Superman Movies

Release Date: 1978 - Warner Bros.

Cast: Marlon Brando - Jor-El, Gene Hackman - Lex Luthor, Christopher Reeve - Superman/Clark Kent, Ned Beatty - Otis, Jackie Cooper - Perry White, Glenn Ford - Jonathan Kent, Trevor Howard - 1st Elder, Margot Kidder - Lois Lane, Valerie Perrine - Eve Teschmacher, Phyllis Thaxter - Martha Kent, Susannah York - Lara, Jeff East - Young Clark Kent.

Summary: Unable to convince his peers of impending doom, Jor-El, scientist of the planet Krypton, sends his infant son Kal-El in a rocketship to Earth just as Krypton explodes. Crashing down in the midwest, the boy is adopted by farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent. After realizing the boy is "special" and not of this Earth, the Kents name the boy Clark and raise him as their own--keeping his wonderous abilities under wraps. After his adoptive Dad dies of a heart attack, Clark journeys into the frozen arctic where he builds his fortress of solitude with the help of Kryptonian science--a crystal he finds in his spaceship. There he learns of his true identity and powers from an amazingly interactive holograph of Jor-El. He is educated in all things Kryptonian for an indetermined period of time. When he leaves the arctic, he is older and understands what what his "purpose in life" is supposed to be. He immediately flies to Metropolis and gets a job at the Daily Planet newspaper where he sets up his alias as the "mild mannered reporter". Not long after that, things occur that give Superman his chance on the scene--culminating in a showdown with arch-villan Lex Luther, who plans on remaking the California coastline to his own specifications using a couple nuclear missles.

In this interview with Smallville executive producer Brian Peterson he talks about the impact of "Absolute Justice" and Amanda Waller on the show's mythology, more frequent embracing of the DC Universe and just when we'll see the actual Superman costume, among other things.

gambitfreak - 12/23/2008, 4:16 PM
the need to get tom welling and shit can brandon routh he's not bad as clark but he blows as superman. and stop with lex already i mean g-d he's had 4 f-ing movies where he failed to get superman there are other villians out there darkseid, mongel, metallo take your pick. i know they are trying to keep it real but your making a movie about a guy from outerspace that has superpowers i think the limits to reality are already bent so lets get on to someone that can put up a fight instead of someone trying to get him with kryptonite.
wadewilson1 - 12/29/2008, 4:12 AM
Actually, they need to stay with Brandon Routh. Welling is terrible.
doubledown44 - 12/29/2008, 12:32 PM
Welling is an awful clark and would be a worse Superman.
Montavius - 12/29/2008, 7:43 PM
BRANDON is SUPERMAN, NOW. Don't need another. Simply a better story with greater action. Btw, he's not a bad actor either.
SupermanReturns2 - 12/30/2008, 7:37 PM
Why is everyone hating on Welling? He's the reason Smallville lasted eight years and counting! Give him his props!
KryptonianRage - 1/8/2009, 9:11 AM
bullcrap.
SupermanReturns2 - 1/8/2009, 11:58 PM
"Bullcrap?"

I have to say I agree with KryptonianRage. I don't why everyone is hating on Welling. Most of you people don't watch Smallville though. Sure you may have seen an episode here or there but you don't watch the show, and even when you tune in it is with a bias. Your love for BR makes you hate Tom Welling because your afraid that he will steal the role from BR, and you should be afraid. Tom Welling is better for the role in every concieveable way. BR wasn't a bad fill in while Tom finished up Smallville, but when he is done he should take his rightful play on the Big screen as Big Blue.

Yes i am a smallville an welling fan but ROUTH should be in the next movie and it should be called= SUPERMAN VS DOOMSDAY lol as a movie called DOOMSDAY has been out recently, anyway i am engoying SMALLVILLE, love the LEGION episode! Yay ; )
LEEE777 - 1/26/2009, 3:34 PM
Supermanreturns2,

What a brilliant response. I can't believe the sheer elegance of your retort. [MAJOR SARCASM] I have been put in my place. I don't know what I was thinking. Tom Welling must suck, because you think that I blow...BIGTIME. What an excellent point.

Your must be a genius SR2. You must have an IQ of 160. You are goddamn gifted private SR2! LOL (line from Forest Gump)

One last thing. BR is out Tom may not be in but BR is out. I can't wait to rub it in when they announce it. I am sure you will be quick to respond to with something like, "You suck, dude, he he ha hu, da!!" I can't wait.

