I think I speak for anyone who is a CBM fan, that it feels good to be able to finally have a title to this movie, it is not like it is that much different from what we all have been calling it before, besides the subtitle, but it feels good to be able to officially call it “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and to use the inevitable abbreviations such as BvS, DoJ or BvSDoJ.  Beyond expressing a relief from not having to type a “tentatively titled” before Batman v Superman, I can’t say many positive things about the title that was chosen. Perhaps allow me to explain before I get crucified.

Objectively speaking, my first impression of the “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” title is that is very pretentious. I use the word “pretentious” because what the title very shamelessly aims to do. Just in case you have been living under a rock for the last year, this alluring title was designed to remind everyone that Batman, DC and Warner’s most recognizable and profitable comic book property will be indeed fighting Superman in a movie that, more than a Man of Steel sequel, will be a prelude to the Justice League movie.

It’s obvious that the title was chosen for being strategically to set up expectation for what will follow which is the Justice League movie. Perhaps this is the most disappointing part of all, that rather than the title being something that pays tribute the history of the characters, like Man of Steel and The Dark Knight did, it is a title created from a very direct, because there is nothing subtle about the title, sales stand point.

The worse part is that it this title validates what a lot of people have been complaining about for months and opens the floodgate for more mockery. Yes, there has been some positive response, but most of the social media has jumped in the “this is in fact a set up for the Justice League movie” I told you so's and the [insert your own better or funnier title] band wagon. I am going to go on a limb and assume that wasn't’t the reaction WB was expecting, especially after the all the much needed positive buzz that revealing new Batman created.

Now, let me be clear about something, this title and my dissent for it, is not a reflection on the quality of the movie. "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" may still become the greatest comic book based movie ever made; only time will tell.

What do you guys think? Do you agree with my assessment of the title? Do you feel this is the perfect title for this movie? Do you have a better title for this film? I personally believe “Man of Steel: The Dark Knight Returns” was a better fitting but that’s just my opinion. As always, leave your thoughts down below and thank you for reading.

As for the title, I think it's okay. I like that they actually got Batman and Superman into the title, and the Justice hint is kinda cool too. Just a little long, although I guess it's kinda hard finding a half way decent title that has "Batman", "Superman", and "Justice" in it. I personally would have gone with Man of Steel: Shadow of the Bat, but I'm content with what we got. It could have been much, much, much worse.

@Brainiac13- I was going to include an assessment about the logo as well, but to be honest it would have been highly critical of it too.

@BatManiac-Thanks, I hope the movie isn't a reflection of the title as well

@MrBlackJack-Agree with you there.

The flattened, steel looking logo for Supes is pretty badass. Disappointed they didn't go with it.

MrBlackJack - 5/21/2014, 4:37 PM
And the flattened Bat logo looks much better as well (in my opinion).

This is a prelude to Justice League. Trust me. WB is going full speed ahead. They don't want to wait anymore.

Plus the Supes logo from comic con reminds me of this
MrBlackJack
MrBlackJack - 5/21/2014, 4:41 PM
^^^Which I thought was kinda cool because the Reeve Superman was ideally what Superman should eventually become (minus some of the corniness). So with the MOS logo it was rough and jagged (as he should be in his early days)), just how Superman was in the film. With that comic con logo, it gave the impression that Supes was going to be more refined and like the Reeve version.
MrBlackJack
MrBlackJack - 5/21/2014, 4:43 PM
And I know the logo has absolutely no effect on the actual quality or direction of the film (and always have known), but it was just a connection that I had made, a connection that I thought was pretty cool.

@MrBlackJack-That's a really great observation about the Superman emblem, hopefully some of Reeve's Superman shows up in BvS :)

Yeah, the title signals that Justice League is coming. What exactly is wrong with that? I love the title. It's much better than "World's Finest" (which general audiences would not have understood), or just using "Batman vs. Superman."

Oh, and about the last thing I want in this movie is any hint of the Reeve Superman. Superman II was good, the rest kinda sucked and Reeve's Superman is way too corny.
KallarkKent
KallarkKent - 5/21/2014, 5:43 PM
@Lhornbkk- I hear ya, I'm sure that making sure general audiences wouldn't be confused about he title was a factor into deciding what to call the movie. I think Reeve's Superman will remain where it is, the grounded Superman seen in MoS will be the Superman we'll be seeing in movies for a long time :)

Good article! Besides the obvious reason that WB/DC is playing catch up with Marvel Studio; the title uses the words Batman and Superman just to Compete against Captain America 3 on May 6, 2016. It's a marketing strategy instead of something respectful to the franchise.

So, WB finally gave in. As though they had no choice.
What else could go wrong if they'd simply entitled it that way. Batman and Superman in the title are sure win, already!

You, know, all these times we were cautioned by them that superhero code names are to be ashamed of. I believe it started in The Dark Knight. Wherein the word Batman was mentioned less than in Batman Begins. Then in The Dark Knight Rises, he was referred to as "him or he". Plus, Selina Kyle was never called Catwoman.
WB's hesitation about calling Superheroes by their names has become even more evident in Man of Steel. The Ka-el guy never called himself "Superman". He never even thought the S on his chest was a letter S, even though he grew up and studied on Earth. Or maybe he was just shallow. When Lois suggested the name "Superm-", she was rudely interrupted. And when the Radio man in the war room called him "Superman" to the General, the General and everybody else present in the room started staring at him like he was crazy.
Lastly, Oliver Quinn in the TV show Arrow said that "Green Arrow" name for his vigilante persona was LAME.
The supposed then discontinued Wonder Woman TV show was entitled Amazon. And the Flash spin off to Arrow had no title for a very long time. I once thought they might go for The Fastest Man Alive. Which would sound even more lame.
It was frustrating and quite offensive to DC.
That explains why WB had a hell of a hard time thinking of a title for the MOS sequel. Instead, they wasted their time coming up with outrageous titles like “Man of Steel Battle the Knight”, “Man of Steel Beyond Darkness”, “Man of Steel Black of Knight”, “Man of Steel Darkness Falls”, “Man of Steel Knight Falls”, “Man of Steel Shadow of the Night”, “Man of Steel The Blackest Hour”, and “Man of Steel The Darkness Within”...whatever. There wasn't even a Batman or a Superman in them.

I'm glad they got around it.

"the title uses the words Batman and Superman just to Compete against Captain America 3 on May 6, 2016. It's a marketing strategy instead of something respectful to the franchise."

You say that as if other studios don't do the same thing.

You do realize that the first Cap movie was called "Captain America: The First Avenger" right..?

And the second movie in some countries was simply called "The Return of the First Avenger".

I think it's OK. I'm glad they didn't go with Man of Steel 2: batman-related sub-title, because all of those suggestions were terrible. This recognizes both characters AND sets up J League. I can't wait.

Batman and Superman fight. It sets up a Justice League movie. What more is there to analyze from that title? I think World's Finest would have been cool but the general audience has no idea what the hell that means so WB decided to play it safe, which will pay off immensely.

Plus you can still have a Superman sequel with that title. His name is in the title, after all.
