COMICS: DC's New POWER GIRL Gets Something Off Her Chest

Say goodbye to Power Girl's enormous cleavage window as DC Comics has handed over the role of Power Girl to Tanya Spears and that part of the costume would come off as inappropriate on the teenager. Oh yeah, she also gets pants! Nice, I like pants. You can check out more of Tanya's Power Girl in the February’s Teen Titans #7. Let me know what you think of Power Girl's new costume in the comment section. I also transcribed DC Comics' promotion for Power Girl, which you can read below.

First appearing last May in WORLD'S FINEST #23, Tanya was an intern for Starr Industries, run by Karen Starr-The Kryptonian Power Girl of Earth 2-but after an explosion in the lab that returned the original Power Girl to her world, Tanya awoke to find she'd inherited some new abilities.

New powers (and a huge check from her predecessor before she left) couldn't make up for everything Tanya lost in her time at Starr. During an attack by Apokolips baddie Desaad, Tanya's mother was murdered. Now the young hero wants to make sure she uses her powers to protect anyone else who could lose someone the way she lost her mother.

While she grew up in Boston, Tanya knew the best place to find heroes was New York City and that's just where she found the Teen Titans. But the Titans weren't quite the fit she expected, with disagreements, leadership challenges and in-fighting that led the new hero to realize maybe the Titans need a lot of work as a team.

Although Tanya's still exporing her new abilities for now it looks like the new Power Girl can lift up to three tons and survive almost any physical assault thanks to super strength and invulnerability she received from the original Power girl. Only time will tell if Tanya's powers will continue to grow.

As the dust settles from TEEN TITANS #7, Tanya will be faced with a choice between siding with the Titans or fighting against them in issue #8 (March) and ANNUAL #1 (April). To find out where she lands and how she'll use her powers, you'll wanna grab the newest issues of Teen Titans.

Saying it now before the uninitiated comics readers attack…

This can be a little confusing so bear with me. The familiar Power Girl still exists and has been part of the New 52. However, she is from Earth 2 (similar to the pre-New 52 version.) She's also lost from Earth 2 (it's comics) along with their version of Huntress. They're on the main Earth now. This is the Power Girl of the main Earth, just like Grayson debuted the Huntress of said Earth.

So two Power Girls, two Huntresses. Two different counterparts for each.

Soooooo... this is the best hair style they could think of? A 1970s throwback? Ugh... (~.~) This idiot obviously has no idea how much a black woman's hair can vary in style. Has he been in a cave for the past 40 years?

@Jer3miah

If you know Kenneth Rocafort first off, you know he's far from an idiot. He sketches and creates alternate designs almost everyday along with what he has for comic work. Secondly, designs in comics (in general really) have vast creative input. They unanimously decided on what the final design would, which brings me to my next point. There's definitely multiple designs that were made, we'll probably see what some of those were at a later time, but most will never see the light of day. And lastly, if you've even been reading the comics, this character has already been introduced with the same hairstyle. And guess what…Rocafort didn't draw it then.

They had no problem giving wonder girl (cassie sandsmark) giant (ugly) plastic boobs. Why not give the new power girl at least a decent size rack?

Yeah what I didn't realize until reading the description up above, classic Power Girl is now back on Earth 2. Until she's not again lol.

I think it's insulting and sort of confounding that both Marvel and DC can not find a way to make new ethnic heroes cool in their own right, and have to rely on passing the title on from pre-established characters.

Steel..."Let's make a black Superman"

Isaiah Bradley...aka "We want Captain America to be black all of a sudden"

Blue Beetle...."Bring Ted Kord back? Why do that when we could easily just make him a cliche'd spanish kid?"

Miles Morales..."Why couldn't he have been a new guy? Or at least Ultimate Scarlet Spider? Nah. [frick] it. Black Spider-Man."

Green Lantern..."Why not make Simon Baz a cool lebanese guy that fights crime and does stuff? Pffft. That's insane, let's just get yet another Green Lantern of the Earth sector. Because comics."

Captain Falcon America...."Remember when we tried to make Captain America black and people got mad? Well, let's just do what we did with the Winter Soldier, but with Falcon and people will be cool. Sure, we already had another person be Captain A, not even ten years ago, but let's do it again because now we can finally have BLACK CAP like we wanted!"

Ms.Marvel? "Well, there IS an open vacancy....I mean, we could just make a cool Muslim girl that's a super hero named something cool. But branding her as Ms.Marvel guarantees comics sold!!"

And now this nonsense. They're not even being original with the design. She's like a new 52 Bumblebee.

Wow shocking... going with the popular trend of changing every character black instead of just creating cool new black characters.... let the pandering continue

I think it's sad that these recent minority heroes in comics are piggybacking on names established by white heroes. Will anyone of them still be around in 10 years?

bakersfield - at least characters like Steel and Batwing are original characters. that I can support, but changing every established character black is insulting to everyone... blacks get hand me down characters, whites lose cherished characters and apparently every other race is irrelevant.... i cant wait for the day when people look back at this time and see how racist they are being in their attempt to be diverse
DTor91
DTor91 - 1/7/2015, 6:13 PM
@Bakersfield

Agreed. Although from a business point of view I get it. The names are recognizable so it's easier to make a new ethnic character with a familiar name and get money off of it. Otherwise, the character ends up being forgotten or just written out (cancelled if they got their own title.) But I do think it's best to make diverse characters with their own identities. However, once again, the business side:

A) it could be that writers have a tough time making a standout character that sit along the likes of Avengers and X-Men characters, etc. It's been getting harder to create new characters with longevity because…

B) Readers don't take enough chances on them. Most people stick with the familiar.

In the end it really is a two-way problem, and that's a shame.