Christopher Reeve is Superman
Superman4 - 1/28/2009, 7:02 PM
I think that it is fairly obvious that the majority of Superman fans want the Superman movie to have a bold fresh start. It is ime to re-educate people about Supermans origins and then go into his eventual move to Metropolis.
With that said, it is time to do a complete re-make of Superman. A good suggestion is to get a character who is ruggedly handsome and can still project the nerdy Clark Kent look.
An actor like John Cena would be the ticket. He can look nerdy, and then be very imposing as a Superman. Take a clue form the Cartoon Superman. He is big, rugged, handsome, and not too young. He appears to be in his late 20's or early thirties. He is a very mature Superman.
The Superman of the comics would not have a child out of wedlock. That was a bad decsion. It did not project a good example. : ))
r15bocop - 2/8/2009, 2:19 AM
yeah ruth was bloody awful i'd much prefer tom welling as superman on the silver screen!
Lee Burns - 2/19/2009, 2:19 PM
Yes :thumbs ,,, Christopher Reeve's is SUPERMAN an forever will be!!! But i think ROOTH'S a close second!!!! Close your eyes an see ROOTH VS DOOMSDAY on the BIG SCREEN!!!! ; )

LEEE777 - 2/24/2009, 3:21 AM
I like Tom Welling for the small screen - if you put him on the Big Screen as Clark/Superman, you just end up confusing a bunch of people who only watch Smallville. The show takes some liberties with the mythology and storylines, and that works for the show - but leave it out of the movies.

Brandon Routh defintly needs to do a bit of work on the Superman side of the character (as he's got the Clark side nailed down), but I think he's got it in him. The problem with Superman Returns wasn't the acting, it was the storyline (or lack thereof). Get the right story/plot/script behind it and there's no reason that Superman movies can't kick ass once again.
CharlieCB - 2/27/2009, 1:42 PM
CharlieCB, you said it. It's as simple as that.
P.S., tenaciousbt, regarding this subject-your opinion will forever, BLOW... BIGTIME!
SupermanReturns2 - 2/28/2009, 3:57 PM
SR2,

Once again you pulled an amazing bit of writing out of your hat. I bow to your brilliance. NOT!!!! BR is out. I will be here when they announce it and you will hear my opinion, and then you can BLOW ME...BIGTIME!!!!

LOSER!!!!
tenaciousbt - 3/1/2009, 6:18 PM
so much hostility. charliecb has it right, though. no doubt about it.
superman78 - 3/2/2009, 2:49 PM
Brandon Routh was a decent Christopher Reeve impersonator at best. Just because he was the first to play Superman on the big screen since Chris doesn't mean he is right. I mean hell Christopher Reeves said that in his eyes he was passing the torch to Tom Welling when he appeared on Smallville. Tom is also the most accurate depiction of the current comic book Superman. Plus if they reboot they won't use Routh. Just like they didn't use Eric Bana in the Incredible Hulk. And if they don't reboot they will have a hell of a time getting people to go see it after that shiat of a movie Superman Returns!
LastSon1027 - 3/3/2009, 11:27 AM
LastSon, that should be your LAST COMMENT. Lol. Chris Reeve was great as Supes in 1&2, but even HE fell off with 3& God Awful 4! (Which, BTW, he had a hand in the story) major crap!!! That's what he left us with-and distant memories of what once was. Brandon Routh wasn't so much a Reeve clone-more or less a really nice, exceptable interpretation of the man of steel for a new generation. I'll say it again, originally when I saw SR in the theater, the audience applauded when the film finished. That was approval right there. If they didn't like it, the reaction would have been grossly different. After seeing subsequent films like Spiderman II and Batman begins, THEN people realized SR could have been sooo much more. It didn't suck, it just wasn't comic book enough-a lot like Ang Lee's Hulk. I'll still say Singer had intentions of amping the action bigtime in a sequel, but he did that going into the first film with a green lit future. Like everyone else that makes a superhero film now, they'll be judged on TDK, and Iron Man, as the way to go, even if it doesn't suit a particular character. Honestly to me, Edward Norton's Incredible Hulk is actually the way to go overall... Who didn't enjoy seeing Hulk kill people; those spanish hoods and soldiers chasing Banner in the warehouse, and battle Abomination for the majority of the finale?
SupermanReturns2 - 3/5/2009, 3:59 PM
LastSon1027,

I couldn't have said it better. Right on!!!

