Christopher Nolans vs JJ Abrams: Which movie approach do you prefer?

Who's movie magic makes you go all warm and tingly inside?

JJ Abrams is a master of the pre-release tease? Nolan just doesn't want any information getting out.

Abrams is more of a true science fiction spinner with time travel, kaiju monsters, and parallel universe credits in his body of work. Nolan often goes for the more cerebral and realistic, yet his movies are still incredibly thought provoking and complex; explaining the extraordinary in such away that it seems plausible.

Abrams (in one role or another) has the properties, Cloverfield,Lost, Fringe,Alias, Mission Impossible III, Star Trek, and the recent Super 8. Nolan has created Memento, The Prestige, Insomnia, Inception, the Batman Franchise, and will have creative input on the Superman re-imagining.

While all of the above properties are stylistically different, they were/are/will be met with relative critical success. But as fans, which approach appeals to you more in the comic book movie genre? Do you think the air of mystery Abram creates with his movies would work with a super-hero? Does Nolan's approach work with other characters besides Batman?

I for one, think Nolan was the perfect storm for a character like Batman. The grittiness of Gotham and the incredible will that Batman utilizes to get things done lend's itself to the type of multifaceted world and complex characters that Nolan creates. Would a gritty Superman work? Captain America? Fantastic Four? Would a superhero movie thrive in a world and story as complex as Inception? Abrams, to me, is what M. Night Shyamalan's career should've been. Mystery, wrapped in a believable atmosphere without cliched twists. I feel this approach should be the blueprint for super-hero movies. Too often the movies are 1-dimensional, with no surprises and no cerebral suspense. You can make a solid movie this way but not a great one(See Thor).

Now, I've had this idea in my mind for some time as to which director I would like to see direct some of my favorite heroes on the big screen. Now I'd like to ask you guys, which one do you prefer? Which one would you choose to direct origin stories for

Wolverine, Iron Fist, West Coast Avengers, Dr. Fate, Legion of Superheroes, and Hour Man?

God dammit this is a hard question to answer. I really like both.

I mean i like BOTH of their approaches. Nolan revitalized the Batman franchise his own way- he toned down the action just a notch ie- in the Burton films Bruce was Batman right away and started kicking major ass. While in 'Begins' it took him a while to become Batman and the fight scenes weren't all that clear. The main strength and vigor Nolan gave to the Batman films is his deeply-layered story-telling that really keeps the viewer entranced and of course guessing.

Abrams revitalized the Trek franchise by adding in buttloads of much-needed action and made it way more flashy for viewers. I loved the old Trek stuff but I also liked how Abrams approached it differently and brought something new and yes- FLASHY to it. They (Nolan/Abrams) both revitalized these franchises their own way but it worked well for them individually.

Like i said- both are great directors.

true.....we have yet to see what Nolan Snyder can do with Superman but i wonder what it would look like if Nolan and Abrams worked together on it instead of Nolan and Snyder???? just saying.

Simple, Abrams is awesome with sci-fi stories while Nolan works well with realism and psychology.

For people who want the pure comic book fantasy and sci fi stories (Fantastic Four, X-Men, Flash, Captain Marvel, Justice League), Abrams is the best for all the things we like to see in comic books. For the more detective like comics and realistic stories (Heroes for Hire, Question, Moon Knight, Daredevil, Punisher, Green Arrow), those films are good for Nolan.

And since majority of comic book stories are nothing but sci-fi and fantasy; I suppose JJ Abrams is the best director for these movies. Unless the Man of Steel movie incorporrates all the elements from the Superman comic well; than it is yet to be determine who is indeed better.

@BigK1337- basically...Abrams would be better as a scientist...while Nolan would be better as a psychologist. LOL

Abrams is the guy!
I really love some of Nolan's work. Prestige is one of my five all time favorite movies and his Batman movies are pretty good. But J.J. Abrams is THE guy. He just puts lots of energy in things, lots of emotions, he dares to go to a different places, puts wit in his dialog and really gets it right. Nolan is too busy to keep it cool, keep it realistic and down-to-earth... It makes his work more stylish, but more cold and limited. You can imagine Abrams doing detective stuff and psychopaths (like in Dark Knight)and you can imagine Abrams doing some sort of in-dream reality (like in Inception) and you know he will do that pretty good. But you can never imagine Nolan doing aliens and parallel realities and fancy/funny spy stuff, you know... Abrams is just free to do whatever he wants and he does it great! :)

Actually, one of the editors must have deleted it. I didn't even get the chance to read your comment.

Abrams is great and all but his directing resume has nothing on Chris Nolan. This isn't a fair fight in my opinion.
