Why Bret Harrison is Perfect for the Role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man! (Updated)

Although its now confirmed that Tobey Maguire will return for Spider-Man 4 this is who I think would be a much better fit for the role...

I've never really liked Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man. Dont get me wrong - he portrays a fair few of Peter Parker's characteristics well on screen. Unforunately these only seem to be the whiney self pitying parts of Peter's personality instead of what the character is really all about. Its hard to explain, but to me when I see MaGuire onscreen I just dont see the Peter Parker from the comic books. Its not the fact that the movie version of the character hasnt always been written that well (X-Men Origins: Wolverine wasnt exactly the best film but Hugh Jackman just comes across AS Wolverine because he is passionate about the character) its just that he doesnt feel right for the part. Now admittedly this can be balmed on the writers but despite that I still dont feel that McGuire portrays etherthe Peter Parker or Spider-Man I know from any Spider-Man comic books!

However, whatever your opinion on how good a Peter Parker he is there is one very important aspect of Spider-Man that he just cant seem to pull off. That of course is humour. As has been explained in the comics throughout the years, Peter uses humour as Spider-Man to disguise his feelings over the dangers he faces. Apart from maybe two one liners over the course of three 2hr films, MaGuire's Spider-Man seems completely devoid of humour. Now admittedly, once again this is down to the guys who write the scripts not putting the jokes in but he really doesnt seem to be able to do the comedic aspects of the character even in scenes that are meant to be funny. I suppose that McGuire seems a little more adept at the dramatic side of things so why not find an actor who can do both? After all an actor who was perfect at nailing Spidey's funny side but couldnt handle the acting scenes where we see the dramatic side of Peter' life wouldnt work either!

Its for this reason that I think a new actor is needed. I know that right now its unlikely that they will cast a new actor unless Spider-Man 4 is a flop ratings wise like Spider-Man 3 was or if Sam Raimi or MaGuire decide to leave the franchise but on the chance that either of these things does indeed happen I think that the perfect replacement would be BRET HARRISON!

spidey1

I hadnt even heard of Harrison until a few months ago when I started watching the now cancelled (and brilliant) TV show, Reaper (despite the fact that the show recieved great reviews from critics and had a large cult following it was still cancelled by the CW - but i guess that they find it more important funding crap like One Tree Hill and 90210!) Anyway, after seeing Harrison on the show I knew right away that he was perfect for the part of Spider-Man. He is a brilliant actor and coincidentally his character on Reaper is very much like Peter Parker. As both a drama and comedy, Reaper gave Harrison the chance to show off his fairly diverse range of acting skills - when it comes down to the more serious scenes in the show he performs just as well as when he is playing the character in more of a slapstick humour type of way. Physically, he definitely suits the role visually and in my opinion looks far more like the Peter from the comic books than MaGuire does. If he were to take the part he might need to buff up a little but he doesnt seem exactly all that much out of shape so this wouldnt be a huge issue by any means! In the same respect he also is pretty good at the fight scenes and stunts that Ive seen him perform in Reaper which again is pretty important for a physical role like Spider-Man. Finally, in my opinion the best thing about Harrison is that whenever Ive seem him on TV he automatically comes across as being incredibly likeable - the very thing that to me, MaGuire does not but Peter Parker should.

Here is a short promo for Reaper that might give you an idea about what Bret Harrison is like as an actor (though there are quite a few more clips on YouTube in which you can see a little more - i posted this as its mainly spoiler free for anyone who hasnt watched the show)

I know a lot of you like McGuire butthis is just MY opinion. By the time Spider-Man 6 arrives the guy is going to be at least 40 and there comes a point where a 40 year old guy doesnt make for a realistic college kid or even a man in his twenties! I would be perfectly happy for McGuire to stay as despite what it may look like, I by no means hated him in the part and a lot of the time I actually really enjoyed his performance! This editorial was just my take on who would perhaps be a little better and also my No.1 choice for a replacement! Anyway, Id love to know what you guys think! Thanks for reading!!!

I said it before Josh. Reaper was cancelled cause it didn't have enough overly dramatic pining and lack of any good fight scenes. Those things will buy you 9 seasons on the cw.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/10/2009, 6:52 PM
superdog: lol, that seems to be the formula for success for any show on the CW! Reaper deserved a much better channel to be shown on especially when Kevin Smith was involved-the CW should have really made this into its flagship show..! what do you think for Harrison as Parker?
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 7/10/2009, 6:56 PM
I watched a couple of eps of Reaper and this guy seems pretty good. But i love Maguire as Spidey! He may not crack wise quite as much as he should, but then, you don't want it turning into something like Transformers 2 now do ya? (seriously, i amaze myself sometimes, i really do!).