SR2,

I can't believe I am going to say this but, I agree with you about Superman 3 and 4 although I love Richard Pryor's comedic performance in 3. I also agree that Ed Norton's Hulk was a good example of how a Superman movie could go, in terms of a believable Doomsday.

With that said I still think you need to come to grips with the fact that BR was just a sad and bad impersonator of Chris Reeve in SR. Sorry! Furthermore BR will not be in the next Superman movie. I know that hurts, but seriously it's true. Of course I know that anything is possible, hell I still have hope that Tom Welling could be in it, but he has about as much of a chance as BR at this point, which is 0.

tenaciousbt - 3/6/2009, 8:47 AM
GOOD!... GOOOOOOOOOOD!!!! You're fulfilling your destiny! tenaciousbt, now that you are learning the full power of the dark side,... lol. Hey I just want to see a great Superman film. It can be done, especially with the technology we have available today. It's total BS that a modern acceptable interpretation/treatment of the greatest superhero of them all is muddled in the wastelands while others, even DareDevil can come up. What in the hell is up at Warner's? It's not that damned hard to write a screenplay that would work with this character! Jim Caviezel as Superman, and as someone here mentioned before Diane Lane as Lois. 'Nuff Said!
SupermanReturns2 - 3/6/2009, 2:51 PM
What's this a SUPERMEN fight?!?! Can the TICK join in lol!!! Bwaahhahahhaha : D Oh yeah BRANDON gotta be in the next SUPERMAN (& DOOMSDAY) ; ) p.s. forget the kid, what kid lol : D
LEEE777 - 3/12/2009, 8:15 PM
Smallville is a terrible, Tom Welling is horrible, adn anybody who is truly a Superman fan knows it is the ga-yist tv show ever!
TYLERWINN - 3/13/2009, 5:07 AM
let me start by saying, tylerwinn, have you ever even watched Smallville??? so far I have to say its the ONLY Superman t.v. show that has ANYTHING to do with the comic universe. yes they do take some liberties here & there with it took me a while to get over but in the big picture they are the only comic based show(not just Superman) I've ever seen that has anything like a comic feel to it. I mean did you see that Legion episode?? they've had Zod on there, Brainiac, they had that whole Justice League thing. any true Superman fan knows this show rulez!! I mean I'm a HUGE Superman fan, hell I learned to read on Superman comics & I think its 1 of the best overall shows on t.v. right now.
now that thats said I have to get in on this Routh Welling thing. SR2, sorry but, yes Routh IS just a Chris Reeve clone. if you have the 2 disc dvd( I got it before I saw the movie, I only get the 2 disc SE verions) Singer pretty much says Routh gets it cause hes a dead ringer for Reeve. fact, deal with it. & once again tenaciousbt is right, if they do do another film Routh IS out. I'ed say if I were you it's time to give it up, you lost, deal with it. now as for Welling....like I said I love Smallville, Welling dose a great job on the show, but thats the kicker. he does a great job on the show cause of the way they write the character. Smallville's Clark has to be both Clark Kent & Superman all at once, so that gives Welling plunty of room to work in. he doesn't have to worry about hamming it up for Clark then being bold & dareing & brave as Supes. as a matter of fact that was one of the things about the show it took me a while to get used to, the fact that Clark wasn't a nerd boy. I mean I understand why they have it that way & its fine its just I don't know if I could see Welling pulling off a fully nered out Clark, especialy after 8 seasons. but it any case I think he would only be cool for a movie if they were doing a reboot, witch would be kinda pointless since thats pretty much what Smallville is, an updated origins story. I really don't know who would be best for the tights next time around but I do have to say Shaman had a post on here not too long ago(SR2 refrinced it in a post) where he nominated Jim Caviezel & I think that would work except he's got a really small frame so I don't know. but whatever happens I pray they act as if "Returns" NEVER happened. & no SR2 I'm not saying that cause all the good comic movie that came after it I'm saying it cause it was just a terrible idea from the start. Singer might as well have named it Superman The Stalker, & don't get me started on the kid
johan02 - 3/16/2009, 10:40 AM
when people are truthful w/ themselves
superman comics are garbage unless
he dies, or becomes the communist ruler of the world.
i know that is an unfair statement, because
i haven't read as many superman comics as...
good comics, so complain all you want.
he always has a new power that he couldn't figure out before he got beat down,
superman has retarded villains,
and why the kalibak does he only have to come his hair to the other side and lose his glasses to change.
i do however love the ninety's cartoon and smallville (no matter how much i don't want to admit it). superman is awesome, his comics are lame.
Godl1ng - 3/17/2009, 7:32 PM
I really liked Red Son Which Godl1ng refers too. The All Star superman series really brought me around to liking superman for the first time. Even though the first superman movie was a little cheesy, i really liked it and thought it did a good job. This last movie was beautiful visually but the plot stank. I felt like I had watched that movie before. Kryptonite is the fall back for every Superman plot. Use the plot from All Star Superman where his strength becomes his weakness or something different. I say no to a darker superman and to Brandon's stale version of the character.
curiositytom - 3/26/2009, 10:21 PM
SUPERMAN : DOOMSDAY!!!! ROUTH VS VIN DIESEL!!!!

