Transformers 3 to Have Less Action

Michael Bay reveals some plans for Transformers 3 and how he wants to approach it.
One of the issues people had with Transformers 2 was that it had too much action and not enough story. Well it looks like the production group took our feelings to heart and now plans to approach Transformers 3 with more story and less confusing big robot action scenes are underway.

In the Transformers 2 special feature "The All Spark Experiment," director Michael Bay talks about some of his ideas for Transformers 3. Here is what he said:

"It can't get bigger, we have to figure out to go sideways and I'm wondering where to start. What I'm doing is having Hasbro send me tons of lore and stuff like that, things that we can draw from, and I just have to let it simmer. Definitely more has to be made of Bumblebee in the third one, that's a relationship you want to explore more. And I think we're definitely going to get more into the robot characters.

This movie got very big, very grand, we've covered a lot of ground. The third one doesn't have to be as big, we could go darker. It definitely has to be more emotional, it not going to be just about action, action, action. And that's where I think T3 might potentially go, where things are more undercover and not as exposed."

If this truly ends up happening I think Transformers 3 could be better than the second one and possibly even the first one.

He says "T3" and I'm thinking "didn't they already make that pile of monkey flop?" Then the hamster starts turning the squeky wheel in my head. He definately needs to throw in the dinobots and leave out the "jive talkin'" autobots from the 2nd one.

hopfully he sticks to that

First was cool. Second was cool (opinionated, obviously), and hopefully the third Will B. Good. But the idea of less action seems a bit ridiculous. The action and comedy are the only things that seems to keep these films up. And recently, everybody is hating the comedy.

MORE SOUNDWAVE!!!!
dellamorte1872 - 11/3/2009, 7:36 PM
I think it would be cool if the next one took place more in space or have Dino bots. Just to have something different than the usual fight with Megatron.
BatmanKnight - 11/3/2009, 7:40 PM
Maybe Grimlock challenges Optimus for control of the autobots? Sam (Spike) gets put in the cobbled together body of an autobot and flips? (First one serious, 2nd not so much despite I loved that ep.)

Micheal Bay says less action and more. . . story?

Damn, the apocalypse is upon us already
MultiPurposePoni - 11/3/2009, 8:07 PM
Nobody thinks the action was weak from Bay's films! This guy needs to sit back and think about this. It was the story and editing which was the problem in the last two films. The character development was weak and shallow concerning all the robots. Removing action, will only further reveal how pointless his movies really are! Big mistake.

"What I'm doing is having Hasbro send me tons of lore and stuff like that, things that we can draw from, and I just have to let it simmer."

Where was all that...YESTERDAY????

Phinehas - 11/3/2009, 8:17 PM
the first movie was great the second one was goood
flames809 - 11/3/2009, 8:25 PM
More plot, less action?! WTF! Is Michael Bay even capable of that?!! As long as he kills off that vacuum-headed ditz Fox, I MIGHT go and see the next one!
loganoneil - 11/3/2009, 9:08 PM
get a better writter
tyko450 - 11/3/2009, 9:57 PM
Was he suddenly visited by the ghosts of movie makers past?
Bay, "I will start anew,I will make amendsand I will make quite certain that the story ends on a note of hope,on a strong amen, and I'll thank the world and remember when I was able to begin again!"

big cbm no prize to anyone who can place that quote.
thwhtGuardian - 11/3/2009, 10:13 PM
Just have Megan Fox naked with a background of explosions, it'll make money.
ClintEastwood - 11/3/2009, 10:26 PM
watch this be like him lying to us again.
i recall him saying that a certain decepticon wasn't coming back to life and now look at megatron.
also....
think about when this interview was filmed.
i think he was just basically spitballing and as of right then almost had no idea what the sequel would be about.
and has anyone ever seen a michael bay sequel? the day that he doesn't try to make his next movie bigger is the day that dragonball evolution becomes a cult classic.
Wadey09 - 11/3/2009, 11:08 PM
I wouldn't be surprised wadey
thwhtGuardian - 11/3/2009, 11:37 PM
Not bumblebee again! Take out the [frick]ed up twins, bring back a rejuvinated jetfire, less focuss on megan fox, more on her tits, bring in the dinobots!
Spilox - 11/4/2009, 12:29 AM
if you are going to focus more on the story this time then bb needs a fuking voice. also tf 1 and 2 did not make so much money because people wanted to see people talking.
grif - 11/4/2009, 12:45 AM
Less action? What the hell?

