she barely had any screen time. These are just a few issues, theres alot more I pointed out.Oh, and that kiss scene dont mean shit, and what the hell is she doing as pregnant woman [frick]ing around with robots? Its goofy thats what it is.
Aiiwolf - 5/25/2009, 1:02 PM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
@Aii
Look maybe you should watch all the movies, because no one movie has all the info, want to see John and Kate have a relation ship, watch T3, want to know about John watch T2 and T3, didn't think that T4 talked enough about Johns family, watch T1. The thing about theses movies is you need to watch he them all to have all of the story.
T1 had Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese's relationship
T2 had Sarah Connor and John Connor's relationship
T3 had John Connor and Kate Brewster's relationship
T4 had Blair Williams and Marcus Wright's relationship
See thats a lot of stuff, and a lot of characters, there not going to be able to tell you the full story of every character in every movie, you learn about someone and you move on to the next story.
So what im saying Aii is that you should already know about John and Kate and shouldn't need to hear it again.
THEY SHOULD HAVE TRINITY/NEO kinda LOVE! YOU FELT IT THEN!
dellamorte1872 - 5/25/2009, 1:31 PM
LOL lmfao....Well see for those that didnt watch T3, or the people that didnt watch the trilogy...and jumped into watching salvation because supposely its a movie of its own. The idea of it being a new beginning of franchise yet a sequel, is my problem with this. I dont think T2 was about Sarah and her sons relationship....It was about John and T-800 more...sarah conner narrating her thoughts and having flashbacks lol.... T3 on the other hand didnt really focus on anything...movie felt like it wasnt even taken serious...this movie had a serious them....but it didnt have the build. No one should have to watch the first 3 in order to know thats kate. Shit, ner name wasnt even mentioned until like the very end lol
Better script thats all I ask for in T5. And this bullshit about "We are all dead...deadddd!!!! and screaming and yelling and re-repeating the same shit" get over that...we the audience are not stupid....we just want a more sophisticated script....at least i do.
Aiiwolf - 5/25/2009, 1:38 PM
NO, no, no, [frick] the people that haven't seen the other movies, if they dont know whats going on by now they really shouldn't be watching the damn movie. Your the type that says lets make the movie different from the comic, we wouldn't want it like the comic because then not everyone will know whats going on, so we have to bastardize it to appease the masses when in reality it sucks for everyone.
If I had to set through the whole back story of John Conner again, this movie might have been shit, turns out they didnt do that, and the movie was good.
If you dont get it after this im down talking to you, I might talk at you, I mean your a nice guy, but are professional relationship is over man..
Damn. I liked the Terminator movie a lot, but as said above it was Memorial Day weekend and all the kids were out of school on vacation with their families, and whats a big family thing to do? Go to the movies. Thats what we always did on Memorial weekend.
Shadowelfz - 5/25/2009, 2:00 PM
@ Yohon Kali... thats not what I meant, and i dont care about threats either, nor would I write the stuff I do, or say half the stuff I did in the past. lol
I didnt want the movie to have a backstory, since it is a sequel it doesnt need [i agreeed with you on that along time ago]
Yeah i have said in the past, that sometimes we should just not follow any comic, and just create our own mythology with characters. But, if you ARE following a comic, than i expect it to be on SPOT, i dont want chnages and bullshit.
The movie overall was entertaining, but it was a good action flick, but not a GREAT WRITTEN ONE. It has its flaws... I like some drama in my action movies, i guess thats what im trying to say.
For example) The Watchmen....Geeez I love that movie. The movie takes patience, alot of people dont have that because were fed this action and thrill stuff, and the uadience doesnt want to listen to an iontelligent script. The movie followed the comic page for page, left maybe two scenes out...but overall the movie was very faithful and amazing. Had drama and eveyrhting.
Terminator has good special effects, great pace, dint keep you bored, but there were some cheesy things about the movie...such as his pregnant wife holding the "robot snake thing"... The bikers that wanted to rape or whatever moon bloodgood..."she even says the meachine are the enemies not each other"...lol....these kinda thinsg are stupid and cheesy....if they are going to do these things...have a better script. dont feed us bullshit. Most movies today are nothing like the movies in the past. For example remakes....Was Halloween remake better than the original? To me No. i'm very picky with my films now, I used not care...but shit 10-15 years of crappy movies....kinda changes a person.
I agree with moving forward, but they have to focus on John's life, they have to push him to be that leader....shit, man...he should of known how to take down some of those t-600 easily....the t-800 i can understand...yeah hes super strong...more advance...never fought before...but certaining things....were just silly. I'm 23 years old, I believ maybe im getting more mature and not easily fasinated by Fx as i used to.
