Mark Millar Back on Superman?

We have heard of Millar's attachment to a live-action Superman movie before, but we thought that thing had gone sour. So, what's Millar talking about now...?
Here are Millar's statements from Mania:

Superman Red Son, that is. They just gave me a brand new hardback of the issues collected a few years back with lotsa extras, includign the secret Alex Ross stuff nobody's seen.

But this looks AMAZING! I didn't even know it was out. Have I got some kind of advance copy? Dc pretty good like that.

PS WB been talking to me about Superman again too, btw. Heh heh heh. More later...

There's a lot of good stuff in this hardcover. It not only looks beautiful (DC has great designers), but there's stuff you don't know about like the Alex Ross costume designs and so on. Some stuff even I hadn't seen myself. It's worth checking out and should give you a littl taste of what I have planned for a very secret and special project...

---
Hmmm interesting?
I don't think Red Son would be the next live movie adaptation of Superman but it will fit perfectly in DC's animated movies.

So, is that what WB and Millar is talks about an upcoming animated movie? Or are they starting to look at that Millar proposed trilogy with Matthew Vaughn.

As for me, I just want to see Superman fly again on the big screen.

LEEE777 - 10/27/2009, 4:43 PM
I hope WB does give Millar the chance for the next Superman movie. Millar knows how to write epic...
access - 10/27/2009, 4:48 PM
EPIC & SUPERMAN!

Yep thats all we need @ ACCESS!!
LEEE777 - 10/27/2009, 5:07 PM
Man I just want to see superman on the big screen. Hope it gets made before the end of the world.
fightingfoo93 - 10/27/2009, 5:07 PM
Miller would do an amazing job with this franchise. i say let it roll!
ecksmanfan - 10/27/2009, 5:14 PM
will someone just give him this job already i want an epic superman movie and i want it now... or within the next few years
bleedthefreak16 - 10/27/2009, 5:28 PM
Nice. If they do decide to get another Superman project going, this is totally the guy who should be doing it.
BillyBlack - 10/27/2009, 5:31 PM
WB isn't as focused on superman as they should be. You'd think that they'd give a little more time and respect to the superhero that put them on the fantasy map back in 78
supermarioworldE - 10/27/2009, 5:34 PM
poor supes hes got more rumors and news then any1 else but yet nothing ever significant
jimthefan - 10/27/2009, 5:34 PM
I would be happy if he was a consultant on the reboot and helped with the overall storylines.

Though I would save the actual writer's job for an actual, well, screen-writer.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/27/2009, 5:34 PM
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE JUST MAKE THIS DAMN MOVIE BEFORE THE MAYAN CALANDER ENDS AND WE ALL GO THE CRAP?
GUNSMITH - 10/27/2009, 5:36 PM
Yeah - considering RETURNS was part of at least half of the old series, it wasnt a reboot - so I'd be fine with Miller taking over and rebooting. I think he'd breathe a new life into the character, something Supes desperately needs. The first new MOS movie we got in decades was made to mimic the old - audiences have changed, and so should Superman. Bring it, Miller!
SciFiNut - 10/27/2009, 5:42 PM
BATMAN WAS REINVENTED, AND IT WAS A SUCCESS...SUPERMAN WAS COPIED BY SINGER,TOO NOSTALGIC...WELL LOOK WHAT HAPPENED.
GUNSMITH - 10/27/2009, 5:46 PM
I agree. We need a re-invigoration of the Superman franchise. Get cracking Mr. Miller ;)

DOOMSDAY!!!
LEEE777 - 10/27/2009, 6:09 PM
I don't know if I'd want to see a doomsday movie, atleast not right off the bat. I think I'd like to see a faux kryptonian army, like in Birth Right.
thwhtGuardian - 10/27/2009, 6:17 PM
Mark Millar is probably my favourite comic book writer ever...as good a news as this is, I'd rather he stick with Marvel so we can keep getting stuff like Civil War and Old Man Logan!!!
joshw24 - 10/27/2009, 6:17 PM
I KNOW I don't want a Doomsday movie.

Doomsday sucks balls. Here are the reasons why:

1. He's one note. All he does is kill people. Nothing else. Wow! That's so......boring.

2. Absolutely 0 depth. This sort of goes hand in hand with #1, but it's a bit different. Doomsday is not interesting at all. He has no complexity and is as predictable as the weather.