The action was the best thing about Transformers 2, and it was even better than the action in Transformers 1. Optimus Prime wasn't such a pussy, and the other Transformers had some sweet highlights. The story was the problem, so fix the d--- story and don't touch the action.
BLACKWINGS17 - 11/4/2009, 8:52 AM
why??
why bay is trying the odd path.Trans 2 was centuries better than "made for oscar, boring gay stuff".
Action defines hollywood,if i really wished to watch ponderous movies when i'm fed up of my life,i'll be preferring iranian crap.
Actio,Explosion n more action wanted.
fcuk critics,it made $ 832 mill ww,what more u want.

stories???? does he mean the shitty human sidestories....hell no..
bullsize - 11/4/2009, 9:05 AM
Throw in the Dinobots, Superion or Omega Supreme! And lets finally show Cybertron!
mobile1ph - 11/4/2009, 9:28 AM
WHAT?!?!??!! no more KABOOM, KAPOW, KABRZZKK???!?!?!

boring..
sadmamba - 11/4/2009, 9:36 AM
just prequel it and take out all humans. do the whole movie from cybertron. and NO megan fox looking transformer, i know he was thinking it.
lvlheaded - 11/4/2009, 9:54 AM
alright - so we're gonna get Transformers 2.5 with less action and more Bay dialogue?

sounds like a winner.
Keven - 11/4/2009, 10:03 AM
mmm. The action was the only thing stopping me from walking out of that last tard fest. And he wants LESS of it? Maybe if he focuses more on the actual Transformers like he says then it could work..just keep the mentally challenged human characters away from it!
Rorschach01 - 11/4/2009, 10:11 AM
true, action was the only good thing from the second one. just put less humorless jokes and more character development
droopy1317 - 11/4/2009, 10:25 AM
I can't believe people are complaining about adding plot to transformers.
thwhtGuardian - 11/4/2009, 10:47 AM
scrooge from the Broadway musical! No prize for me!
cincyboy - 11/4/2009, 10:57 AM
Hmmmmmm.....more focus on the robots? I like that part of it. More plot & character development could be really awesome.

Also I'd love to see the Dinobots, namely, Grimlock.........but........I also wanted to see Devastator......and he had.....big....metal....balls....*sniffle*
Runefyst - 11/4/2009, 11:12 AM
Hope he don't mean more sam and his annoying ass room-mate, or agent Simmons. MOre cybertron
SHHH - 11/4/2009, 11:26 AM
cincyboy good job lol

thwhtGuardian - 11/4/2009, 11:54 AM
Im down for more story even though Im an action fan. But the story needs to be about the relationships that the robots have with each other, not with sam. Add more auto bots im tired of Prime being the only bot with lines, seems like a cop-out. Hell they dont even have to put people in the movie for all I care.

There is a lot of great oprotunities to do some great stuff here(character wise) but sadly it will be a movie about bumble bee and sam. F@#$ Bumble Bee and F@#$ Sam.

Bring back Jazz, Give us Dinobots, and the rest of the main autobots and give them ALL MORE SPEAKING PARTS
thatiscrazy - 11/4/2009, 1:02 PM
galvatron, hot rod, dinobots and ultramagnus...and UNICRON for jeezus sakes...that's what we need to salvage the shit made for part 2 ROTF
Anil Rickly - 11/4/2009, 1:12 PM
What a load. They're just going to fill it with more cock jokes and ass jokes. Especially now that Orci and Kurtzman got tired of having their good ideas raped, so now, instead of any talent, we just have Mr. Kruger.

And for the record, you can get bigger, just get rid of all the patriotic military propaganda crap. The problem wasn't too much action, it was too much of that crap filling it up, as well as all the idiotic low-brow "humor" filling it up, so what enjoyable action there is is spread thinly throughout a swampland myriad of that crap.

I'd love to see a TF movie that did away with all that crap and focused on a Transformers story with good characters and good action.

But that's just not going to happen.