So far to me the movies that will always be great to me based of a comicbook/graphic novel will be:
Batman Begins [loved it more than the dark knight..maybe because its passive, and hopeful]
The Dark Knight [Great film, but depressing everytime you watch it, which makes it what it is]
The Watchmen [very under-rated...and faithful adaptaion]
V for Vendetta [I think the only thing they really
altered and changed was that natalie portman was suppose to be HOOKER, and they changed her character...no biggie, but overall it followed the graphic novel]
Incredible Hulk [Finally, their getting it build character development, let us feel who were watching]
Iron Man [Same thing for iron man, great script by the wyay...no WITTY script....now can they do it again?!]
Terminator 1 and 2 [Good flicks age well so far]
...Those are just a few that I will always love, and cant complain against....i love superman by the way but the only two superman movies i can truly say is worth watching is Superman 1 and Richard donners cut superman 2. Everything else sucked lol...i forced myself to like superman returns...and in the end i was like who you kidding. IT sucked!...because it wasnt original, it was lame, and same as superman 1 and 2....well thats how terminator 4 felt to me, like the rest of them...felt like the war hadnt even started.
I really hope in T5, its back to being rated R, and back to being dark, and scary themed...I'm still waiting for an army of robots, murdering humans with laser guns lol
Man have you ever read a comic? Watchmen the movie only left out two scenes from the comic? The only thing they altered or changed in the movie V for Vendetta was the fact that Evey was a prostitute? You're out of your mind.
alten2345 - 5/25/2009, 8:33 PM
Could we get off of Terminator and talk about what is really important, Angles and Demons. I actually liked it better than Terminator Salvation. I highly recomend it to anyone. It had the highest opening weekend since Indiana Jones and the Kindom of the Crystal Skull. Angles was a complex story remiminsent of Da vinchi Code, but with much better pacing.
The cast was exquisit in all forms. Tom Hanks was much more compelling in this story than DC. Ewan Mcgregor, wow, the force is indeed strong in his perofrmance. He played an amazing character, I really don't want to give the ending away, but Damn. This and Watchmen are, to me, the best films to come out so far this year.
I liked Terminator and Wolverine but this movie raped them like the skinny guy on cellblock C.
You know how the score of a movie can make it truely amazing? Well this movies score was epic, it blened perfectly with each scene, the Gothic sounds of the voices at some points, to the melodies at others.
What I am trying to say is that I really enjoyed this movie and I highly recommend it to anyone else. It is a well placed, well thought out suspensful story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
HAWK out.
THEHAWK - 5/25/2009, 9:32 PM
Oh and by the way it does deviate from the novel a bit, especially seeing that the novel took place before DC and was not a sequel like Howard made it.
MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!!!Just my opinion here and i hope that no one takes it personally.I have watched Angels and Demons and Night at the museum. To me I had already known how Angels was gona turn out because Ewan was to big of a name to not be the bad guy. The movie was just alright for me. The story really had no draw for me like Da vinci did. And night at the museum was just alright for me also. Gervais was there for like 5 minutes and so was Jonah. Stiller was not all that funny. I think it was just ok. And as far as Terminator goes, I still have not been able to force myself to watch it. I know it has good special effects, but the story is what is killing me. So far, Star Trek has been the best I have seen this year. Wolverine was a flop also. So he has 2 bullet holes in his head. I though once adamantium was hard it was virtually unbreakable. Not even The Hulk could break it, just bend it a little. I dont know. Just my thoughts on a few of these movies this year. I think Transformers is gona set the bar again for summer movies. Oh, also, I wonder what is Will gona do this July? He used to own July. But how do you compete with transformers?
Lobo - 5/25/2009, 10:33 PM
great movie, followed the old story line. Didn't have a crazy big man vs. machine all out battle scene. |But, other than that there is nothing really to complain about. i don't see you nerds doing any better.
thesteve13 - 5/25/2009, 10:34 PM
The Hawk... "deviate from the novel a bit" lol... more than a bit, no? You liked A&D better than DC? Really? I cant believe it!!! The assassin alone was enough to hate the movie. He resembled NOTHING like the character in the book. Either in looks or personality. Horrible.He couldnt even scare my bunny slippers away! Vittoria Vetra... brought NOTHING to the movie. She also was like nothing in the book. She was one dimensional. They were the only ones who knew about the project it made for more mystery and suspense. And the founder & CERN... I looked forward to seeing him as well on screen and he wsnt even given a thought! They glossed right over him. I wanted to see that aircraft. None of the characters were true to their counterparts in the book. The only one, like you said, was good is Ewan McGregor. He was OUTSTANDING and even his character wasnt fully developed. After reading the book, you feel like his character couldve really popped but he was held back. It had the potential to be so much BETTER but it failed to deliver. Oliveri... what was that? The 4th Cardinal? I was disappointed. I can understand some liberties but I couldnt relate to the characters. I read most Dan Browns book and IMHO A&D was better than the DC bookwise. But Movie wise... DC did better. In the book there more mystery, more cloak and dager, dangerous, dark... this movie was no where near as good as the book. imo.. I also liked the way it started in the book better than how the movie started.
p.s. if you liked DC you may want to read The Secret Supper by Javier Sierra. Or The Last Cato by Mathilda Asensi.