3. It's too early for him. The next movie will be a reboot (most likely), does it really make sense to start a new continuity with the title character dying in the first 45 minutes?

4. Supes' death won't have the impact it should have. If you kill Superman off so quickly, the audience won't have had enough time to bond with the character, and thus, his death won't have as much emotion/influence that it would if the story was saved for a sequel.

5. Supes just "died" in the last one, Returns. He "died" then comes back to life. In the Death of Superman arc, isn't the main gist of it "he dies, then comes back to life?"

6. He is a blatant rip off of the Hulk. Hulk gets stronger the more you anger him/fight him. Doomsday gets stronger every time you hurt/"kill" him. Both are huge strong monsters, and what I just mentioned before.

Moving on, here is my plan for the Supes/Justice League franchise, this would be in chronological order:

Reboot- Brainiac as main villain, Parasite or Metallo as small (Scarecrow in TDK type role) villain, Lex Luthor as supporting character (come on, he's an essential part of the DC universe as a whole). Set up for Darkseid invasion at the end.

Justice League- Darkseid invasion as main plot. End with set up for Doomsday's arrival on Earth.

Reboot Sequel- Death of Superman storyline. They can bring in other established JL characters this way, and make Supes' death the big A-bomb on the DC universe it should be.

I know that an attack from Lee that bashes this comment and sh*ts over Brainiac is coming, but I stand strongly by my reasons. Doomsday SUCKS.

InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/27/2009, 6:19 PM
doomsday would not be good in a live action movie
and they ruined the character on smallville
Kryptonite27 - 10/27/2009, 6:23 PM
SMALLVILE sucked DOOMIE off!!!

He's meant for the BIG CGI Screen!!!

EPIC!!! $$$$$$

Brainaic sux TYLERS ballz! : D

'I know that an attack from Lee that bashes this comment and sh*ts over Brainiac is coming,' Lmao!

DOOMSDAY IS COMING!!!

LEEE777 - 10/27/2009, 6:41 PM
GUNSMITH @ LOL man. before 2012... bring routh back for [frick]'s sake... and NO origin ... have the origin explained like it was in returns..
Denn1s - 10/27/2009, 6:41 PM
DENN1S @ Good call! ; )
LEEE777 - 10/27/2009, 6:44 PM
Ok, I liked Returns as i have stated many times! So, I really want Routh back..but whatever! Just make a damn movie. I really want that rumored Supes cameo in Lantern to happen and then his own movie. Doomsday..I have to agree with Tyler. No doubt having that Death Of Superman story would be a gig special effects, action extravaganza..but thats pretty much all it would be. Better to get a villain like Brainiac any day..mind and muscle. Get some dialog going between them. What the hell is Supes and Doomy gonna talk about?
Rorschach01 - 10/27/2009, 6:46 PM
you silly mortals!that last super piece of crap was one of the first sighns of myan doomsday!
ProfOJ - 10/27/2009, 6:49 PM
Denn1s: Personally, I think I have a great idea to not only recap the origin (to satisfy those who aren't up to speed), but do it quickly and move it out of the way so we can get onto the real meat of the story!

I picture this, start off with the credits in space, an homage to the classic Donner films, and then we are brought down to earth, in the middle of Smallville, as the viewer is treated to a double montage of sorts. In the back ground, you see the life of Clark play out from when he reaches Smallville in the ship up until he walks into the Daily Planet offices. In the front of the screen, a montage of newspaper articles (perhaps published by the Daily Planet...) detailing significant events in Clark's growth into the hero. For example, one could have the headline "Sudden Meteor Showers in Smallville!" while another could be "Crashing Passengers Miraculously Saved!", etc, etc.

