Official Synopsis For STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Hits

Until now we didn't know a thing about the plot of J.J.Abrams' Star Trek sequel, but the following synopsis sheds a bit of light - apparently there will be "war-zone worlds", manhunts, and a "one man weapon of mass destruction". Read on for the pretty revealing breakdown..

Paramount Pictures has released the following synopsis for Star Trek Into Darkness..

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Interesting stuff - particularly the reveal that the movie would seem to hinge on Kirk chasing the bad guy (presumably Benedict Cumberbatch's character) across the cosmos. Do you guys like the sound of this? Star Trek Into Darkness stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller, and arrives on May 17th, 2013.

The cast from the reboot with Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, AND Peter Weller added? Who could resist?

Not knowing who Gary Mitchell is makes me wonder what the commotion is about...

Besides, the synopsis makes him sound like a mix of Schinzon and Khan to me, and they were the best villains outside of the Borg Queen.

No one else thinks that the epic chess game of life and death is closer to Kirk's battle with Khan?

I'm good with Gary Mitchell if it turns out to be him....hell I'd be good if it was Harry Mudd hahaha. Effin love Star Trek. So glad it's glory has been restored after Enterprise took a dump on it.

I'm glad they're doing Gary Mitchell, that way they can do Khan for the threequel.

Gary Mitchell is in the first William Shatner starring episode of Star Trek. He accidentally gains cosmic powers. Kind of a Dark Phoenix story.. It could be good (IF that's actually the plotline they're going with) but the first movie was pretty awful. good cast. good director. good fx.. deplorable writing. BUT there was a writer's strike at the time so maybe this will be better.
I freaking love Star Trek but so far have not been convinced that it's totally in the right hands. Here's hoping though.

and I know they were aired out of order. the Gary Mitchell episode was the third one aired I think but it was in fact the first one they filmed with Shatner.

I like it-- it sounds like they went ahead and did a reversal of the dynamic from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Now, instead of the villain hounding Kirk, Kirk is hounding the villain, looking to settle a score of some sort.

I'm not going to speculate on who the villain is, though, because I don't care: all I care about is that he's played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and that's awesome.

@TheFox I agree with you, I don't like speculate who the villian is going to be, all i know is that it should be a good movie. All we gotta remember is that it's two weeks until we get a trailer with the hobbit movie.

Hey guys.
We are arguing with a friend of mine about this "One man weapon of mass destruction" thing.
What do they mean with this phrase? Like there is a man who is so powerfull he can be a weapon of mass destruction? Or there is a man who posesses such a weapon?

I'm not the biggest trekky, but I remember my pops taking me to see all the next generation movies and I liked the reboot. I used Wiki to find Gary Mitchell's backstory, this sounds badass.

STAR TREK The old Series (TOS) Synopsis episode with Gary Mitchel. found on Ex Astris Scientia (UBER TREK WEBSITE, one of the best..)

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/episodes/tos1.htm

WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE Stardate 1312.4: On the way to the Galactic Barrier the Enterprise picks up a disaster recorder from the old Earth ship S.S. Valiant that disappeared 200 years ago, indicating that something related to extrasensory perception (ESP) happened to the crew. The Enterprise crosses the barrier nonetheless, whereby nine crew members are killed and the engines burn out. Moreover Kirk's old friend Gary Mitchell begins to develop ESP powers that pose a growing threat to the ship. Kirk assigns psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth Dehner to observe him. When the Enterprise arrives at the Delta Vega station for repairs, Kirk sees no other way but to exile the dangerous individual that Mitchell has become on the uninhabited planet, with the option to blow up the facility if necessary. Mitchell, however, kills Lt. Kelso and escapes with Dehner who too has mutated in the meantime. Kirk goes after them with a phaser rifle, but Mitchell easily anticipates the attack and prepares to execute his old friend. Dehner, with what is left of her humanity, decides to help the captain and weakens Mitchell at the expense of her own life so Kirk can kill him.

"This episode is a Template for alot of Star Trek episodes, ALOT!"..
"So glad the writers keep sticking to TOS"

I wouldn't be so sure it's Gary Mitchell for two reasons, 1st being Mitchell gained his powers at the Galactic Barrier which is nowhere near Earth or any war zone planet. And 2nd, the official comic series that bridges the gap between the two films already covered the Mitchell story. And I'd bet everything I own it's not Khan. People tend to forget Khan wasn't as evil in his first appearance. The only reason he was so villainous in the movie was because he wanted revenge on Kirk for stranding him for years on a world where his wife and several of his comrades died. And that hasn't happened yet.

I'm just happy the villain isn't Khan. Gary Mitchell is fine. He only cropped up in one episode of TOS, using Mitchell in this could allow for more character development for him
