With pre-production in full-swing, a confirmed release date of December 18, 2015, has been set for Lucasfilm's highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII.

"We're very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture," said Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios.

Star Wars: Episode VII will be directed by J.J. Abrams (Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek) and is being scripted by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi). Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII.

Shooting is scheduled to begin spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios.

No story credit for Arndt? Too bad, I like the guy. Exciting news!

That date makes complete sense though. The Hobbit trilogy will have ended so this will fill that Holiday void (no competition from Avatar 2 either). And it won't get lost in an already crowded summer. It breaks with tradition, but at least Star Wars will be special again (so to speak).

It's hard to get excited about this. Controversial director, a whole team of writers were fired and replaced, then requests to postpone the release date were completely turned down by the studio even though it's obvious it's being rushed, plus it's pretty much confirmed that old Han Solo and Leia and Luke are going to have prominent parts in the movie; they have to rely on past success to move the new story forward. It's like the movie can't get out of its own way. Obviously too early to make a final judgment, but we'll see...

I'm glad it's later rather than sooner. Gives them time to make the best damn Star Wars movie they can.

And screw this "It HAS to be May" bs. Who says? Did God say all Star Wars movies have to come out in May? I'd rather a December release that's done [mostly] right than a rush job to make it for the "holy month."

Perfect date for it. Gets it away from the competition and puts it in prime movie real estate. 2015 is going to be a hell of a year!

Great news! Now need some casting news, of which I think JJ will handle well. His films are often well casted.

Anyone who cries about it NOT being in May is a just a total asshole. Seriously. How does it hurt or change a damn thing. If anything matters it's that a Marvel movie comes out the day before Free Comic Book Day and even that barely matters. Disney isn't going to have Star Wars compete with Age of Ultron's revenue. May psh....May you get over it or get a life or get [frick]ed if you harbor any ill will for this release date not being in May. [frick] off. I'm done.

They really must be behind schedule. By the way, i know that we should wait for the plot of the movie but what do you guys think of "The Brisk Alliance" as a subtitle for episode 7.

This is a win all around because Paramount was hinting at hiring the Attack the Block director to take over the Star Trek film series with a 2014 start of production.

Look at the 2015 release schedule. Its wide open in May (which has 5 weekends that year) because everybody was waiting to see when Star Wars would come out.

So far only the Avengers AOU (May 1st) and some animated film about trucks(May 29th)
are on the slate. That leaves an open Memorial Day weekend (a huge summer release window in America) and room for another Star Trek film to fill the need for SCI-FI that summer.

Fact that we will get to see a sequel the old Star Wars is still bizarre to me. I was googling "new star wars" since '05, god I love this!

Will break the box office recors no doubt.