Think of the montage of costume drawings in Spider-Man 1.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/27/2009, 6:49 PM
routh was good thow,it just should have had writers that gave a fig!!spacey was even good!it was like watching a cool looped screen saver, not a movie, as for the kid!? do we need too get into the physics!!! lol
ProfOJ - 10/27/2009, 6:52 PM
Doomsday is not a good choice of villain unless you want a 2hr CGI fight scene! Id rather see a Superman villain with brains as well as brawn!
joshw24 - 10/27/2009, 6:56 PM
The next Superman needs to have a villain he can have a punch up with. Darkseid, Mongol, Doomsday, Brainiac, anyone will do but please no more Lex as the main villain.
Axl - 10/27/2009, 6:56 PM
You might as well just get Michael Baysplosions to do a Doomsday movie... ;)
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/27/2009, 6:58 PM
kill superman's kid!! they will use abomination's character for doomsday and would add more bones lol
redskullrevenge - 10/27/2009, 7:41 PM
Tyler@ And a farting doomsday, plus ma Kent smoking dope and humping Jimmy olsens leg. Lee77 would live it :)
superdog - 10/27/2009, 7:42 PM
superdog: LMAO! And then Doomsday would pee on Jimmy while he's holding a camera ;)
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/27/2009, 7:46 PM
The best thing to do is bring in Darkseid. That whole dynamic would make for an epic movie. His hatred for the Kryptonian goes past Lex Luthor's. But hey I'm just a fan and our opinions rarely count when it comes to Superman.
hewilldefytheirgravity - 10/27/2009, 8:18 PM
Tyler u got the idea, but i don't think brainiac as the nemesis of any superman movie he is so conected to lex luthor that this fact can make the people upset, supes got many enemies so just pic one (not luthor again please). i guess when we think of superman all of us agreed that luthor is totally unnecesary. warner burn luthor cinematic ass, he needs a refresh, also superman need one.
Ship - 10/27/2009, 8:38 PM
Darkseid/Infinity Gauntlet
I wouldn't mind seeing Crisis over the course of three films. I say give Millar's script a shot as well.
gtrman - 10/27/2009, 8:40 PM
Give Routh the cape and give us an epic movie already. It's f**king embarrassing that we have all these green lit superhero movies coming, and the one icon of all of them is missing.
ASSASSIN666 - 10/27/2009, 9:03 PM
Ship: I'm not sure I totally understand your comment.

Though I think (keep that in mind, I'm just assuming right now) what you mean is that audiences might not accept another villain for Supes, after Lex is so important to the character.

I disagree. Batman Begins got great reviews and audience response, but the Joker, the most iconic Bat-villain, was not there. I highly doubt that Lex not being in the movie would make people upset. I don't think they'd even care at all.

With that said, I actually want Lex to be in the next movie, just not as the main villain of course. I want him to be in the background, maybe being shown as slowly descending into the true madman we know and love from the comics, but he still has a heroic public appearance, much like in the animated DC universe.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 10/27/2009, 9:19 PM
I just don't want a Trilogy ... With the stupid Red Sun crap ... Because superman wouldn't be able to leave and find another yellow sun .. .. BS.... NO DOOMSDAY until the middle of Superman story... Sorry LEE .... :-)

@ Tyler - You make quite a few valid points as usual... :-)
thegreek - 10/27/2009, 9:24 PM
I think DOOMSDAY will be best for a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie... and have supes die on that movie that sets up a sequel!
access - 10/27/2009, 10:01 PM
I think Doomsday has his time and his place. Tyler is 100% right that it's silly to kill Supes off
in the first movie out of the gate in a new franchise. There would be no connection with the character before his death.

Another thing I've hammered out there for a while now is that people forget two things about the death of Superman story.

One: The death held little weight, because you knew he would be back. The real emotion in the story
came after his death because DC did a great job showing how his loss effected all the other heroes,
that's where it got really good.

Supes death would better served as part of a post Justice League movie. In fact kill Supes in the third
or fourth outing of his new franchise. Pick up the aftermath in the next JL flick and show the reign of
Supermen.

Two: Remember the fall of Supes and the Fall of Hal Jordan are linked. Make three Supes and GLs with
the casts that get set up for the new franchises with Ryan Reynolds and whoever they get to play Supes.
Make Justice League one and two in between, JL3 will focus on the Superman aftermath and the reign of
the Supermen. The Climax of JL3 will end with Supes return and the breaking of Hal with the destruction
of Coast City. Pickup in the next GL with the turning of Hal to Parallax and intro the new Green Lantern.

