M. Night Talks Avatar: The Last Airbender Trilogy Details

The controversial Director shares the scoop on the possible yet inevitable Trilogy plans for Avatar: The Last Airbender
Thanks to lastairbenderfilm.com for breaking this news during a sit down with M. Night and producer Frank Marshall as they talk about how long it would take to make a Trilogy out of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

“We’re shooting them one at a time, because they’re being written one at a time,” says veteran producer… Frank Marshall. “Night is now working on the script for the second movie, but he hasn’t had time to write the second or third ones. He’s looking at the arc of all three. One of the things we’ll be doing is using the sets, ships and elements for each different nation in this film and incorporating them into movies two and three. We’re not waiting. There just isn’t enough time. Night will finish this movie, then the script and then we’ll prepare for the next one. I think it’ll probably happen over six years.”

Shyamalan also chimed in sharing his plans for the tone of Avatar.

“THE LAST AIRBENDER will be a very entertaining movie, a really fun summer film,” says Shyamalan. “But underneath that, it’s serious and talks about genocide, balance, our connection to the planet and all those things that interest me if you’ve seen the other movies that I’ve made. It felt like an important film.”

superdog - 7/3/2009, 3:55 PM
trilogies are SWEET! but lets just see how the first one does.

M. Night Shyamalan is good at what he does, so i can see a 3 movie saga
shadowboxer - 7/3/2009, 4:44 PM
given that the trees rebelled in the happening and poisoned us night says this “But underneath that, it’s serious and talks about genocide, balance, our connection to the planet and all those things that interest me if you’ve seen the other movies that I’ve made. It felt like an important film.”,,,wow i have never been so un-confident!!!...i aint a fan of avatar but if i were i would be quaking with fear

Anil Rickly - 7/3/2009, 4:50 PM
I am a fan and I am quaking with a lot of fear. When I saw his name on the trailer I was like "Damn-it!" But I hope he does justice to the series cause it is good. And he is mainly doing this for his daughter who is a big fan of the show, so lets just pray for the best.
Silentman - 7/3/2009, 5:14 PM
what makes M. The Dark Night a controversail director
DoIlookLIkeIGiveAFuk - 7/3/2009, 5:21 PM
he tries to have a twist too much...sometimes a straight laced flick wont kill...after sixth sense and unbreakable...it got old..cuz the twists sucked..esp in the village..
Anil Rickly - 7/3/2009, 5:23 PM
not sure what makes him controversial but i have faith in this movie. Hes being backed by a good studio in paramount and the teaser looks great. they have plenty of money to make an epic film and they have ILM doing the digital effects which means you can expect the fight scenes and all the effects to look amazing. And the story of the series is so great unlike the crap story of dragonball and most other animes.
ALmighty1080 - 7/3/2009, 5:27 PM
i wont see any of these crap movies.
grif - 7/3/2009, 5:29 PM
As long as they dont end up in a conservation park its ok....tho i do think a directir should have some idea of how he wants the story to progres if he wants a trilogy

