VACATION Writers Reveal Why Marvel Studios Chose Them To Pen SPIDER-MAN Reboot

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein recently confirmed that they are indeed writing Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man reboot, and talk here about how exactly they convinced the studio.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (whose credits include The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Horrible Bosses) were among those considered to direct Marvel's Spider-Man reboot, but pretty much all of us forgot about the other candidates when it was announced that Jon Watts will direct Tom Holland in the movie. That made it all the more surprising when the duo were revealed to be the writers of the movie, and they expanded on that in a recent interview with Deadline. 

"Our agent helped get our foot in the door with Marvel, sending them a script we had written, and letting them know our track record and that we’d love to move from broad comedy to action and action comedy," Goldstein reveals. "Also, it helped that Kevin Feige wanted to draw on the spirit of John Hughes for this Spider-Man, and we had just written and directed a sequel to a John Hughes-created franchise with Vacation. We’d pitched ourselves to both write and direct, and so our pitch included a pretty extensive story outline that appealed to them. After Jon Watts got the directing job, they came back and asked if we would be interested in doing the script."

There are some very interesting titbits of information here. For starters, it sounds like Marvel's Spider-Man will be an action comedy, while Kevin Feige (who has already confirmed that we'll see a villain who hasn't appeared in a movie before) was clearly taken by their story outline, the details of which will likely remain secret for the time being. just make sure the plot is solid, the bad guy isn't rather one dimensional (i guess it's highly probable once they choose some lesser villain like Shocker or Hydro - Man) and he won't be turned into some kind of monster.

not much of a remake but the continuation rather. Chevy Chase is also in the movie as i recall.

Seriously Marvel and Sony, what the [frick] are you doing with Spider-Man? Spider-Man is Marvel's mascot. He is to Marvel what Batman is to DC.

Batman has Ben Affleck writing and directing. He's won an Oscar for best film and won an Oscar for best writing. I'd say only 3% of comic fans aren't hyped by a Batfleck written and directed Batman film.

Hell Gambit has Rupert Wyatt who's a better director than Watts.

Considering you have Disney's resources, Sony's resources, and the fact Marvel Studios is possibly the hottest franchise in the biz, as fanboys put it, you couldn't get any proven talent on the biggest character in you're cinematic universe who you really need to win fans over? I mean this is the third Spidey in 13 years. Why should I get excited?

Kind of like how fans held off judgment on TASM2 before it came out and are holding judgment with Fant4stic and X-Men Apocalypse.

If it looks like shit and acts like shit, it's shit. These writers haven't done anything noteworthy.

I don't mind Holland or Marisa but all I get is a big ball of meh from these writers and director.

Like I said before, I trust Marvel to not completely screw over Spider-Man. If they trust these writers with a huge character like this then it must be for a reason. Whatever they wrote before is irrelevant to me now, I'm rooting for them to knock this out of the park.

I just want an awesome Spider-Man movie, that's it.

i think Spiderman will turn up be good comedy/John Hughes teen movie but i highly doubt the plot will be very good (decent at least) or the villain will end up being exceptional. Just watch what villain will they choose. Lesser villain - forgettable villain. And i doubt they go high ranking villain for young Peter (like Hobgoblin maybe)

@LEVITIKUZ I was behind Goddard doing Spider-Man, but then the Sony emails leaked out. He wanted Spider-Man to have the symbiote suit but then tear it off because his Sinister Six buddies laugh at him.
Not excited for the writers or the director for what they've done before, but I trust Feige's judgement.
