Variety is reporting that Sony Pictures Animation has enlisted Joaquim Dos Santos (Voltron: Legendary Defender; The Legend of Korra), Oscar-nominee Kemp Powers (Soul), and Justin K. Thompson to direct the hotly-awaited follow-up to the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

The trio has been hard-at-work on the project since the beginning of production, utilizing a screenplay written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are also returning as producers, and David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsWonder Woman 1984).

In a joint statement, the directing team expressed their excitement, “The crew behind the ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ set such a ridiculously high bar, and we’re humbled to take on the challenge of charting the next chapter in the story of Miles Morales.

While casting details are still under wraps, both Shameik Moore and Academy Award-nominee Hailee Steinfeld are expected to reprise their roles as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy. It seems probable that a combination of Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, Zoë Kravitz, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, and/or Nicolas Cage will also be back in some capacity along with Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099.

In addition to Lord and Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg will be back as producers, with Alonzo Ruvalcaba co-producing. Peter Ramsey, who was a director on the first installment, and Aditya Sood are attached as executive producers.

I've said before that the first Spider-Verse was so good, it's practically set the bar impossibly high for a sequel to trump it. Looking at the talent behind this tho... I may be eating my words like...

Loved the first film (now my favorite Spider-Man film) so the sequel is really going to have its work cut out. Still excited for it.

@oldnoname - SAME! I think it was at least a year after release before I finally bought this on iTunes. I can't even remember why I didn't jump on board, but I'm with you, I'll be there opening night*...

*side topic - does opening night mean in theaters or digital release now??

Holy shit!

I was already on board with Dos Santos incredible work on Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra

But adding Kemp Powers to the team is a power move! His One Night In Miami script is phenomenal and Soul is one of the best animated films of recent memory for me that legitimately made me cry.

And Thompson upgrading from production designer of Spiderverse to now being a director is a great sign

Spider-Verse is already one of my favorite CBMs ever, but this sequel is really looking to top that for me. Hard not to get hyped with this news

I loved the first one. Still do. I don't think I love it as much as some do. It's not in my Top 3 Movies Spiderman has appeared in. That's not to say I don't love it, it just didn't knock me out.

I'm looking forward to this sequel but I'm not going lightly on it. I need some bigger concepts and more engaging personalities to hook me into a sequel. I'm seeing some people commenting "Idk how they could possibly top the first one" and they are going to need to go way bigger to even get me excited.

I'm not excited. I am looking forward to seeing what this next installment has to offer. I'm hoping Miles goes Spiderverse hopping and stuff gets nuts!

I'm stoked for this! More big budget animated comic book movies! DC should do this. Animation has always been their forte