Hate to say this, but OF COURSE Super-dork (MacGuire) is returning as Parker - IMDB has him listed as one of the executive producers for the SM4 (Can you start to smell the suckage yet?)!

JoshWilding - 7/10/2009, 7:02 PM
Ror: I havent actually been to see Transformers 2 yet! Is it really that bad? (think im gonna save my money to go see Bruno instead!)

loganoneil: yeah, a lot of this article is wishful thinking that McGuire will quit even though its seems inevitable that the whiney bitch will be back for Spider-Man 4!

Man, i hope that this article will make the front page like my 'Jensen Ackles for Captain America' one did...

I love Tobey MacGuire as Peter Parker and Spiderman... That's the tricky part about casting somebody for a role like this... they are playing one person with two separate identities that don't have much in common. I feel that MacGuire does both identities very well.
superdog
superdog - 7/10/2009, 7:32 PM
Josh@ I think this guy will make a good spidey. He can definitely do both the comedy and drama. But like ror says, I actually like mcguire. I agree he should crack wise more, but that is definitely the writers fault. I think Toby could do it. The 1st one was closest to that spidey. The sequels got away from that. But I think they could easily fix it.

Listen here, with all the recast bullshit going on here let's leave spiderman alone. We need to be able to rely on something solid. GL, superman, daredevil, iron man, hulk, where does it end? I have nightmares where the words reboot, and recast are coming to ruin my life. I will say that Maguire does alot more cracking in the spiderman video games then the movies. I think the next movie will be the one we're all waiting for. They learned what not to do from 3, hang on and hope

He looks the part, but I've never heard of the guy.

Personally, I never really like Tobey McGuire as Peter Parker, and I would welcome a change for the new movie, but unfortunately it's probably not going to happen...ever.

ya know, lee. i liked you. you seem cool. but your an idiot. lmao. not literally, but this guy is a really good choice for spiderman, ackles is a really good choice for Cap. I'll give you that Welling shouldn't be Superman. But, this guy does quite a lot of good casting work. and thats not just imo, thats in most opinion. Your kinda the minority on pretty much everything you say. I mean, no offense, but that dude that I forgot the name of, that you want as Cap, looks like a forty year old wearing eye liner. Who do you want if Tobey leaves? Sean Connery? Camilla Belle? Oh, Will Smith. Got ya. Actually, they'd all still be better than Tobey. I'm not really ragging on you, cuz I've seen you have some really good ideas. But, know when to give up man.

joslezio85: glad you like my fan casts! LEE only says that on every fan cast I do because of the fact that I ridicule that talentless turd he's so obsessed with, Jason Lewis. Go back and look at the fan casts i did a few months ago and he liked all of them pretty much. Im afraid LEE is close to becoming the new Supermike - and a huge douchebag!!

LEE: considering that the only fan cast that you've ever done consisted of a guy off an Aero ad to play Captain America, your opinion means jack shit to me!

LEEE777 - 7/11/2009, 6:14 AM
JOSH @ Your callin' me an idiot, man thats gold! So ive never cast anyone but lewis??? Damn all them pics i put up for SAM WORTHINGTON etc are not there then right lmao dude! Only supermikey here is you! ; )

Oh and i thought you was english JOSH??? welsh???

Dude JOSH @ All you picks for big screen superhero franchises are canceled or soon to be canceled tv stars??? Not even B movie actors???

If you read, your choice for spidey is sad, im mean, do you tend to ignore ppls comments that dont agree with you?? Damn, ive got a hang over on your starting lol!

JOSL @ That dude for CAP your on about got 363 votes an tACKLES got only about 15 more! Id say thats very good concidering this is a SCI/Fantasy site!!! Damn good infact! I like you too man! ; ) Its just JOSH always trys to wind me up and i wind him back lol! Its a luv hate thing heh heh!
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/11/2009, 7:09 AM
grif: not really because there were rumours McGuire wouldnt be back for 2, 3 and 4 so this article is just my choice for who I would want as Spider-Man IF/WHEN he leaves the francise.

teabag: I hope so because to some extent he was quite good I guess Im just not his biggest fan in the role - still if in Spider-Man 4 he does blow us away then ill be happy for him to saty in the role - Spider-Man 3 left a bad taste in my mouth i guess, lol!

