What's been great about this season...IMO
Okay, I submit that I drone on about this show A LOT...but will always maintain it's underrated. And I acknowledge that many of you on this site HATE the show, and I can understand how many of you see it as a Superman hack...so now that our cards are on the table let's move on.
I never much liked Supes UNTIL I started watching this show, because suddenly then, Clark Kent became someone who many people, including myself, could empathize with. In the various incarnations of Superman, you never really got to see him struggle with being an adolecent, or honing his powers. Therefore this was unique, and was helped along with brilliant reimaginings (Lex as a childhood friend) and cutting edge special effects (as far as TV).
I never thought the show would run THIS LONG and I once heard the best critique regarding the series: it's worst enemey has always been it's own success. In other words it's gone on and on, yet is now far beyond the point at which Clark should have become Superman, so it seems like it is somewhat stagnet. Were it not for the desire on the part of WB to create a movie-version eventually (that doesn't suck), and if it wasn't for the fact that viewers know HOW GOOD special effects CAN BE and wont settle for anything less-this show would have become "Superman: The series" years ago. It would be quite easy because Welling doesn't seem to mind playing the character and doesn't seem to purusue work beyond that of the series. I'm sure this is because he has made a great living and can appreciate what he already has.
Ironically, this has produced an unintended plot twist where Clark's journey to Superman is not a direct one...he doesn't simply say "Shit...let me put on blue spandex, wrangle up a cape and go kick ass and save kittens in trees..." it's like the idea doesn't quite cross his mind.
Also, seeing Clark interact with other heroes like the JLA and Legion is pretty cool, ESPECIALLY since they more or less view him as what he CAN BE, not as the super-powered force he is in the comics. They almost look at him like the ugly girl who will soon turn into a hottie, even if she doesn't know it.
Last season I was terribly disappointed with the Doomsday crap, even though I thought he did look cool. But THIS season two awesome things have happened that have made me enjoy the show yet again...
1) He IS wearing a suit...even if it is a variation, it has the "S" and it's great to see Clark finally get THAT MUCH CLOSER. Whenever anything goes down, he dresses for the part. It's great even if it's not ideal, and even if people still call him "Blur" which makes sense but I hate.
2) Dude...Lois and Clark FINALLY got together. After YEARS of Lana making everything SUCK with her crappiness, Lois was brought onto the show. Part bad girl, part sweet heart, it seemed like she instantly fell for Clark, though she considers him to be a dork. She's self assured and light-hearted, unlike Lana who was always bogged down in her own drama.
Lois appreciates Clark in a way Lana didn't and the two have amazing chemistry. And it's freaking continuity!! So at the end of the last episode, I walked away satisfied for the first time in a long time, because something concrete had happened...a real step forward. Plus, I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for love stories, especially the ones with self-sacraficing superheroes in the middle of them, because just as they bring that selflessness and disregard for themselves into their fights and adventures, the ones like Clark or Peter Parker bring into relationships where their own happiness is second to that of their woman...and I think in some way, that's how all us guys would LIKE to be.
That said, my only fear now is that the creators will dick around with that story line and have them break up, then get back together, and back and forth. That got old fast with Lana and I hope they just let them remain together and not try to pull a 90210.
So there you guys have it. You can take a piss out of me for praising something you hate, and those of you on my side can agree with me that finally being a fan is paying off in some small, but significant way.
