Matt Cavenaugh Takes Flight as Superman

In an interview with Quickdfw.com, actor Matt Cavenaugh discusses what it's like to play the Man of Steel in the Dallas Theater Center's revamped version of the musical It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman.

What follows is an excerpt from that interview:

Q: With so much experience in New York, what made you want to drop everything and do a show in Dallas?

Cavenaugh: They asked me to do the reading back in January and February, and I thought playing Superman and Clark Kent would be fun. I didn't know the original '66 show – well, I knew a couple of songs, but I certainly didn't know the book or the story. But it was encouraging to see the work that went into the new version. Some things are cut and gone, there are some new songs, there's an entirely new book. It's really a new musical that we're doing. I loved the tone and the great work that [writer] Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] had done. I also love the time period. For some reason, I do really well with that '30s and '40s thing.

Q: Does Superman dance in this thing?

Cavenaugh: Superman doesn't necessarily dance, although I do think he will have some impressive aerial moves. Flying fight scenes, maybe. We'll see how Crouching Tiger we can get.

Q: So they haven't strung you up yet in rehearsals?

Cavenaugh: No, that's coming up. And I've never flown before, so it'll be a lot of fun.

Q: Is there a good way to prepare for personal flight?

Cavenaugh: You kind of just do it. A lot of sit-ups, I guess. [Laughs.] Make sure the harness is strapped on well.

Q: What about the suit? Tried it on yet?

Cavenaugh: I had my first fitting recently. They've built a beautiful '30s suit for Clark Kent. And I put on the mock-up Superman suit, too. It was exciting, and also like, "What the hell have I gotten myself into?" [Laughs.] It's like I was 7 years old again and running around in my Underoos. But I am looking forward to wearing the suit. I think the first time Superman flies in will be cool. And it will be exciting to do it here, at this new theater.

Q: Do the lines for Clark and Superman require you to get into different moods?

Cavenaugh: We are still putting the whole thing together, so I'm starting to realize where these personas come from. With Superman, there's an inner confidence. And it's not to say he's cocky or egotistical. But I think Superman has that. And we all have our public selves and our private selves. I know I have those, and it's fun to play on that in my work.

Q: What would your personal superpower be if you could create one?

Cavenaugh: Hmm ... well, I've always, in my family, been the one that my younger siblings have come to for problem-solving. They've leaned on me. So I guess my power would be ...

Q: A magic tool belt?

Cavenaugh: Exactly. A magic tool belt. [Laughs.]

I guess if I have to hear the broken record of Cavill and Bomer for Supes I will keep up the broken record from my end. ;-) No wimpy boys Cavill and Bomer playing the role Superman! I want a Supes with some machismo!

I'm tired of everyone suggesting these whimpy emo 'Calin Klein underwear model' wannabes. I say John Barrowman for Clark Kent/Superman!

He’s got the look… He’s got the frame... And MOST importantly, he’s got the TALENT!

I like to play the fan cast game with my friends where any actor from any era can be cast. I always thought Tom Selleck (minus mustache) would have made a great Superman.

loganoneil@ As much as I loved Barrowman in Torchwood, I have to disagree with you. As tough as he can come across, he still has that wimpy, feminine side that comes across on screen. He is barely 6 foot tall, so I don't think that is having the frame that is needed for Superman. He would also need to firm up and pack on a little more bulk from where he is right now...which is doable. Hell, I am 6'1" and 220 lbs and I would never consider myself as having the physical size to play Superman. I guess that is why I have a hard time with Bomer, Cavill and Barrowman. They all are lacking the machismo and are all small for what I would like to see in Supes. Just my opinion.

@Tankgirl - You're a hottie with great legs(avatar), but No. I've been telling Leee777 the same thing over and over and over That Henry Cavill is the wrong choice for Superman. Let's Keep Superman looking like Superman.

Shazam@ The last thing I want is for them to cast Superman based on Reeves. I am one who did not care for Reeves as Superman, for the same reason I don't want Cavill, Bomer or Barrowman for the part. I am hoping that there is some unknown out there that that has the physical stature, look and strong personality to play the Man of Steel.