Jokin' about the VIN part! ; )
LEEE777 - 4/6/2009, 2:01 PM

LOIS = small cameo role only when SUPERMAN'S dying in her arms at the end!!! Kid what kid??? Kids forgotten about lol!!! : D
LEEE777 - 4/6/2009, 2:03 PM
Has there been any cameo for batman in smallville.....just asking????????
alexcharme2099 - 4/29/2009, 2:22 AM
@ alexcharme 2099 no. and there won't be for legal reasons.

I think either Brandon or tom could work, but i think they need to choose between the two. i think bringing in a third actor for the same character would be too much. that being said, i don't think Tom would do the part.
valeriesghost - 4/29/2009, 12:01 PM
I agree with SR2. First of all Superman Returns was not bad. It was a good movie. I too experienced the same reaction in the moview theatre after the movie..everyone applauded. Then later after bigtime moview reviewers said not so great things about the move then everyone I know said that it was not a good movie. But honestly the movie was good, Brandon was Awesome , it just wasnt a Dark Knight or Iron Man level film. But then no other major comic movie has been. So do I think they can redeem themselves. Of Course its SUPERMAN afterall. He's only the greatest super hero of all time only matched by Wonder Woman. So yes Superman can be redeemed. If they make a new movie in a totally new direction ( acting as if the first one was never made) that is fine as long as they keep Brandon. I like Smallville but really for the character of Superman you can just throw that name around on any old actor. You need one who both can act and brings presence to the character. Just for the record Reeves then widow before she passed gave Brandon her blessing as he looked and acted almost exactly like Reeves. Yes he can improve on the Superman side of his character cause he has Kent down perfectly but really for new generations of kids and old fans of SUPERMAN aka Reeves this guy is a dead ringer. HE is modern day Reeves and that's who SUPERMAN was...Christopher Reeves.

If they were to make a SR 2 then they can still save the story by getting a better director that understands who Superman the legend is and still using Brandon. Hands down no matter what they need to you SUPERMAN as SUPERMAN and in 2009 Superman's name is Brandon Rothe. He has all the elements just needs better movie directing. And I do believe that he can act up to the level of Iron Man or TDK.....
Ilikecomicmovies - 5/7/2009, 5:15 PM
smallville is as good as it gets thers is nothing remotly close to how great of an adaptaion of a comicbook to many haters out there that probally never wacthed the show
KingCold420 - 5/8/2009, 4:17 PM
I like Smaville, but I wish they would post some information about the next superman MOVIE on this site, you know, given the name of the website and all. If this was comicbookTVSERIES.com, I could understand. I WANT INFO ON THE NEXT SUPRMAN MOVIE.
SuperMovieBuff - 5/10/2009, 11:56 PM
Tom has already said no to wearing tights. i wanted him to be Supes on the big screen to but i just dont see it happening. SR wasnt terrible but it followed the same storyline of evey superman movie and didnt have enough action. i also wasnt really convinced Brandon was Superman because his Superman seemed just as nerdy as his clark did i think superman needs to be strong, calm, and slow to anger while clark needs to be the geek who gets ignored and rejected by lois. what they need to do is show superman really pissed and then have him take on someone like darkseid or doomsday so finally people can see just how strong he is.
crazyish - 5/16/2009, 5:03 PM
Smallville's version of Superman/Clark Kent is at the same point as current comics. Now that New Krypton has been created in the comics, what does Superman do? He QUITS! What did Clark pretty much do in the finale? QUIT! What did they quit on, you may ask? Their human sides and embrace full on Kryptonian heritage.