KeepItReal - 5/25/2009, 11:10 PM
@Real.
I think it was the pacing and the score of this one that did it for me, I really like DC so it was close.
The book was much better, I liked the Angles the book better than the DC book. I miss a lot of the things they changed, but I guess it was done to make things more believable, and to fit in t=with the fact that they made A&D a sequel to DC. McGregor gave what I felt was one of his best performances. I think they toned him down a bit so you wouldn't immediatly assume he was the villain.
I recently re read A&D and it would have been hard to play back on film for a general audience. I think they did the best they could on it. My main prob;em was that there wasn't enough character development, except for Langdon, Vetra and the rest did not really develop much. I liked it in the book when the elector Mortati became the new Pope and the last Cardinal drowned, that was one thing I wish they had left intact.
THEHAWK - 5/26/2009, 12:04 AM
I saw Terminator Salvation this Saturday in the balcony sipping on some drinks. It was a good movie, only thing is that all the trailers and spoilers has spoiled the experience for me. Overall it's still a good movie.
Ror- Sorry, you're missing out on the Terminator Salavation experience. NAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! HAR! HAR!
SirPrize - 5/26/2009, 8:16 AM
Hawk: yeah... i know what you mean. I think the book was way better than the movie... way better. langdon was Langdon so alright, but Vetra she didnt bring anything I think. She was just so bland and blase about it all. They didnt direct her enough because that is not how she was. And the Assassin LOVED to kill. He didnt even need a reason let alone would never have APOLOGISED for the pain inflicted, the bastard. he loved all that crap. The character menancing ways didnt translate well in the movie. I know what you mean in fitting it all into the movie but what they did fit in they werent true to the book. DC movie was more true i think. You said to make it more believable but since when did that stop hollywood before.. lol... I think Ewan McGregor should have been allowed to go all out like in the book. They stunted his character growth. He could have been phenomenal!!! ... It would have made the movie better and really, isnt that what it was all about? his madness realized?
I liked the ending best too in the book.
KeepItReal - 5/26/2009, 9:02 AM
I own so much comics, that i ahve to store them in boxes, or in the damn garage...enough to make me forget stories iver read...probably why I mix alot of things up. Yes, she was a damn prostitute...I remember having to conversation before with a fan of the novel. As for the Watchmen I remember a while back saying they should make a prequel for "Rorscach"...due to alot of the thinsg they didnt add, but as story wise....I know their going to ADD A few scenes in they left out...i bet more than 2 lol....but as for NightHawk getting revenge of his own? Why ddint they add that? THeir not going to add page for page...and identical scene to scene..., if thats what you thought i meant, thats just stupid....but as for following the story close to where they didnt miss a scene...i say maybe 2-3...than again i probably should re-read the watchmen...been a while. But, I dont think im going to go through those damn boxes am i?
Aiiwolf - 5/26/2009, 3:05 PM
I agree with Aiiwolf. Terminator Salvation wasn't that good. The scenes didn't flow at all. I blame it on Bale. Since he came in and made them redo the script. Original script was supposed to be more about Marcus Wright. Which probably would of built his character better.
I dunno but when Marcus first met Kyle and that little girl, them two reminded me of the Fist of the North Star movie. The little girl couldn't speak either in Fist of the North Star and then the kid had goggles like Reese had. Maybe they took it from that.
Night at the Museum was booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring. how did it make so much money?
both movies made 70 million.
grif - 5/26/2009, 5:50 PM
@Aiwolf
Okay let's put what you said on here and point out how wrong you are, as usual.
Aiwolf: "The movie followed the comic page for page, left maybe two scenes out..."
There were more than two major scenes out left out of Watchmen. Anybody with half a brain knows that. So you're wrong. And what the f*ck are you talking about Nighthawk for? Did we start talking about the Squadron Supreme or Defenders at some point? Or did you mean Nite Owl? For god's sake, if you're gonna try to prove that my statements are wrong and you're right, you could at least get the names of the characters right.
