Sam Raimi reveals plans for Peter Parker in Spider Man 4!

The director has spoken with MTV about how the character of Peter Parker will evolve in the upcoming 4th installment!
This from MTV News:



"Parker started as a little bit of a selfish, naive, and insecure high school kid," the director said. "He learned some lessons from his uncle and a little bit about the meaning of responsibility.

"In the second picture, he wrestled with his personal fulfillment versus that responsibility and, in the third film, I think it was a little bit about his growing hubris, his pride swallowed up, and the darkness that came out of that and the grief that it caused for his best friend and his girlfriend and himself."

For Spider-Man 4,' Raimi and Maguire envision Parker stepping into a new found maturity while also learning to balance his personal life with his time as Spider-Man. "I think it's about putting his head down and moving forward with the knowledge that he has this responsibility," Raimi explained.

"And it's about the growth of that understanding, that it encompasses more than just his sense of duty toward others but he also has a sense of responsibility as a human being toward the ones he loves."



Spider Man 4 will be swinging its way into theaters spring 2011.

Well, if this means that we'll see less of the whiney Peter Parker who cries every 5mins, then its good news I guess! Still, Raimi's insistence to focus so much time on a Peter Parker who is nothing like his comic book counterpart annoys me!

However, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 were both really good movies (despite some parts not being all that good) - I think that the crappy thrid installment has tainted us all a bit! Though if this is another flop, then I think its fair to say that Raimi needs to go!

I'm sick of the SPIDER-MAN movies being so much about Peter Parker, I mean every movie he cries and whinges, some hero, hopefully with this "maturity" Raimi is talking about we'll actually get to see Spider-Man acting like Spider-Man, making light of grim situations and cracking jokes, and no Goblins this time. If you do a 5th one through the ressurected Green Goblin in there but thats it. Kraven and Lizard are the logical vilains for the next one.

Plus does also allude to the Lizard in a way, that he has a responsibility to the ones he loves WHEN THEY TURN INTO LIZARDS! Or am I just reading too much into it

I think for the new spider-man peter is going to be more secrure about who he is and how being spider-man and peter parker are one and the same.(having that perfect balance between the two) in the comics he struggles with it all work,girls, being spider-man in general, this time around there wont be any EMO issues,
just the down to earth, clumsy, good ol spider-man.

I don't know, maybe I've been reading the wrong books, but isn't spiderman usually more about peter than the hero? The human interest to action ratio never bothered me in the movies, the whining in the third was weird but the ratio was otherwise right. Also, spiderman is never confident, his wisecracks are his way of coping with being scared to death and not knowing what to do, so I'd say that the spiderman we've seen thus far is more confident in his abilities due to the lack of humor.
I think that raimi's figured out what went wrong and might have an idea how to fix things, but only time will tell.

Lee, Josh, let's cool our heads guys. We don't want this to get too out of hand!

I have some faith in Raimi, after all he did give us Spiderman and Spiderman 2, monuments in the history of CBM's IMO.

Though, there is that elephant in the room by the name of Spider-Man 3, and we all know how good that was.

Just please get back to the tone of the first 2 films, get rid of the 10,000 sub plots, make it more lighter and make Spidey quip more, and not cry all the damn time.

MJ is in desperate need of improvement, she has to be the moral support for Peter, and give him hope when he's lost all of it. And she can't be the damsel in distress AGAIN. It's been the same for 3 movies, we get it! She doesn't have to be the reason Peter fights bad guys all the time!

thwhtGuardian-- a agree completly, i am actually a fan of every spider-man movie i liked them all. But they got a little side tracked in the third movie. with the sandman story and a horrible interpitation(spelled wrong) of venom. but other wise, the spider-man, peter ratio was spot on!
they should have only made venom the villian with a twist of "harry's revenge", no sand man. they should of locked down the venom origin and story, but they didn't
and that is where they went wrong

I just wish they hadnt killed off Harry - they should never have rushed into things by throwing him into that weird costume in Spider-Man 3! They shouldnt have actually revealed Spidey's identity to Harry - now we're going to have to put up with even more Peter/MJ scenes, lol! Harry's death also might mean no more cameos from Willem Defoe which would suck...I really hope he's back for Spider-Man 5/6!

