Was the Green Lantern Ring Design Changed for the Upcoming Movie?

Images circulating the net have many fans wondering why Hal Jordan's ring doesn't look like the comic book version; was this design changed solely for the film?

Over the past several months, we've seen images that allude to a change in the ring design being used for Martin Capbell's Green Lantern film. The first being the revamped Lantern logo, which has a bejeweled center with a textured, metallic surrounding. The second being the newly revealed promotional artwork from Warner Bros. Consumer Products division; a homage to the popular Green Lantern comic cover pose.

This design has divided fans evenly. There are those who like the movie version of the ring and feel it will translate well to film; while others consider it a design failure that doesn't respect the source material, pointing out it's similarity to Green Lantern Kyle Rayner's ring or the Corps Honor Guard as apposed to the rounded-ring Hal Jordan wears in the modern comics. Though the ring may be "new" to some fans' eyes, it most definitely is not new to Green Lantern comics. As a matter of fact, that design is over 20 years old!

Below you'll find images, courtesy of SHH poster Mondragon, that reveal the origin of the movie ring. It appears the production designers dug into the archives to use the Neal Adams/Mike Grell comics run from the mid-1970s as a basis for Hal Jordan's intergalactic weapon:

Now that we know the ring is in fact actually based on Green Lantern mythology, and not some designer's unique experiment, fans should have a bit more hope that the studio has done their research.

MPP - Personally, I very much like the ring's look, at least from what we've seen. It can't look like something you can pick up at a flea market, so giving it an odd shape with an ancient feel is definitely a good thing.

Oh, and in case you were wondering if WBCP President Brad Globe was wearing a ring replica from the film in the License Magazine advertisement; it doesn't appear so. More than likely it is one of the rings from the Blackest Night Ring Spectrum Set, which not only light up, but will became available for purchase this July.

I didn't initially care for the symbol that much, but on a ring, it actually looks pretty nice. I think it translates well and I am glad they did their homework for the design.

As far as those light up spectrum rings, those are bloody awesome and I would very much like to get one (or all). Who volunteers to be the first to buy one for me? :)

The ring in itself isn't an issue to me. Just as long as it doesn't look like it came from a Shreddies box as a marketing gimmick to get you to buy the shitty tasting cereal in the first place.

The chest logo and costume on the other hand has more pull in regards to my attention.

I am kinda neutral to the whole ring subject. But if they did Hal Jordans "modern" ring in the comics it would look flat, like plastic. It needs to feel and seem epic. It is after all a source of terrible power and possibilites; a technological achievment far beyond everything else in existence. It needs to look kinda updated. Batman couldnt run around in a 60's spandex suit forever, the same for Hal Jordans ring and suit(CGI is MADE for this movie!). The ring looks good. It looks alien, cold and heavy, just like an object of such grandeur should!

Beware my power! - Coming 2011 - Marvel, look the f*** out!

Why change something as simplistic as the ring? That is crazy! Keep it together WB!!!!!

@MPP: So the ring coming out July, will they be available only online, or comicbook stores, or will they be available everywhere?

Sithsidious66- Superman's lame: without the sun he's helpless. So is Spiderman: without the spider bite he's helpless. The whole thing that makes him interesting is that GL is chosen by the ring. Other superheroes are just lucky and do the right thing. (Batman included; he's loaded.) That doesn't diminish any of them, but makes him unique and interesting.

The ring could have looked like cheap green plastic, so that will do fine. I just want to see how it's used.

The ring seems fine but as my friend always says... Someone has to piss THEIR own scent over everything.

hey, sithsidious... the reason gl people like the character is that he ISN'T a "superhero..." he's a cop. he's a hard-working, well-trained, well-equipped law enforcement professional. and his lack of organic power is PRECISELY the appeal... in a sea of cosmic ray idiocy, inexplicably levitating bodybuilders from krypton, and asinine random mutations (hey everyone, i just randomly popped out a blue-skinned black-eyed two-toed devil-tailed teleporting baby... gee whiz!) GL is the only guy that didn't get powers from something completely retarded and nonsensical. yes the ring has been portrayed in a silly way sometimes, but the "alien technology" angle covers pretty much all the bases without resorting to whimsy and contrivance.

and sorry, but i for one grew up reading adams & grell and ALWAYS liked this bold, chunky, solid ring design, as opposed to the chintzy little disk that looked like it came from the pediatrician's treasure chest. i ESPECIALLY like the focusing lens which always seemed to make a lot of sense to me. and btw, that makes the design not 20 years old but more like 30 or 35! i know cb fans are pretty rigid, but you guys gotta give up on this one. that ring is awesome.

@ AlternateNo4
Completely retarded and non-sensical? I, for one, think that genetic mutations aren't as whimsical as having energy displaying alien technology around your finger.

Nicely put @AlternateNo4
to add to what you were saying, Tony Stark is nothing without his suit, yet Iron Man is a cool concept for a superhero.
Regarding the ring design, I kind of like the concept, with the bejeweled center & texture. Looks like a powerful ancient artifact.

@DeadDrool
well the "retarded and nonsensical" line was aimed more toward silliness like superman and the fantastic four. but yes, i think even the mutations went way too far... sure i can deal with wolverine's super healing or xavier's telepathy, or evolutionary quirks like angel and beast... even rogue or kitty. but colossus? nightcrawler? STORM? like... seriously? a mutation that enables you to conjure a blizzard in august? how is that GENETIC? sorry, but the mutation thingy quickly turned into marvel's carte blanche... a blanket excuse to throw in anything they could think of. laser eyes? mutation. shapeshifting? mutation. incredible luck throwing PLAYING CARDS? mutation. all due respect but... gimme a break.

I didn't like the look of the ring from the pic on the right side of the top-most picture, but in the promo art it looks awesome IMO.

@interesting john
I LOVE THE POWERS! im not questioning POWERS or anything like that! but even WITH a suspension of disbelief, i find it insulting when origin stories fail to make a reasonable effort to explain stuff. when superman started out he was FINE... but THEN he was given flight, which was iffy. then flight turned into an ability to hover, float, drift gently through the air, etc... with NO explanation. as for the the xmen... like i said it was cool at first, but when the mutations became extreme, they strained the cover story. nightcrawler would have been awesome as an alien, a demon, a CHUD, or whatever. just not as a mutant.

"Dug into the archives" my ass.

It's not really a problem for me that they went with a Rayner design, but they made it look like chipped metal, and cracked stone, and ancient and all that nonsense. How easy is it to look at a comic book and see what a ring looks like, without changing it for "movie adaptation" reasons or whatever it is they're peddling.