Will all this take a long time... oh yeah. But the payoff will be better because by the time all this
happens, we will have known the characters for years and seen them grow... All the better to pull the
heart strings when we see them torn down and beaten. Use a spoon, it'll hurt more.

nerosday - 10/27/2009, 10:22 PM
i hate Millar's supposed take on Superman.

all that needs to happen is up the action, get him a real foe that can take a kryptonian punch, make Lex a secondary character and not the main villian, keep Routh as Superman and dump everyone else.
l0rdleg0las - 10/28/2009, 12:15 AM
i don't think doomsday should be in any movie. if you put him in as the main villain, it'll be a dull movie with nothing but action. if you put him in as a secondary villain, then you're not doing the character justice. and last, doomsday is quite possibly the worst comic villain ever created. no depth whatsoever.

and i don't think we'll ever see a superman: red son adaptation. something tells me the studio wouldn' make a movie about about a communist superman, lol
CorndogBurglar - 10/28/2009, 5:18 AM
although it WOULD be cool if they started making "elseworlds" movies that focus on different characters ever time. but that'll never happen either
CorndogBurglar - 10/28/2009, 5:20 AM
From Stuggling to Defeat an intelligent human(with absolutely no superhuman powers whatsoever - Lexx Luthor) to fighting probably the most indestructable being in the Universe? No Fu-cking thanks....cuz in Superman returns he doesnt look that Super if he cannot deal with Lexx Luthor! Judging from that horrible movie...Gorilla Grod would kill Superman becuz he is far more intelligent than Lexx and has superpowers...i know thats not true but thats what the movie tells me...
For those of u who remembered the movie u'll see that Superman was Bastardized twice....as a character getting a timid showing and as a deadbeat dad!!!
there is no build up there....i say Brainiac!!!

Doomsday should be a climax movie...something like the Avengers being assembled. It shouldnt be corny and chessy and his Bastard Son has no merit to be in that movie....Doomsday kills and exterminates species...this movie has to take a deeper darker tone than any movie WB has created.i dont want to see Doomsday come to earth and hit a human and he ends up in the hospital or he and Superman fight to the end with no casualties and ppl only suffering from nicks and scratches!!!any Cotton-Candy Doomsday movie will be an epic fail.
When Doomsday comes to earth....People gotta Die!!! and trust me WB is not ready to take that tone after the tragic end of Singer's superman.they have to rebuild an audience and having a more adult oriented(non-kid friendly) movie will mean major losses for them!!!trust me folks ....we aint seeing Doomsday anytime soon!!!
Kes - 10/28/2009, 6:02 AM
A Superman film needs one main antagonist and some secondary villians. Whether it is Metallo or Toyman or whoever, use those guys to battle Superman at first and then lead up and introduce the main villian who will be a worthier foil to Superman than the secondary villians.
With Lex Luthor a behind the scenes antagonist, pulling all the strings. And,of course, he will have his public face too.
6of13 - 10/28/2009, 6:20 AM
Rorsch, you liked "Returns"? Gee, did you ever read a Superman comic book before seeing it?

;- )

Just ribbin' ya, man.

I think that the Superman reboot (which I hope will be the first WATCHABLE Superman movie!!!) should actually go over to the Dark Seid. Darkseid is an incredible character, along with Mongol, and opens the door for Doomsday and the Death of Superman (which should actually be a cliff-hanger; I want little kids clutching their mommies' skirts crying "Why? Why? Why, mommy, why did they kill Superman?").

I like Braniac a lot, but for the next Superman movie, how about a character of EPIC depth, incredible depravity, and someone that Superman has to throw down and just get jiggy with to save the entire planet from extraterrestrial slavery?

Otherwise, just bring back Richard Donner, throw in Mr. Mxyzptlk to kidnap Superman's bastard progeny from the last movie, throw in Beyonce as Lois Lane and Lindsey Lohan as Lana and just kill the franchise for good, since it was stillborn in the cradle with the first crappy movie and just went into the toilet ever since.

I am hoping for the former.

Perhaps the children of the Superman creator can intervene and save this franchise once they get control back from WB and DC. Wish it had not happened, but it has. Hell, there's even talk of taking Superman independent and even talk of moving him to MARVEL!!!

Could you get your heads around that, True Believers?

'Nuff Said!