I don't know about Kraven. Never read the comics, but love the '90's cartoons. In those there was a story where Peter was turning into the Man-Spider, you know, 8 eyes, 6 arms, the works. Enter Kraven to hunt him down. The greatest pray he ever had the chance to hunt. That's probably half of the story right there. Maby introduce this way the Scorpion hired and made by JJ. To also hunt Spidy. So first, Scorpion, then Kraven the Hunter. And you have to 4th movie. And at the end, have the good ol' professor turn into the Lizzard. A lead up into the 5th movie.

What do you guys say?

Harry in SM 3 was just an extreme snowboarder with bombs.

Connors HAS to transform into Lizard in the next one. We've been teased about it for 2 movies, "cut the foreplay and just ask" as Tyler Durden says.

Lizard presents an opportunity for great drama, emotional story events, and would be a kick ass CGI character. They could do a big first battle with Spidey and Lizard after Connors first transforms and it spills into the sewers. That would be awesome!

Then, we are taken to Africa, where Kraven is learning about the Lizard and Spiderman, and says that he's going to NYC for the greatest hunt of his life.

I just want Lizard and Kraven in there. Make it so! Raimi!

Or, have the Lizzard. Add Krave to the mix to hunt him and get in Spidy's way. Kraven wants to kill the Lizzard, Spidy wants to save him. And at the end of the movie hint at the Man-Spider story. Movie 5, have Scorpion and Krave hunt Spidy, but on thier own terms, not as a team. And the rest is up to the writers.

My top choice for Spider-Man 4 is Scorpion (who I think could carry a movie by himself) with a sub-plot for the Lizard (whilst the Macgargan story builds up into him geting his powers) Im not too keen on seeing Kraven though!

In the comics, Peter is filled with angst and self-doubt, coupled with an enormous guilt over his feelings of responsibility, so it's only natural that Raimi continue to explore these themes.

They made it painfully obvious that Sandman was a good guy and that he didn't want to hurt anyone. It would kind of ruin the ending to SM 3 if he turned bad again, same with Doc Ock.

I want the Sinister 6 to be Hobgoblin (Roderick Kingsley), Mysterio, Chameleon, Kraven, Electro, and Scorpion. I honestly hate Vulture, probably my least favorite out of Spidey's rogues gallery.

My choices for The Sinister Six would be:

Green Goblin
Scorpion
Electro
Vulture
Mysterio
Sandman

As Doc Ock seems to be almost definitely dead, then I think a resurrected Osborn would be a great choice to lead the Six - it might be a good idea to split that into two movies if it's going to work well. Theyshould film them back to back I think.

Lizard and Kraven in Spiderman 4 could be quite spectacular. As long as they don't create a talking crocodile with a coat on.
As for his emotions: Maybe Black Cat? Like that eh... villain!
But I'm afraid as long as McGuire is Peter Parker we'll never get rid of a whining Parker. ;)

the opening scene of the movie should have spidey stopping a lesser villain like rhino, or electro. then the movie should be lizard and kraven. if not i wouldn't mind seeing Chameleon.

Not seen the clip but I'm guessing he said this along with other meaningless words of dribble directors always use such as "this one's going to be darker", "this is on a much larger scale" and "we are going to stay true to the character".

Do directors all have a booklet called "Your Upcoming Movie: what to say to the press!"

Tyler, I assume you were born in '82, right? Then I guess you haven't read Marvel Two-In-One #96, where the Sandman first turned good? He's been flip-flopping ever since! So Raimi's portrayal of the character is actually accurate! Since Sandman's only out for money that would make him a merc, which is why he began working for Silver Sable back in '88. Technically, the 2nd Brotherhood of Evil Mutants became "good guys" since they joined up with the gov't back in '85 and changed their name to Freedom Force! They were always far less repentant than the Sandman, though!