AND HE BETTER BEND SHIT
teabag - 7/3/2009, 5:29 PM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I mean we say all his movies have a twist, but really most movies do. Also this is his first real big movie of this type, where its not really his story. So he has to follow more closely to the books and hopefully make it a good movie.
They all say their kids are fans and they watch it too... That usually means they are lying. Most of these guys should let their kids do the movies. They would probably be better. I hope it is true to the original and really does it justice. I wish him luck and hope he doesn't follow the trend of bad flicks.
animeex - 7/3/2009, 5:51 PM
Dragon Ball, the Japanese series had a pretty good story, not original, but a good story. The basic messiah / chosen one story, which is the same as the Avatar, but DB touched on things like human beings taking control of their own destiny etc. I've lost interest in M.Knight, but him saying "underneath that, it’s serious and talks about genocide, balance, our connection to the planet" are all things that the Avatar cartoon series openly deals with, so he's being true to the source material.
Cheesey1 - 7/3/2009, 5:52 PM
Some mvies you can talk about sequels before they come out (transformers,star trek etc..). This movie is not one of those.
superdog - 7/3/2009, 5:53 PM
I have my doubts about this movie but I'm gonna try to be optimistic.
Joker1Zero - 7/3/2009, 5:59 PM
ITS SO UNLIKE HIM, HE'D BE THE LAST MOVIE DIRECTOR YOUD EVER CONSIDER IF YOUR A TRUE AIRBENDER FAN...IM ON THE FENCE WITH THIS ONE, HONESTLLY, I LOVED SIXTH SENSE,LOVED LOVED UNBREAKABLE,THE OTHERS...SO SO..BUT I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT TO THINK OF IT UNTIL I SEE SOME REAL CLIPS, THE COMMERCIAL LOOKS COOL BUT SOMETIMES THEY PUT THE COOLEST STUFF IN THE COMMERCIALS TO DRAW YOU IN..I DUNNO...I DUNNO..
GUNSMITH - 7/3/2009, 7:43 PM
I'm not even a true fan of Avatar I have only seen a few episodes and I'm worried about this movie bombing, I'm just going to keep my expectations low like I did with the first Transformers movie and maybe I'll actually enjoy it.
Osiris - 7/3/2009, 8:09 PM
I'm thinkin this one will turn out alright, the trailer was amazing, and he seems to have a good grasp on the show and everything
davidzuck - 7/3/2009, 8:10 PM
The trailer is absolutely perfect, it looks exactly like the show. I'm excited ^.^
NerdGirl - 7/3/2009, 9:10 PM
Night started well with the 6th sense and then gradually fell the f~ck off!
wards - 7/4/2009, 1:31 AM
I love the show and the trailer looked pretty sick. I think he can do well with this movie. I'm excited to see a live action version of this movie. I hope it doesn't suck...like Eragon ended up sucking, or the first Hulk.
Kajun - 7/4/2009, 2:02 AM
Based on the cartoon(which I never fully watched, but did greatly enjoy for the ones I did) it definitely has my interest piqued. Although I feel the casting is waaay off, they took the Asian flavor out of it (which sometimes it's fine, but not when most of the show is set there). At this point M.Night is more of running gag than a "controversial" director.
As always I'll walk in open minded, and walk out with an empty 5 dollar bucket of what was soda...
Triptheorist - 7/4/2009, 2:35 AM
I just recently started watching episodes with my kids, and I gotta say that I'm very impressed with this series. The last time I was ever into any anime was when I was watching Dragon Ball Z.
I'm actually looking forward to this movie. I can't wait to take my kids to see it; I know they're going to enjoy it for sure, and that's probably going to be the main reason why it will do so well; kind of like "Twilight."
Macksimus - 7/4/2009, 4:32 AM
This is not a Re-Imagination ... it is a Bastardization!
I cannot stand the way this movie was Casted. I feel as if , Even if it is a great movie (Hopefully as good as the Anime) that i will be even more upset because of what it should have been. A great Opportunity to reveal the warrior spirit of the world.
shibazz - 7/4/2009, 9:39 AM
NOW I'M WORRIED.
I just did a 3-day marathon with my nephew (admittedly, my suggestion) and watched EVERY episode of the series.....WOW, it was AWESOME!
What has me so nervous about this film is that it's a special effects NIGHTMARE! Bending comes so naturally to those with the ability that they do it ALL THE TIME! Whether it's passing an innocous object to one another, or fighting in battle, they are constantly using their powers.
Next......APPA! Appa isn't just a means of transportation, he has personality! He is ALWAYS with Ang, and is without a doubt a lead character too!
