Lee Pace And Michael Rooker Discuss James Gunn And Their GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Roles

While 'Yondu' Michael Rooker explains that Guardians of the Galaxy has always felt "like a James Gunn movie," 'Ronan the Accuser' actor Lee Pace praises the director for allowing him to really "go there."

After playing the Elvenking Thranduil in The Hobbit trilogy back-to-back, actor Lee Pace was in store for something quite different when he signed on for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy playing the primary villain, Ronan the Accuser, who's a Kree leader and Thanos employee. “The characters couldn't be more different!” he told SciFiNow magazine recently. “I remember walking on set [of Guardians of the Galaxy], and I was like 'Very un-elfy, right guys?'” Pace said. “[Ronan] is a real psychopathic beast. I'm having the best time playing it. I kept looking over at James Gunn when we were shooting, 'Too much? Should I pull back?' He's like 'No, more, go for it!'”

Also joining the ranks of the villains (or antiheros) in Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the first few actors to join the film, Michael Rooker, who's playing the Centaurian game hunter Yondu Udonta.
“It's felt like a James Gunn movie as soon as he called me about it! I went out and bagged a comic just to see what he was doing, and I was like 'Oh my God, he's doing this!'” he says of his longtime friend & frequent collaborator. “I was very happy because he's a big comic guy, even as a young child he really enjoyed reading them, so it was great to see him doing something that really got his creative energy going.” As for why the director chose him for the role, Rooker says “He loves to torture me and make me look strange. Directors always love to tell actors what to do, and he loves telling me what to do, and that's why he hired me!” Coincidentally, James Gunn was asked moments ago on his Spring.me if he already had The Walking Dead actor in mind when he wrote the Yondu character. “Yes, I wrote the role specifically for Rooker,” the director replied. What do you think?

UPDATE: It appears the Spring.me account that's mentioned above is not James Gunn's, but actually a faux. Therefore, disregard that last quote about Yondu being written for Michael Rooker.

UPDATE #2: Now you can disregard the above update as James Gunn has taken to his official Spring.me to confirm that he in fact “wrote the Yondu role specifically for Michael Rooker.”

“Guardians of the Galaxy,” the next epic adventure from Marvel Studios, is directed by James Gunn from his screenplay, with a story by Nicole Perlman and Gunn, and the film will introduce audiences to a whole new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The all-star cast includes Chris Pratt as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, two-time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Academy Award® winner Benicio del Toro as The Collector, Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey, and six-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close as Nova Prime, with Vin Diesal as Groot and Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” is scheduled for release August 1, 2014!

James is an oddball. The epitome of hit or miss. I'm excited to see this, but I really doubt any of the cast has real chemistry and... I don't know, we'll see.

Can't wait for this movie. The only psychopath villain Marvel has had so far was Emil Blonsky; would love to see more.

@0mega "Nice to hear Pace was able to go all out in the role, but I hope that they don't go overboard with Ronan. He's supposed to be a ruthless badass, but not an all out psycho"

I agree. In fact that's really the ONLY thing I'm worried about this movie. Loving all this GOTG news that we've been getting lately.

"Obviously, since we already know that Ronan will eventually end up not being the one that killed Drax's family"

lol, again I agree. Once I saw read what Drax storyline was, I know that Marvel didn't really change it and Thanos will be truly responsible.

I hope that toy description a few weeks back was right and we see a fight between Drax & Thanos

@ATrueHero

That fight would be sick! and I hope Thanos kicks his ass. What I'm most afraid of is Thanos being downplayed, if they treat him like Bendis did in Avengers Assemble then I'll be very very disappointed.

@Omega

Hopefully he won't take an ENTIRE season off and say he's "the best player in the league" then perform "OK" for 10 games and get injured again and then rinse and repeat. I hope Kobe is still good gosh darnit.

This is most disconcerting.

After seeing the look and feel of the mid credits scene in Thor TDW, I hope they make it so that it fits the already feel and look of the res of the MCU, I hope people know what im trying to say here. It did look kind of off but Ill hold my judgement till the movie comes out.

This is great news. I'm really hyped to see Rooker in the role since he's actually read the original Guardians of the Galaxy. For Lee Pace i'm intrigued to see what the actor can bring to the table as he plays Ronan the Acuser.

OMEGA-this is great news,i do hope that they keep the ronan angle, the whole he does things for the good of the kree empire,but i they have to change around things for the good of what story they wanna tell, Lee pace has said " he is a complicated kree" so hopefully he has some depth to him,i think he means that ronan is aggressive and brutal,both in combat and his demeanor,i think they are just really passionate about what they shot and what it to turn out good,all of them keep saying that james gunn is the right man for this job and they trust him completely and james gunn is know to be avery specific guy, he wants his story,characters etc, to be a specific way, they way he sees fit so hopefully it will turn out great,pace was a weird choice for ronan,but then again who would have thought andy from parks and rec would be star lord, glenn close would be the leader of the nova corps etc, this film has been filled witha weird cast and i really hope this pays off.

Omegadagod-haha,yeah its weird but lee pace is a really good actor,james said that he audtioned for the role of tar lord but he didnt feel he was right, but he thought he could play ronan and then he audtioned him for that and he landed the role

Alex-im nervous too and i think the trailer will be good, lets just hope the movie delivers
ezio619
ezio619 - 11/23/2013, 9:05 PM
Alex-they recognize this is arisk,fiege has said he knew the reaction to the midcredits scene would be"what the hell is this" and they recognize the silliness of this so yeah,james gunn has said,he wants the characters to be there, he wants to create a world that is unique and out there but it is grounded with the characters that we can relate to
ezio619
ezio619 - 11/23/2013, 9:26 PM
Alexander-well it has thanos as the"emperor" of this franchise, the mastermind pulling the strings so it will fit into that story, it is supposed to be 95% percent in space,feige has ssaid so it might not tie in with the the heroes on earth or the events going on there,which makes sense because they have to set up this character