Dr. Draper - What did we learn from Superman II? That as long as the multiple villans have a logical connection, then you're fine! Did Star Wars have too many characters? It's about how they're handled! Venom was shoehorned into the ending of SpM3, where he should have been saved for part four! The problem with using Venom was that he was brought in FAR too early in the franchise!!! The chronology of the books HAS to be adhered to, or the consequences will be severe!!!

Corndog - You're right! Spidey DID crack jokes in the first one! I think the drama of the story would be undermined if he was CONSTANTLY cracking jokes like he often has in the ccomics!

.....I dont know what to add to all of this, but really I want Lizard, I mean his role is long over do, and do something with the Symbiote. That is all I ask. Mybe introduce Mac Gargen at the end, so we can have Scorpion...then after all of that we get the Mac Gargen Venom. The bad ass Venom.

My problem is that Peter is too whiney in those films. It's true that in the comics, he rarely finds balance in his life, but i do grow tired of peter trying to "find himself" in each movie. This spidey just doesn't feel much like the one I know from the comics. I don't want him being super comedic, but I would like to see little more of the "Nerdy New York Wise-Guy" that we all know and love.

ya joshw24 i agree. The peter parker in sam's movies are NOTHING like how he was in the comics! Tobey maguire even said he doesnt read spidey comics. He doesnt even look like him. Peter parker in the comics was way cooler than he is in the movies. James cameron shoulda directed the franchise

We want a much more mature Peter Parker. Start by giving him a full time job at the Bugle, or graduating pHD in Physics, engaged to MJ. That sort of thing.
The next film should show how he handles his life as a crimefighter and as a professional. Let the audience feel that this guy has grown up and has accepted his responsibilities.
Yes, I would like to see the Lizard and Kraven this time, but maybe focus only on one villain, the Lizard. Kraven can make a cameo together with some of the other villains. Focus on the story of Dr. Connors in the same way as Spiderman 2 focused on Dr. Octavius.We have all seen that too many villains spoil the broth. Make the Lizard a more challenging opponent so Parker has to use everything he has to bring the villain down, IMO.

PS more challenging means the Lizard should taunt Spidey, intellectually.

thats why i'm not a big fan of his comics, though. its always the same thing. oh me and mary jane are having money problems. oh, mary jane says i'm not home enough. when i heard they were giving the marriage the axe i thought it was going to be the best thing ever...that is until i gave spidey books a chance again for the first time in years, and they hit me with the one more day nonsense.

anyway, yeah, i love spidey, just not his books. because he kind of is whiny, until he puts on the costume and becomes a smart ass.

I just want Spider-Man to show a bit of damn sarcasm in one freaking movie. Peter's supposed to be a quick-witted genius and the BEST humor the screenwriter could come up with for him to say is "Did your husband make it for you?"

Are you serious? Parker may be nerdy but he's not in middle school anymore. Time for some big boy humor.

@teabag: Oh, he's DEFINITELY a whiner! But the actor playing him has to be able to shut the whining off and switch to being humorous when the time calls for it. Tobey seems to only have three settings: whining, crying, bumbling.

THE LOGIC IS... Lizard has been worked up and i sure as hell don't want them to stretch it even further. NOW, the lizard SUCKS ASS and that's a damn fact!!! Alone, he sucks cause he's just a rampaging beast. No depth, no glory. You NEED Kraven to hunt him down for the prize!!! Spidey has to save his favorite teacher from Kraven. So GUNSMITH, you're on the money, boy!!! AFTER SM4, having Kraven in it, it would be logical to get The Cameleon in SM5. Maybe add Scorpion and it would be a blast ;)

Scorpion has a very short story to be fair dellamorte....Chameleon is spideys first super villain ans has been envolved in some of the biggest story's in Spidey comics....plus his links with Kraven work perfectly. Electro was never really involved greatly with story he's more a time filler :)

Not only does your idea for Spidey 4 make complete sense, but I wrote a similar treatment for SpM4 two years ago that was very similar and I decided to call it "The Web of Spider-Man" based on its themes!! I've noticed that we think alike on many topics!

You have to KNOW the material to be able to insightfully comment on these projects and you clearly do! THIS is how I can tell who the real collectors are!
