Kenneth Branagh Speaks On the Look Of Asgard In THOR & Avoiding Cheesiness

Director of Marvel's highly anticipated THOR speaks with 'Film School Rejects' on the look of the film & Asgard overall. And also speaks on avoiding being cheesy.

News regarding Marvel's much anticipated adaption of the Mighty Avenger THOR, has been dull with the studio now focused on shooting Captain America. And while the film is still in the late editing & 3D conversion stage, director Kenneth Branagh recently sat down with Jack Giroux of Film School Reject, where he discusses look & tone of the film, Asgard, and also avoiding what many fans fear: cheesiness.

“Tone was always a key issue. Key people early on… obviously the production designer Bo Welch and the Academy Award-winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne was also someone trying to be inspired by the comic book, but also seek it as being as imaginative about it [as possible] and [to] present textures and elements. You know, when people travel through space they live in a world with gods.”

"We were always trying to look at it and see what you saw in the comic and try to re-imagine it. [It was] going back to the original source, and that got everybody excited. You want to try to be pure and classical with it, but bring a new twist.”

“[With] the production we wanted a mammoth quality Asgard with having monumental buildings. If you walk around the city of Rome and you look up at any street corner there’s just an emissivity that would have kept people visiting that place in ancient Rome bored.”

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, and Natalie Portman, THOR storms into theaters May 6, next year in 3D!

This movie will be a true epic and I for one cant wait! I was a little confused when I first read that Branagh would be directing, but the more he says the more I see why Marvel are making the best CBM's ever as they clearly know what they're doing...as that beautiful Thor Comic Con trailer proved!

I'm not so sure about this movie anymore. I've got a feeling it could turn out really wrong. But i remain optimistic.
It's funny the more time passes by the more I'm excited for GREEN LANTERN. For Thor I'm not so sure.

When ASGARD shows up on screen in 3D, my boner will be just as massive as those structures Kenneth is saying. It will be so glorious!

Can't wait for this one. I get the feeling that Thor will be the best Marvel movie 'cause Kenneth Branagh's the man! That and Hopkins.

sounds good if more filmmakers would watch out for the cheesyness and stop adding nonstop action, and 3d slow motion we would have better films, and make them more grounded in reality, and focus on story rather than effects first hand. dont get me wrong effects are great but only when needed.sometimes simple is better.

No big shocker there! I have seen the pics. I have seen the trailer, but I have YET to see one single thing that I would call cheesy.

Yup Thor is pure CLASS all the way!!

Branagh did a great job, you can see how epic Asgard looks in the comic-con footage

I read Poni was taking heat for snooping around the Green Lantern set. They were all over him here at CBM, so that's probably why we haven't seen him around lately. Hopefully he'll be back.

And as for Thor, I can't wait to see it and Captain America next year, as well as Green Lantern. And have no fear, Joss Whedon is going to ROCK the Avengers movie!

The only costume I think looks kind of werid is this.

I think maybe it's just too much gold.

Everything else looks decent, but I'm not sold on the movie yet.

@Josh

Couldn't agree more! That comic-con footage was AWESOME, i believe in Branaugh!!!

flames809 - 9/7/2010, 6:32 PM
movie looks good. but you never know it can have critics talking bad about it and it can probably bomb so you cant really say it will be epic.

With Branaugh's skill as an actor (often classical) I knew Marvel had knocked this one out of the park with the quality of the storytelling, I was a little worried about the quality of his work on the action until the SDCC footage aired. He and everyone else involved have NAILED this one so far! With more information coming out about Captain America and Green Lantern all the time, it's one hell of an exciting time to be a fan of comics and movies about them!

BIGBMH: I have to agree that's not to most flattering image of Idris Elba as Heimdall, but that's not much of a complaint for me. I think the audience will get a better look at him during the movie.
