THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Extended Edition Blu-ray Announced

We figured it'd be coming, but now WB has officially announced this extended edition Blu-ray, which will contain nearly nine hours of bonus features and 12 minutes or brand new footage. Read on for more details and to take a look at the cover art.

Peter Jackson has recently wrapped filming on the third film in The Hobbit trilogy, and now Warner Bros. has announced that an extended version of the first film is coming to Blu-Ray...in the US only for now though. The longer cut will feature an extra 12 minutes of previously unseen footage, and fans will be able to choose from a 3-disc Blu-Ray or 5-disc DVD, or the more expensive 5-disc 3D Blu-ray set. Says Peter Jackson of the release:

“I’m thrilled that the Extended Edition will give fans the opportunity to experience certain key scenes in the film as they were originally shot, as well as an abundance of special features. It’s exciting to present this expanded and enriched version of An Unexpected Journey to allow fans to fully immerse themselves in the movie, before seeing the second part of the trilogy.”

Of course, that's not all! Just like the extended cuts of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, this set will contain The Appendices -- "nearly nine hours of new bonus features," which will consist of a commentary track, documentaries and other Tolkien snippets:

"The Appendices – A multi-part chronological history of the filming of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, covering pre-production in the various departments of the film in the months leading up to the start of principal photography, the boot camp training for the main cast, the work done on set chronologically through the three shooting blocks and in the world of its digital effects."

For now the only official release date is for the downloadable version on October 22nd, with the traditional boxed edition available on the 5th November. It's assumed that the sets will be available in the UK around the same time.

Awesome news but how much was actually cut, as the film was already quite long to begin with.

for only 12 minutes, I'm glad I waited and just didn't buy the theatrical release. I'll be glad to own the extended cut, but wouldn't have made a second purchase (unless the bonus features are incredible.)

I love you PJ, but you sure do love taking me for all I'm worth. Will I pony up the dough for this? Eventually yeah, probably. But next film I'm waiting and not buying the regular DVD when it comes out

I think 12 minutes more is remarkable given the fact that the actual movie felt like an extended edition to begin with.

I'll be buying this since I held off buying the theatrical version this time around.

I've shown this movie to friends and family when they visit. 60% fall asleep on the couch within the first 35 minutes.

LMFAO extended? People have taken shits longer than 12 minutes...this IS a letdown. I loved the movie, but this is one of the reasons why The Hobbit shouldn't have been made in first place, people do expect a lot more from this....and making it a trilogy was the most retarded decision ever made.

Here's a female dwarf in case you were wondering what they look like.

Yeah...I know.....

as a huge tolkien fan... i am also incredibly let down... i fear that all we will see is bomburs ass at rivendell shitting into the elven stream and a facefull of establishing shots of mountains and the like.

no, i fear we will not see the eagles eyrie or gandalf actually speaking to the eagles, they seem to have skipped that altogether and were dropped off at the carock, instead. i fear bolg has been stripped from the story altogether and the addition of the white council side story and the rock giant battle was all we got as far as new content.

when the lord of the rings came out... audiences grew accustomed to long epic movies
i am not at all displeased with the length of the film as i am a firm believer in the more the better especially when it comes to tolkien on film.

when word first grew of an extended edition on the horizon i was truly excited
now i feel extremely let down
the sequels had better make up for what could have been , only time will tell. and while i believe only peter jackson could have made these films as good as the lord of the rings trilogy, for the first time ever i am wondering what would have been had guillermo del toro not quit the production.

maybe you havnt seen the extended editions of the lord of the rings trilogy maybe u have regardless the "appendices" is almost guaranteed to be no more than the already publicly available video blogs that he released over the course of production compiled under one roof.

the EE lotr each had over 20 minutes of extra content added directly into the movie, which included many small but important bits from the books that made them feel more accurate and better on the whole.

my only problem with the news of the ee hobbit only being 12 minutes is that it is already fairly obvious what that 12 minutes will be... bombur taking a deuce in rivendell.

all that said... i love the hobbit and cant wait for the sequels
like lucasmend said the theatrical cut was like an extended cut to begin with and that is awesome. the movie was great for only being 1/3 rd of the story.

but after being billed first as two movies, then 3, then they pushed back the third films release from summer 2014 to december, the drastic rewriting of bolg and azogs story and the last minute addition of the CG azog. im cringing at the thought that they only have 12 minutes to add to a film they are billing as an extended cut

You know the world is upside down when fettastic is the fan defending the film and everyone else is a hater. :)

And Im with fet. 12 minutes is dissapointing when you compare it to the 30 minutes or so that was added to the LotR movies...but Unexpected Journey is long enough already. And 12 minutes far exceeds what most extended editions have.

And we knew there was deleted scenes because in the trailer you see Bilbo looking at the broken sword in Rivendell.

I will wait for the extended trilogy set. So I wont own these films until 2016. Im surprised that more of you arent waiting for that.

Why the hell is everyone complaining about only 12 mins of deleted scenes? Don't they realize that it means Peter only cut that much and we saw practically everything he shot for the first movie in theaters?

"12 minutes? What a letdown"

You guys know nothing about movie. 12 minutes is actually pretty high. Considering the movie was about 2 hours and 58 minutes, how many extra [frick]ing minutes do you want?

monkeyballs

LMAO Gollum was not scary in the book. Disturbing? Yes. SCary? No.
