Joss Whedon Refutes Claims Of $100M Salary For THE AVENGERS 2

As only Joss Whedon can, the director of Marvel's The Avengers says the Deadline report on his salary for The Avengers 2 is simply not true. What does this mean for the accuracy of the other details on salary negotiations with the cast?

The reports on Marvel Studios contentious contract negotiations with its principle talent has left the majority of the Marvel faithful a little bit on edge. However, Avengers director Joss Whedon has felt the need to speak out on the portion of that report from Deadline concerning his Marvel fee and refutes the claim that he's receiving such a large figure. If that's inaccurate, how true is the rest of the report?

Hi guys.

I was going to let it slide, but I've got this sour taste in my mouth. (Mmmm, lemonade!). Some facts are not facts. I'm not going to go into the whole thing, but jeepers, I'm not getting $100 mil on Avengers 2. If I were, I would come on this site and laugh and laugh and laugh. I'm not making Downey money. I'm making A LOT, which is exciting. I'm not pretending to be a poor farmer, an Everyman, an ANYman. But that number is nuts. A few other things about me that have been "reported" that people should take with a grain of salt:

That I throw wild Hollywood parties where everyone is naked and dancing and wild and I remember to serve enough snacks.

That I can get a movie greenlit by sighing and staring into the middle distance.

That I ate a unicorn and made it winter for three years.

That I "can write."

Well, that's a load off. Sorry to get so personal -- the whole thing's a bit tawdry. But honestly, it bugged me. I'm off for a nice juicy steak. There's a place downtown that does it with rosemary butter, it tastes just like unico -- like a steak.

BYE-ee! J.

He's not making that kind of money. Marvel would have found someone else who was cheaper. I didn't believe the earlier reports about the cast fighting for more money, besides RDJ, and I won't believe it until one of the actors comes out and says so. The actors are under contract. I'm not going to worry about this stuff.

I think he took a "Nicholson", like Joker Jack did in the very first Batman movie a tiny salary and a small percentage of merchandise or revenue.
Either way he is vital to the Studio and to the story.

These are studio flicks not indie movies, he's gonna get paid well but the studio are the real winners in these kind of movies. They get all the lion-share percentages on every profit margin made on tickets and merchandise that amounts to billions. Directors basically get a nice one off cheque unless they've slewed for a deal that gives them a percentage of the profits (small) In that case it's still subjective to Hollywood accounting where the studio accountants can wrangle the overheads to show multi million box office takings as non profitable against trumped up costs. This means nobody gets paid their full royalties as usual and is pretty much common practice.

@banesmash

He didn't deny that he's making a lot of money from this, he just denied the statement that he is bringing in $100 million from it.

@ kemuael

if the avengers 2 makes anywhere near the $1.5 billion the first movie made,do you honest believe they're gonna give a shit that you two aren't interested in seeing it.

your £10 or what $15 wherever you are from is gonna mean jack shit to the final total.

My guess is Nikki over at deadline is exaggerating because is trying to get more readers and help the actors at marvel get better deals. She might have written the article as a favor to CAA to be honest. With Joss refuting her claims in the article, she is looking like a jerk. She acts like Feige is a bully and is making a lot of enemies in Hollywood, and that actors are less keen to work with marvel. And yet from the casting rumors we get here, Marvel has no shortage of actors wanting in on the marvel francise.

No G-fart, I also could give a rats ass what these actors make as long as we get them in the movies we want to see. This obsession over what they make is ludicrous.
