UPDATE COMICS: Largest Bookstore Barnes & Noble Removes All DC Comics from Shelves

DC Comics plan to release 100 titles exclusively on the Amazon Kindle has backfired as Barnes & Nobles, owner of the Nook are furious and yanked all offending comics.

UPDATE! - I went down to the local Barnes & Noble to inquire about the issue. During the conversation, it came up that this location, and possibly others, were also pulling Marvel comics from their shelves. I don't know how wide spread this will be but felt it was relevant enough to inform you. AraxisHT

Breathe slow and steady comic book fans, you'll still be able to order the titles through the company's website. But as for the store, you can't even order a copy, unless you have it sent to your home for delivery. And if you want to bring a copy of one of the offending titles into the store, you will be asked to leave.

Barnes & Nobles clearly feels they have the power in this relationship. Their competitor, Borders, went out of business. But what also is clear is that they don't have a foothold in the E-reader market. DC Comics decision to grant exclusivity to Amazon's Kindle, and ignore Barnes & Nobles' Nook has to be infuriating.

After the announcement last week that the upcoming Kindle Fire tablet will come with one hundred DC Comics’ backlist titles of comic books and graphic novels pre-installed, Barnes & Noble pulled all of the print editions of every title off its store shelves. There has been some speculation about the length of time this near-boycott will take place, as well as rumors about some of the motivation behind the move.

“We will not stock physical books in our stores if we are not offered the available digital format,” chief merchant for B&N Jaime Carey said in a statement. “To sell and promote the physical book in our store showrooms and not have the ebook available for sale would undermine our promise to Barnes & Noble customers to make available any book, anywhere, anytime.”

While there has been talk that the digital deal with Amazon is set only for a four-month time period beginning with the Kindle Fire’s launch, and while Barnes&Noble has only pulled the book from physical locations as opposed to removing it from its website and special orders catalogs, the end result is that digital DC Comics‘ fans will have to get these titles through Amazon, remembering that an iOS device with the free Kindle app will also pick up those titles from the Kindle Store.

DC COMICS RESPONSE

“We are disappointed that Barnes & Noble has made the decision to remove these books off their shelves and make them unavailable to their customers. DC Entertainment will continue to make our content available to our fans and new readers through multiple distribution channels including locally-owned comic book retailers, independent bookstores, other bookstore chains and other widespread means such as online through Amazon and through our apps on iOS and select Android powered devices as well as new and exciting devices going forward.”

Both DC and Marvels sales would increase at an unbelievable rate and they would once again snare new readers if they would stop distributing exclusively through comic and book stores. Place comics back on the revolving comic rack in every convenience, grocery and general store in the country where every child makes frequent visits with their mother every week, as opposed to "specialty" stores that don't even exist in many small towns.

"Not having the ebook available for sale would undermine our promise to Barnes & Noble customers to make available any book, anywhere, anytime.”

So to counter this you're going to remove them altogether, thus making them unavailable from you at all... and thus most likely driving MORE sales to amazon... well done.

barnes and noble will be out of business soon anyway, bookstores are dying period and i would imagine comic sales at places like that are minimal.

this does raise an interesting question for comic books -- how to gain access to wider markets. for me the digital thing will never work, it would be like having the coffee table art books i have on my kindle. no way. but sometimes i go in to the one comic shop we have in town and they are out of a title, with only a 50/50 shot they will reissue the thing as they don't overstock anymore.

access is shrinking all over the place.

@Hawks yeah, completely, one-hundred percent agree with you.
That should've been the plan with the new 52 all along. Foolish corporations with their partnerships and politics. They should also invest in billboards and live appearances. Besides the online community, who knew about the new 52? I talk comics all the time at work and get people excited, only to have them confused when I explain what the new 52 is. I mean, who remembers when you would drive down a freeway and say a "Death of Superman" billboard and got excited?

I read a while back that Barnes and Noble was planning to stop selling comics anyways. No one buys it from them.

DC did this to themselves. I don't blame B&N one bit for throwing their weight around to make their point. DC will come crawling back with a sweet deal for B&N. I'm a DC fan and B&N customer (now that Borders is gone), and I'm with B&N on this one.

I just saw B&N on a list of companies most likely to go bankrupt next. We may not really care in a few months.

Exactly. You really thing B&N would remove comics if it would really hurt their income? C'mon, man...

@Superguy besides reading both companies, I'm more of a DC guy, but, I gotta say this: relaunching a whole universe, of course DC would sell more.

The trick is, keep selling. And the way the stories were, I doubt that will happen...

B&N is just trying to make a point and in doing so it looks like they're throwing a temper-tantrum.

You can't buy the Harry Potter books digitally from B&N and their Nook doesn't support the format. But do you see them threatening to remove ALL Harry Potter books from their shelves? No.

B&N is trying to assert their power over the book world now that Borders is out of the picture, so they're picking on a little guy (and DC IS little compared to most publishers and certainly compared to Harry Potter.)

Well, Screw You, B&N. It's cheaper on Amazon anyway.

I hope this doesn't continue. I love Barns and Nobles. Why doesn't DC just give thmem the oppurtunity to sell them digitally. I never buy from Amazon, so I'm dissapointed.