That would be nice, Transformers: Cybertron. They could make a movie of how they got in the crappy situation that they are in by having to come to earth. Then on the plus side, none of the human characters would be in the movie.
JerusalemJr - 11/4/2009, 2:54 PM
First one was cool with the arrival of both the autobots and decepticons and how there little story went. The 2nd one had way to much action and little story, I especially wanted more out of Devastator and More of a fight between Optimus and The Fallen. But I hope to see a way better story in the 3rd movie. I still want to see action, but i want a better story, hands down
Instantclassic - 11/4/2009, 2:57 PM
Michael Bay has said he will be cutting back the action and effects in favor of an actual story? Has Hell frozen over?

But seriously though. You wouldn't have to cut back on the action to still ahve a great story. I think I know what my next Fan-Fic will be!

I have an idea for an amazing Transformers 3 that will keep the same action as well as up the story. And it can be done with them keeping the annoying human characters as well.
THEHAWK - 11/4/2009, 3:38 PM
DID ANYONE SEE THE TRANSFORMERS ON CARTOON NETWORK WHICH THAT CARTOON TAKES PLACE IN OF ALL PLACES DETROIT MICHIGAN IN THE FUTURE, AND THE AUTOBOTS ARE NOT RUTHLESS SOLDIERS THEIR REPAIR BOTS WHO ARE BARELY HOLDING THEIR OWN AND GETTING LUCKY AGAINST MEGATRON. I HATE THIS SHOW!
JUST BE GLAD MICHEAL BAYS MOVIES DID NOT START LIKE THIS FOR TRANSFORMERS
thegamedrex - 11/4/2009, 7:06 PM
story better be good

dragonquest67 - 11/4/2009, 7:38 PM
BAY-CUTTING ACTION DOWN????????...........LET ME JUST SAY-YOU CANT MAKE A DOG BE A DUCK--THE ACTION WILL COME REGARDLESS
GUNSMITH - 11/5/2009, 7:15 AM
@thegamedrex - haha I think everybody forgot how crappy those cartoons where lol, I mean they where AWSOME but crappy. I think Bay hit the nail on the head ;)
thatiscrazy - 11/5/2009, 2:11 PM
A Michael Bay movie without action?....when is the part where Im supposed to take this seriously.
Retribution13 - 11/5/2009, 5:54 PM
hold on a second, you guys can't complain about michael bay making movies that are nothing but action, but then when he says he wants to make a more story driven movie you're still not pleased?

i understand people hate michael bay almost as much as brett ratner, but he's going to try to do exactly what people on this site say he SHOULD do. all i ever hear about MB is that he's "all explosions" and no story/character development. so how can you still talk noise when he says he's going to do those things? i don't get it.
CorndogBurglar - 11/5/2009, 9:01 PM
@ dragonquest, aka luffy

you, sir, are a douchebag
CorndogBurglar - 11/5/2009, 9:04 PM
Not really sure what all the hubbub is all about on this topic. Bay said he wanted to do the 3rd film the way most fans would like him to portray it. Focusing much more on the Transformers themselves. Sounds like a great idea. He'll have to tone down some action a lil because you cant have the transformers fighting each other the entire movie. Instead of having Hasbro send him folklore of the transformers he should probably just watch the 86' animated movie. That film was 99% transformes and the other 1% focused on every other creature in it. Im sure Bay realizes that the transformer films actually had the robots themselves as secondray characters to the human characters, which IMO was very wrong. Optimus should not be playing second fiddle to Sam.

I think the major complaint about both films is that a majority of fans feel that the robots played second fiddle, as i said before, to their human counterparts. Of course director and producers state, that to non transformer fans, having people in the film would ease the transition into belief that 30ft robots were tearing each other apart. Now that the first two films are out of the way Bay might be able to focus the entire movie on the Transformers and make for a much grittier and darker film showcasing the Autobot, Decepticon war.

Not really sure how the story will turnout, but Bay said he wants to do more with Bumblebee, which isnt a terrible thing. Im ready to hear Bee with some real dialouge. Bay will probably make Bee the primary protagonist through the movie but Bee will most likely still be surrounded by other transformers. Im sure Bay along with Spielberg will draw on some major brain power to bring an awesome 3rd installment to the Transformer franchise and it will leave all of us with a sigh of relief:)
