Kevin Feige Talks About The New Approach Of The Hulk In The Avengers

Kevin Feige sat down to talk a little bit about what The Hulk is going to look like in next Summers The Avengers saying that he will be about the same size as he was in The Incredible Hulk, but not as cut.

On the last day of San Diego Comic Con Marvel unveiled their last Avengers character poster featuring The Hulk. While being the last poster to complete the bigger banner of The Avengers it also gave us our first look of how The Hulk is going to look in The Avengers. Kevin Feige sat down with The L.A. Times Hero Complex where he talked a little bit about what The Hulk will look like saying they are not going to try and reinvent the wheel.

On if there will be anything substantially different in the visual realization of the Hulk:

"Well, I don’t know about substantially different. It will be as different as ”The Incredible Hulk” was from Ang Lee’s “Hulk” in terms of its look and design, but it is Hulk. The image we released on the last day of Comic-Con — which got a tremendous amount of attention and I was very pleased about — is a very good representation of what he’s going to look like. Hulk is Hulk. We’re not going to reinvent the wheel."

On how big he will be:

"He’ll be about the same size he was in “The Incredible Hulk” [which was about 9 feet tall] or maybe a little bit smaller. His muscles won’t be quite as cut. We figure he’s been the Hulk now for a few years and [his physique is changing]. He’s not as cut or as ripped as he was in “The Incredible Hulk.” The most important thing is that face. As you can already see in that concept painting, it is — more than any Hulk that’s ever been done in live action — a Hulk that let’s you see the actor in there. You will be able to see Ruffalo in there. That was a big revelation for us. It’s just a concept painting, but in that you can see the [influence of Marvel Comics pioneer and original Hulk artist Jack] Kirby, as people have already pointed out, but also, and equally important in this case, Ruffalo’s eyes and his cheek structure. It is him."

On it being a different approach than Louis Letterrier’s movie:

It is. It was something we actively avoided before. Hulk was Hulk, he’s not any one actor and Hulk should look like Hulk. It was like Iron Man’s armor, in a way, it wouldn’t change depending on the actor wearing it. But we’ve taken a different approach because Hulk is Banner and, frankly, we came to question our approach. Why are we not doing it this way? So we did a few designs that put Ruffalo into it, and we immediately saw how much more you feel for the creature. When you keep that connection going between Banner and the Hulk and you have characters around him trying to reach Banner inside — “Bruce, calm down,” and all of that classic Hulk stuff — it means more if you see the same actor throughout. I think before it was something we thought might look silly. We were nervous about getting it good enough [via visual effects] to work. Frankly, it was the same way we were nervous early on about making Steve Rogers skinny for “Captain America.” Is this going to look disturbing? Is this going to look silly? In the end, we got that one right. We’re going to get this one right."

The Avengers hits theaters on May 4, 2012.

I like it! It's better if you can see Ruffalo.

It looks good and Kirbyfied. I don't dislike it.

I'm just a huge fan of TIH and thought he looked great in it. Less animal, more raging green human! The set pieces looked superb. I'm a bit biased as it was my favourite Marvel Studios movie until I saw Thor.

It just disappoints me that they seen to describe things done in TIH negatively. And they (particularly Feige) seem to treat TIH like some abortion or paedo family member they wish to disassociate themselves with.

I'll save my concerns for after viewing...I'm sure they'll do him just fine!

@Ckal... Completely agree. It was too cut. So to tone that down a little bit won't be huge.

Ruffalo isn't pudgy. He dropped a lot of weight for the role because they wanted him to be skinny like banner.

Good. They're emphasizing more on the monster that is the Hulk. The Mr. Hyde to Dr. Banner.

Hulk really doesn't need to look like a massive body builder, he's not strong because he's got big ripped muscles. It's the rage that makes him strong.

It's the same with superman, he doesn't need to look like he's on steroids.

Looks cool, for sure, but really not needed. Batman, wolverine, characters like that benefit from their muscles.

If hulk looks/acts like an ape or resembles Frankenstein I'll get a tad fussy. Hulk should look like a badass powerhouse. Not a retard.

Im quite fond of this new design, in my opinion it looks better than nortons hulk, which I didnt think I would say before I saw this.

@grimlock - no you're right I dont read hulk, but there are plenty of people on here do, and like this design, you should probably take your nerd rage elsewhere you angry child. If its not for you fine, but they arent making the film just for you, so chill dude.

Well in the MCU Banner was born on December 18th 1968. Which by my crude, basic maths makes him 43 by the time The Avengers is released.

So he is gonna be a hulk knocking on middle aged.

Admittedly their are a number of loop holes in this argument (The Avengers might not be set in 2012, The Hulk is a super powered creature unencumbered by the ravages of time, etc) but I am still putting that thought out there.

@ Intruder

Grimlock likes to act like he knows exactly what the Hulk should look like, and that he's some expert on the character.

I find it funny that he acts like anyone that doesn't like this design is ignorant, especially considering the Hulk has gone through all different looks over the years due to his body, form, and mutation constantly changing.

some expert...

Not that I hate Feige or anything like that, but I can't understand how he could say that the Hulk won't be as "cut" as he was in the Incredible Hulk due to the fact that his been the the Hulk for sometime already. It sounds to me like his affectively saying that the Hulk (not Banner) ages and as such gets a little (for lack of a better word) flabbier. I don't want the Hulk to be a flabby. I won't the Hulk to be (I know this sounds gay....apologies) cut and ripped.