SWEETJUSTICE: as you have shown from your posts on the Cap article you obviously have some issues and you're pretty obviously barely literate so go back to the trailer park or wherever you come from huh?

LEE: wanna tell me what other cancelled TV show stars Ive picked then? Id love a list because Ive been through all my previous fan casts and cant find a single ex-TV star in one of them! and yeah, you did put Sam Worthington up - after SHAMAN and several other posters came up with the idea! Oh and there have so far been just as many comments of people who like this idea as those who would prefer tokeep McGuire. I think you're problem is that you just dont like anyone who has a different opinion to you! And to be honest on my part its more of a hate hate thing - recently you just seem to come across as being a complete dick to be honest.

Back lol! : D

Hey i say BRET for SPIDER-MAN 2099!!!

See, i can be nice lol!

No @ JOSH @ I aint sheep! ; )

If i like a actor for a casting i put it on, you just seem to go with the masses. And i will still with who i originally pick, you chop and change with the weather dude lol.

I think SAM WORTHINGTON would make a great CAP but he's a way better GL. I reakon you even think REYNOLDS is a great choice for HAL dont ya lol????
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/11/2009, 7:34 AM
Anil Rickly: lol, thats something Ive always thought - especially when the comic book Peter webs his face up or something when he gets unmasked! the films also seem to kill off all the villains as well - Sandman is the only one whos survived a movie so far, lol!

LEE: as i said above i would love you to list the cancelled TV show actors I pick and also the actors who I apparently change my mind for - the only one that I can think of is changing from Wentworth Miller To Jensen Ackles after SHAMAN convinced me what a great choice Ackles would be!

If McGuire was out as Spidey, then hells yeah for Harrison. That dude could totally pull off the one-liners that the S-M franchise is sorely lacking. Btw, ComicBookBabe, good call on the Loop. That show was freakin' hilarious! Another case of a show getting canceled too soon 'cause all any of the general public(read: morons) wants is a bunch of rehashed shit that doesn't challenge their feeble intellects and senses of humor.

ComicBookBabe: im glad you like the article!! and dont worry, you'll get used to LEE acting like an asshole ;)

MatchesMalone: Ive never heard of The Loop (im not sure if its even aired here in the UK) but ill definitely look it up now! and i agree with you about how original shows like Reaper and even My Name is Earl are cancelled in preference of shows that no longer deserve to be on (Smallville being a good example) I blame the studios more than the public though...im guessing that the CW cancelled Reaper becasue they would rather show shit like One Tree Hill and 90210!!

Josh, don't worry about the haters man, that's actually a damn good choice. He has the whole "heroic loser" thing down well. I LIKED Maguire as Spidey but think he's very replacable. There was a rumor last year that either that kid from almost famous, or that other kid from sky high. I thought that would be cool as hell. It would be better if Spidey was in HS anyway, but the first two movies were good (actually the second one was great). What turned me off about Maguire was him screwing around about returning for the second film. I busted Christian Bale's balls unfairly in my last article, but I will say that Maguire needed to man up sooner. Most people still have to go to work, even with bad backs. If Harrison will do that, he's got my vote.

ComicBookBabe @ GEEZ, Me and JOSH are at it all the time! It's our thing lol! I ain't nasty, JOSHES got lot of AMMO too in the past on my stuff lol!

Damn, though JOSH, can't see the guy holding a big SPIDEY franchise though dude?? He ain't just got that IT thing! He ain't even that great in REAPER, an yes i do watch REAPER lol, nice show! ; )

Now like ANIL said WALLY WEST in a couple of years after BARRY FLASH would be cool! Now REYNOLDS is outta that one!
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/12/2009, 8:59 AM
LEE: lol, i guess to someone whos not used to it, our arguments must look pretty nasty (what with me calling you a Nazi the other day and all, hehe) I definitely think that Harrison has 'IT' and i did from the very first time I saw him in Reaper! The guy is a great actor and I think he could handle a big part in a movie like Spider-Man really well! He's young, not all that well known and im guessing if he had a big break like Spidey he would work his ass off to do a good job!

teabag: LMAO!!! :)

@josh@ I could see him getting as devoted as Hugh is with Wolvie..... it seems that's how it goes with these actors that are not that well known, they seem to get more enthused about the character they are attached too because of the fame they get from it. while on the other hand the ones that are already famous don't want to get type cast as that person and eventually back off the projects, which eventually screws the franchise.