@Ranger14 - I grew up with Reeves and he will always be Superman to me. If they are going to reboot the franchise then I hope they do find someone suitable. I just hope they don't make a mistake like Routh. He looked to much like a football Jock. Who do you think is kind of a good fit for the Man of Steel??

Shazam, I grew up with Reeves as Superman as well and most people associate him as Superman because that is all they know. In the mid 80's to 1991, I taught television and film acting and was involved in the industry so I was perhaps a little more critical and privy to inside information as to actors that affected my opinion on certain roles. Certain things jumped out at me that may have not affected the casual viewer as much.

To be honest, I am not sure who I would like to see as Superman. I am hoping there is a strong, unknown that has the physical stature and look to play the part. Considering we have Chris Hemsorth as Thor, I would like to see someone with a physical stature close to him. Though we would never see them on the same screen together, Superman should not look wimpy next to Thor. The names being discussed here are all too wimpy and small. Perhaps I will take some time and research some unknowns and see if I can come up with someone.

Okay, this is just off of some quick looking around and this guy has only a little tv and film experience with a strong theater education. 6'2" 1/2 and strong chin. His eyebrows can be thinned out some. Not saying he is the one I would pick, but could be a viable unknown option. Harmon Walsh

@Ranger14 - Sorry, man. He looks like a Jock from when I was in High school, LOL.
I think Victor Webster is the perfect Fit. You really can't determine his ethnicity. Which is perfect, since he's a Illegal Alien. LMAO!!!! But seriously He's 6'4 and he's got the build and the look for Superman. IMO. ; )

Oh and @LEEE777, Give it up dude. Never gonna happen. LOL

Ranger14 - 6/17/2010, 5:43 PM
Shazam@ Actually, Webster looks a lot like a jock I knew from high school! ;-) Superman strikes me as having the jock look when he doesn't have his glasses on. That being said, I have always liked Webster for the role. I think he is pushing the upper age range for me, but definitely miles better than the sissy boy picture that Lee just posted. :-P

Ranger - I beg to differ about your assessment of Barrowman. 'Whimpy' or 'effeminate' could also be interpreted as 'sensitive' and 'caring' - two traits ESSENTIAL in a well-rounds and BELIEVABLE Clark Kent. That's a HELL of a lot better than the 'dorky' or 'nerdy' direction the last movie went. As you were a former acting teacher, I'm sure you would agree that in order to make a truly successful Superman film, BOTH the Kal-El and Clark Kent aspects of the character HAVE to be developed and fleshed out believably... and EQUALLY! Having an earth-bound god running around pretending to be Tobey McGuire's Peter Parker may have worked 40 years ago, but times have changed and ALL sides of a character MUST be fully three-dimensional in order for a film to work nowadays. Nolan's Batman interpretation has all but proven that! I believe Barrowman has the goods to bring to the big-screen not only a good-and-proper Superman, but a truly BELIEVABLE Clark Kent as well.

And I hate to say it, but Walsh looks like a throw-back to those chessy 'Looking Good' models I used to see hanging from girls lockers back in the 80's. That and he's a couple hairs short of a uni-brow!

Speaking of high school ('YES', I can remember that far back - LMAO!), LEEE - Cavil just reminds me of a dork I used to shove into lockers because he was just an annoying little pr!ck. What was that kid's name...? Oh yeah - Vince Vaughn!

Ranger14 - 6/18/2010, 3:06 PM
loganoneil@ A good actor can be be sensitive and caring without coming across as "feminine" or "gay". From what I have seen of Barrowman's acting he would have a hard time keeping his feminine side at bay. Feminine mannerisms are difficult for actors to hide who happen to be more feminine. Kind of the same as Sam Worthington hiding his accent. It always seems to show up somewhere throughout a film. Superman is one character I don't want to see feminine characteristics showing up on screen. I'm fine with Superman being caring and sensitive. I am not fine with him coming across as being "light in the loafers".