Aiiwolf:"V for Vendetta [I think the only thing they really altered and changed was that natalie portman was suppose to be HOOKER, and they changed her character...no biggie, but overall it followed the graphic novel]"
I wasn't arguing that Evey was a prostitute in the graphic novel. I was pointing out that it was hardly the "only thing they really altered or changed." There are at least 3 other major changes from the comic book to the film. Once again you are wrong.
And don't whip out the "I've got so many comic books that I can't remember every detail argument."
First of all, exactly how many comics do you think is alot. I'm willing to bet there are 1000 people on this site that have more than you and can still remember the facts.
Second, if you're going to make a statement of fact, than you better be right about it. If that means you have to dig in your long boxes and find the comic that has the information than do it.
So you're either stupid, lazy or both. In any of those scenarios you shouldn't be making any statements at all.
alten2345 - 5/26/2009, 5:56 PM
***NightOWl, my bad. I guess, I was thinking about something else while i was typing a response to you...or maybe because I remembered THE HAWKS ID...lol.
Nah, I'm not going to DIG through anything, if you want to correct me thats fine...but i'm not going to be HALF the NERD you are...to waste my time going through 10 boxes, and 3 shelves. lol....[frick] that! LOL
I dont mind the correction btw, but as for V for vendetta goes, No. I think they altered and changed a few things because of society and people with conservative views....but eh. Whether taking the mask off or not...dont care. If they dont added it, or change a small detail doesnt bother me as long as they dont change the origins or story. I dont think I'm wrong at all, depends on what point of view youre looking at...What I said was a Main thing, now with the other three thinsg you said they left out...What are they? Explain that to me...since i'm so dumb, stupid and lazy to look for it myself? lol....
And lastly, I dooo have alot of comics. :) ...and no not everyone is going remember detail for each character not unless your a [frick]ing nerd about it...plus with the new writers...their lives get changed...no point keeping up with it when you weaken a character or make him stronger, or change his life...I wrote what I THOUGHT i knew of Wolverine through the comics I have, and came to find out the new writer pretty much chnaged and added thinsg to his life...changed up his whole origins. So knowing that, not going to both going throught those comics lol...maybe wikipedia or marvel or dc.com from now on lol
Aiiwolf - 5/26/2009, 6:09 PM
How old are you btw? lol
Aiiwolf - 5/26/2009, 6:12 PM
@Aiwolf
You're calling me a nerd? LMFAO. That is funny considering some of the statements you've made on here. If that makes me a nerd, so be it.
As for V for Vendetta, how about the fact that they changed V? I think that's a pretty big deal in my opinion. In the comic book he's an anarchist. In the movie, not so much. He's just as interested in revenge as destabilizing the government. Or how about the fact they changed Gordon Dietrich into a TV show host in the movie.
The problem with you is that you act like an authority on the things you talk about, but you never have your facts straight.
And all you do is make excuses. First it's "oh I knew that, I was just kidding." Now it's, "well things change so much I'm not going to go and check everything out." Excuses, excuses. I'm willing to bet that's the main problem people have with the things you say.
I thought v acted as an anarchist...I know why you would say that because it didnt feel that way on screen...Thats kind of how i felt about christian bale as john conner. The way he presented his character...was John Conner doing what did in the movie for himself?...or for the resistance?
so youre saying I should just admitt I am wrong, and listen to my elders with know and fact. I need to quit being that whiny jedi knight anakin skywalker and listen to good ole OBi Wan? Is that what youre saying Alten2345?
@Aiiwolf
No not at all. Just make sure you have your facts straight when you make a statement of fact. And don't make excuses when you're wrong. Believe me, they're are tons of people on here that do the same thing and I correct them too.
As a side note, I saw what you said about bashing Revenge of the Fallen. I probably will be too if they concentrate on Shia and Megan again. Michael Bay's humor blows ass and all his movies look and sound the same. Watch Armageddon and then Transformers. You'll see what I mean
@ Alten2345 ...thanks, man. :)
LOL...I know! Dude, Did you watch the ISLAND....that had the same feeling as Trandsformers...but the difference was it was originally implied as a love story of two clones. I think that is pretty much the only Michael Bay movie I "like" like. lol. One thing I can say about Michael Bay is that hes very good at presenting his material through trailers, which is why I say trailers are damn misleading these days.
Megan fox is just eyecandy. Shia Labeouf I see him becoming a great actor one day, I saw that scene where he looked like he was going to cry when he yelled out "Optimis!"...I really hope they focus on the back story, and more character development between the robots themselves, and the brotherhood.
The trailers to Armageddon and T:ROTF are nearly the same...that scene where Liv Tyler cries....and a TEAR COMES DOWN HERE CHEEK while shes holding onto ben affleck....is nearly the same next to megan fox holding her hands as if she praying...and having the tear come down her cheek...Michael bay always does cheesy shit like that uahaha!