Kes - 10/28/2009, 6:24 AM
@bropous Darkseid = action and depth.....great choice
Kes - 10/28/2009, 6:26 AM
I personally think Brainiac would be a great villian to translate into a movie because he can take many forms. He also can show a different vulnerablity in Superman rather than just Kyptonite. He can get into Superman's mind and really [frick] with him.

Also in my opinion,if they decide to move forward with this project, I think they should stick with Routh. I don't know of anybody who would be better. I also don't think he got a fair shake and being somebody who is actually a fan of the comics and sci-fi/dorky shit like we all are, we should at least give him a second chance to do a project he's actually passionate about. That's just me though.

Plus in Superman Returns when Richard White and Lois Lane are kind of wondering if Clark Kent is Superman while eating lunch, when he drops his shit and gives a smile, that God Damn dorky ass smile of Routh's actually kind of made a some what lame joke kinda funny.

I think another cool aspect they could put into the movies that we haven't seen in a Superman depiction is how Frank Miller writes Superman like he kind of has a God complex like he doesn't outwardly say that humans should listen to him and hold him up higher on a pedistal but he comes off that way through his actions and what he says. Because I don't care how good of a person you are, if you had the abilities of Superman you would kind of have a chip on your shoulder.
FlashThompson - 10/28/2009, 7:01 AM
@ Tyler Hi I think we have the same opinion about this topic but, as you said you didn't get what I just said about it, I think Lex can and actually should be (as a secondary character)in the new Superman's movie but choosing brainiac to be the main enemy is not so good because brainiac and Lex are too alike and are to connected so I would like them to choose a different one this time.
Ship - 10/28/2009, 8:45 AM
I agree with ship. And Flash, good points on the God Complex.

However, I say again, all previous: Routh is NOT a good choice for Superman. He is an excellent choice for Clark Kent, but he is more like Superboy than Superman once he gets the blue suit on.

Superman really needs more BULK. And he needs, I say again, the look that he could rip a planet in half if he wanted to, but wouldn't. Routh looks too much like a latte-sipping, recycling New Urbanist metrosexual instead of The Man of Steel.

I know that my own standards for casting are extremely high, finding an actor who can be both a convincing Clark Kent nerd wimp and a convincing I-can-kick-half-the-universe's-ass-with-one-ball-tied-behind-my-back-but-I'm-a-good-guy-who-was-raised-right-so-I-guess-I'll-stick-around-Earth-and-save-the-humans'-worthless-asses-time-after-time-for-no-pay Superman. This is why I say, throw the casting whide-open and find the BEST actor for the job, based not on a resume, but on talent and the right look.

Brainiac is far too similar to Lex Luthor to be enough of a change for a reboot. Darkseid, however, with Mongol, getting their asses handed to them by Supes, retreating home and sending in Doomsday to eradicate Supes, then coming back to try and enslave the Earth, only to be confronted by the JLA minus Supes (until he comes back) would be phenomenal.

The visual I have of Batman on a rooftop, pulling off his cowl and crying like a baby because Superman is dead just equals box office platinum! Or Wonder Woman sobbing, with Martian Manhunter and Hawkman throwing an arm around her to comfort her, wow. REAL emotions. A REAL story. REALLY watchable, multiple times.
bropous - 10/28/2009, 8:57 AM
I can see it now.

The JLA is hard-pressed. They are backed into a corner, with Darkseid's alien hordes descending, and at the head of his army, the juggernaut Doomsday. Superman is gone. Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman and Green Arrow are fighting for their lives, and getting their asses handed to them. It looks bleak, Wonder Woman hits the dirt on one knee, Green Lantern falls to the ground, Flash zips back and forth between them to make sure they are still alive, Batman takes an alien round to the shoulder and falls.

It's all over. Doomsday waves back his army, Darkseid orders him to advance and finish off the JLA. Doomsday advances, slowly, menacing. The deaths of the JLA are almost assured. He towers over the beaten team, raises his fists to finish them all off...

Then, a flash of blue! Doomsday hurtles back into space, being pummeled mercilessly by a rejuvenated Superman, a surprise return from the land of the dead, and the JLA rallies, plowing into the alien army. Once the army is defeated and Supes beats the living crap out of Doomsday, Superman and the JLA go after Darkseid and Mongol.

Box Office Platinum!
