Power to the People

This is a semi-intelligent rant, but I would like to know if any of you think there is a good idea hidden in all the frustration.
The World's Finest. Batman and Superman. Why is it so hard to figure out what WB is doing with these franchises. Why are they so coy? Is it that hard to give the public a straight answer?

The Chairman/CEO of WB is a man named Barry M. Meyer. I can find no contact information for this man. I would like to ask him a few things about the Superman franchise, and a few about Batman.

1. Why did you make "Superman Returns"? Did you not read the script? Did you have some chimapzee's read it for you and give you their opinion? Or did you have a group of coke heads read it for you and tell you it was gonna be awesome?

2. What's taking so long for a sequel to be made? Or to reboot the franchise? Do you not realize that after the last movie, you could literally make a movie with Supes flying around, suspended in the air by HIGHLY VISIBLE CHORDS, and as long as he FIGHTS someone, it would be superior to SR? Do you realize the bar is set THAT LOW?

3. What are your feelings on "Smallville"? Do you realize that it has a loyal fan-following and if you upped the budget a bit, it could be even better? Have you ever watched it? Why did you give it such a shit time-slot?

4. Would you make a Smallville big screen movie?

5. What the [frick] is happening with "Batman"? There are so many reports floating around Hollywood and the internet that make a very simple question seem so complex. Is the Nolan Crew coming back and if so when can we expect another installment?

The point of this article is this...these simple questions are on a lot of people's minds (cept for those of you who hate SV). We hear contradicting reports from everyone about this shit. We hear varying things from Gary Oldman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Johnny Depp, James McTiegue, Brandon Routhe, Kevin Spacey, Brian Singer...but why? Why can't we get one straight answer? I would really call this guy if I could just get his number because I think it would be cathardic. And anyone who wants to break my balls about letting it bother me so much may feel free. But to me, this is like having the NFL on strike or something. I like consistency. I like to know what's happening.

Iron Man for instance, has a sequel coming out in 7 months. We've seen footage, we get twitters, we know that RDJ is signed on for a few more. "Thor" is cranking out news everyday, actors, locals, all that good stuff. Why cant a few simple questions be answered by WB? Why are they so ass backwards?! Does anyone else get frustrated by this crap besides me?

Probably not to the same degree as you but it is frustrating. You're right about Smallille though, on top of what you said it has brought with it many non comic book fans. So a series which greatly expands the fanbase should get more attention from the studio as that fanbase would probably go to see a Superman movie.

Im guessing WB have indeed watched Snoreville which should answer the question about a movie lol

Good article...reboot Superman already :)

I have to believe future Superman movie plans will include Tom Welling and Erica Durance. Execs at WB and DC cannot be so blind to the success Smallville has had over the past decade. We need a good Superman movie!!

you wanna know the reason why people won't give us fans a straight answer about most dc movies?
well here goes:

they dont know crap! this aint some lame misinformation scam like what michael bay tried to pull for ROTF. i honestly believe they know absolutley squat.
and the actors portraying dc characters can do no more than guess because they are also in the dark.
like us.

that is a very BIG reason why marvel has done better in hollywood over the past ten years. i almost wrote "so much better" and then i thought of the Dark Knight.
it is also the reason why i trust marvel to do a better job than dc. they have actually listened and ACTED upon all of our ravings. it took marvel a few years but last year they got it right with both Iron Man and Hulk.
and now they have already scheduled Thor, Captain America, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3 (Hopefully! RDJ dont back out on us now!), and the Avengers!

need i say more?

I agree with Wadey that there's a lack of a cohesive plan. If they had proper leadership at the top, we would get a clear plan, direction, timeline, status updates etc. for how they're going to control their franchises and the entire DC universe on screen. We're not getting them because they don't exist.

If you look at their comics division, they probably know exactly what they're going to do with each series as well as where the DC universe in aggregate is headed at least a year in advance. they get their writing teams together to discuss how things will tie in and they make sure their marketing team can turn these ideas into sales. If you look at how Marvel tried to use the Ultimate Universe to bring new comic fans in, you can see how comic companies that work together can create and implement a plan. DC could have done this with Smallville but the different teams don't work together as closely as they should and that's a leadership problem.

and the execs at marvel actually have a HUGE say in how their movies are portrayed.
dc never looked back and said, "hey this doesnt seem like a superman movie does it?"
no. it was a super powered soap opera.
i hate soap operas.