I have no doubt that M.Night can handle the story, but the effects have me concerned. If he does nail it tho, this could seriously end up as an EPIC trilogy on the scale of ...... dare I say it ........ Lord of the Rings!
The anime is certainly of that caliber, and M.Night has already said he hoped it would be so.......so here's to hoping he can deliver!
Talontd - 7/4/2009, 9:42 AM
I'll give you that SHIBAZZ!
It would've been beautiful (as the anime was) if he would have used people of different races and nations all over the world!
That would've really made it REALLY special!
But I think it still can be great!
Talontd - 7/4/2009, 9:46 AM
I have high expectations for dis.
Bandrews1 - 7/4/2009, 10:47 AM
Well JMAN @ Im all for a Trilogy dude!!! ; )
HAPPY JULY 4th everyone!
LEEE777 - 7/4/2009, 10:57 AM
Shibazz I couldn't agree with you more. The casting of this movie is horrible. I mean come on Jesse McCartney was gonna be Zuko at first. Lame! This movie is gonna suck ace. M. Night's gonna F-bomb it up! This movie is not going to be "Epic" In fact people throw that word around like it's goin out of style. The teaser was big piece of crap and so will this movie. I'm overwhelmingly pissed that the cast isn't asian. When will asian people have their chance to be casted in major roles & to have the entire cast be asian. I can only think of a few american films that do that & it's complete crap. This movie is gonna blow. Bet!
mativ16 - 7/5/2009, 11:14 AM
mativ, I second that!! I watched all of the episodes weren't they ALL supposed to be Asians? Gee I wonder why they got all of these people to play these characters. Zuko, isn't that a Japanese name and some Indian dude is playing him? That's a bit off. I really hate it when stupid directors like this clown doesn't stay true to the material. I wonder how they are going to screw up the Deadpool movie....hmm...no costume like they did with wolverine?
Fearless - 7/5/2009, 6:45 PM
Yo what is all the negativity about this movie I swear people just like to think that things are gonna be bad....the teaser looked amazin the bendin looked spot on and the intimidatin view of the fire nation was on a giant scale this movie is gonna be the best cartoon to live action movie and fearless deadpool only has about 1 costume in the comics and wolverine has a bunch the reason they didn't wear they're costumes in the movies was that they were usin different costume designs from the ultimates story arc
SabretoothTiger - 7/5/2009, 9:04 PM
Yo what's with all the positivity about this movie? Why do people think this movie is gonna be good? The Teaser didn't have any footage that shows what the movies gonna be like except that Aang is white [Roles eyes], That the air temple looks NOTHING like the air temples from the show, and that there is a huge armada of fire nation ships. I'm sick of people being all like "this movie is gonna be epic" That's bull. People were all gun ho about "Dragonball Evolution" & look how much of a piece of crap that was. I'm putting my foot down on this one. I'm saying this movie is gonna blow & like I said before I feel that the ENTIRE cast should have been asian.
mativ16 - 7/5/2009, 9:31 PM
Well mativ what movie of this caliber(fanbase,success already,etc.) has a cast all just one race I know it would be cool if they casted true but to be honest a lot of movies have had huge success even though the castin was way off as far as race and you're just not happy with anythin are ya I bet you hated the lord of the rings, the matrix, 300, and other bad ass movies just cause they didn't look 100% like the original material
SabretoothTiger - 7/5/2009, 10:08 PM
STT What are you talking about? TOTR, The Matrix, & 300 were fine movies. In fact they were awesome. (Well minus the the last 2 matrix movies) I'm fine with a lot of movies. & You are correct in that not all movies are cast with one race and would be cool if they were "casted true". & What do you have to base that those movies didn't look like the original material. I mean 300 looked A LOT like the comic. In fact they had to add all that stuff with the queen cause the movie wouldn't have been long enough, The Matrix was an original idea by the Wachowski brothers, & LOTR, Well that's had art through out the time it was written. But I thought that them bringing in John Howe was a great idea. But what do those movies have to do with this movie? I'm talking about "The Last Airbender" I'm never going to be happy about the casting of this movie. Now if you can come up with "Good" points to sway my opinion that this movie isn't gonna be crap" I will be more then happy to listen and change it if they make decent sense.
mativ16 - 7/5/2009, 10:57 PM
