Watch The Very First (Still Unreleased) Animated Adaptation Of THE HOBBIT

Back in 1966, animator Gene Deitch collaborated with Czech illustrator Adolf Born to create this 12 minute version of Tolkien's classic tale. It never saw the light of day, have a look and see if you can tell why..

To say this heavily abridged version of the story takes a few liberties is an understatement. Obviously to tell the story in under 12 minutes requires a lot of stuff to be left out and brushed over, but there are other changes that are quite bizarre. The addition of a princess, no Dwarves, Trolls become "Groans", and most strangely Smaug the Dragon becomes SLAG the Dragon. Yes, Slag. I guess in this version he was a promiscuous East Londoner..

Despite the crazy changes I did sort of enjoy that, although I have no idea why!

This to me is about on par with Immortals in ruining an epic story. Immortals gets one notch up mainly for the sexy and choreography.

Looks just like what Marvel did back in the mid 60's with turning comics into cartoons. Nowadays they call 'em motion comics, and the kiddies thinks it's neeto.