Ok ok you made some good points about those movies I just mentioned them because they've had changes and things altered but were still successes but about this movie I mean what is better than workin and filmin the whole while gettin imput and suggestions from the writers of the show and he's a big fan of the show who has seen all the episodes more than once and granted he hasn't really done action before but most of his movies are way good....and to be fair apart from the castin it looks almost picture perfect to the series I haven't seen everythin about the movie but I mean its lookin a lot better than any movie I've seen made from a cartoon
SabretoothTiger - 7/5/2009, 11:11 PM
I'm cool with people loving it already, I'm just not gonna be one of them. The show is AWESOME! & I really think that the movie is gonna blow. Shamaylan(sp) did good with 6th sense and unbreakable. I think after that it went down hill. I think that his title off good writer/director is over. & the creator's are cool with everything cause they wanna get paid. I'd sell out in a heart beat too if there was tons of money involved. As for him being a fan. I totally question that. I really don't think he's going to keep the "flavor" the show had. I mean as far as the look goes, The only thing I enjoyed was the the look of the fire nation ships. But I'm still a little fuzzy on if they were even cool. I'm not sure about the tv cartoon to live action movie, That this one is the best. I mean I'm sure a lot of people would say transformers is better (I'm not saying I do, I'm just saying). Wait till the next trailer I'm sure it will show more, And prove how much this movie is gonna be lame.
mativ16 - 7/5/2009, 11:29 PM
Grif, no one likes you.
saymekian - 7/6/2009, 7:49 AM
Unless he changes the story completely the movie shuold be great. I'm probably the biggest avatar fan here. The movie writes itself. There is actually three chapters to the story which are water, earth, and fire. Each capter can make it's own story. The show was so good it really didn't have to end. They could of made tons of new shows.
Crusader - 7/6/2009, 3:59 PM
crusader I doubt very highly your the biggest avatar fan here. You just stated facts any ass wad whose ever heard of avatar could tell you. Plus have you ever read shibazz's thoughts. My votes with her/him.
mativ16 - 7/6/2009, 4:11 PM
So...uh....what's the difference between James Cameron's Avatar and M Night's? Not talkin smack but I been hearing about jame's Cameron's for a couple years now, and all of a sudden i see a trailer for M Night's at Transformers....Who is doing what?
WulfComicFan - 7/6/2009, 4:31 PM
First off Crusader .... if you were the biggest fan on here then you would understand that Avatar had to end . The fact that the story had a beginning and a real end was part of why it was soooooo UNIQUE! I mean this Anime had it all. It covered every continent and almost all the people of the Earth. Did you notice how the Water Bending Tribes were either Inuit or South American Swampy HillBillies. The point is the reasons that it was damned near perfect was because it hit on every point. Not just some points. I dont even know what to say to this. I am Just thankful that Mative16 held down the Hut on this one.
@Mativ16-I guess that i am sooooo stunned by the lack of foresight on M. Knights part that i am left feeling kinda numb over this. To be honest i would rather see this as a Live Action TV Series than let this dumb ass lose sight of its incredibly unique and wonderfully inspiring kick ass story. Just Imagine if i had Directed it and made all the main characters Native American instead of stead of Chinese like he did with the Hindu Fire Nation.. This Anime has it all and this movie is already lacking. Heres to hoping nothing else changes and the movie is good too.
shibazz - 7/6/2009, 9:48 PM
@Shibazz- Your totally right. I really wish they would have done the show justice by making a movie that reflected it's uniqueness. & Your idea about a live action series is a really good idea. I just know that this movie will suck. I can feel it. Dragonball evolution was my last straw. I had high hopes but that movie sucked ace. I'm totally being pessimistic on this one.
mativ16 - 7/7/2009, 8:58 AM
they would have to make this a trilogy since the saga is long. im not like a huge fan of it but i'd watch the series off and on and even watched the finale. i recently saw the trailer for it and it looked good.
odie00 - 7/11/2009, 11:23 PM
does anyone know how i can get in touch with Ming? i would really love a print of that beautiful fan art
smarie33 - 7/31/2009, 11:55 AM
well I'll admit that I loved some of his earlier movies but lets face it the last couple of movies sucked ass. All I know is that I'm an AVATAR fan so he better not mess this up cuz I don't want what happend to DragonBall Z and Crystal Skull... oh.... that was heart breaking...