Welling nor Routh could make it into the next Superman movie. I really don't think that they'll attempt at another for at least 10 years.

SupermanReturns2 - 5/21/2009, 10:11 AM
Ok, I just got done reading all the comments and there are a few facts that ya'll failed to realize on both Smallville and Superman Returns:

On Superman Returns
Like most of the comic book movies that have recently been coming out, they are set to be trilogy movies, so this is planning to become a trilogy. Look they did a second Batman (Dark Knight) so they must do a second Superman so that there can be a crossover movie with Superman/Batman movie (easter egg can be seen in "I Am Legend" movie)

On Smallville
I agree with some of ya'll and say that Welling can never be a true blue tights Superman, he just doesn't have the................umpf! for it. Plus it has been stated by Jerry Siegel in the 2007 San Diego Comic-con that "Smallville" is really a ultimate revamp, just like what Marvel did with anything in the Ultimate universe. Now CrimsonPhantom mentioned the New Krypton storyline but any real Smallville watcher and fan should know that they are about to do a current storyline, EXCEPT no Superman, just Kal-El...who else got goosebumps at the final scene and you heard ZOD!!! and the giant Kryptonian Z with someone standing in the middle of it. So I can't wait for Season 9 and yes, CW has confirmed that there will a season 9 because they moved it to Fridays to compete with the ABC and Fox timeslots.

To the idiot that said John Cena should be Superman should hold a hand in front of his face and slap himself over and over and over again, please do not give that loser any more ammunition he already thinkds he's a Marine, don't let him think he can be Superman too. Thank God he turned down Captain American!

Brandon Routh is perfect for the modern person wanting to know the Superman universe.
sirpeck - 5/24/2009, 3:56 PM
Thanks for your comments, sirpeck.
SupermanReturns2 - 5/25/2009, 11:09 PM
Hey you MONTAVIUS! But what ugly people....completely disagree with you, smallville has been part of my life from the first chapter. And I will say one thing, Superman Returns was not a success that was expected because the actor who was chosen simply has no charisma, he is very nice but he just did not charm the public. If you've feel just one of the chapters of smallville then welcome to the club, if not, what the hell you'r doing on this page, just transmitting your bad mood. Tom Welling was the best and fresh face that Warner Brother could have found and he is better every season. I can understand whether you're not a faithful follower of smallville but I think you are jealous about him ups.., if Tom would have been Superman in Superman Returns I assure you that it success would have been other. How do you see it?
girlofsteel - 6/25/2009, 7:59 PM
i agree
FrankCastle1 - 10/25/2009, 5:01 PM
The reason Superman Movies have all sucked, and yes, they have all sucked, is because it is impossible to have The Boyscout go up against a truely dark character. And you can't make Superman dark, because he is the ultimate boyscout. He is too good to combat someone (like Doomsday) that is the ultimate evil on the big screen. There are things you can get away with in a comic book that you can't get away with in a movie. I would like to believe that we learned that from the Watchmen, but only time will tell. That's why they have stuck to Lex, and why Lex has always seemed a little (okay, maybe a lot) campy. They have done a much better job with Smallville, but I have to agree that I'm not sure Tom Welling is a good choice for the big screen. And I'm not sure if I dislike Brandon Roth because the writing/directing was so bad in Superman Returns, or if he just isn't the right guy for the job. Perhaps there is a better choice out there than just these two. I think it would be better to go up against a different villian; perhaps brainiac, or bizzaro would be a better choice than a campy Lex Luthor and his stupid sidekicks. Lex Luthor is a brilliant mastermind, and that just doesn't seem to make the transition to the big screen.

if the wb was smart it would try to make a superman reboot to compete with all the upcoming marvel movies and to back up the upcoming green lantern movie. thus eventually leading up to a justice league movie.
cslepko13 - 11/27/2009, 9:44 PM
fans take a look at this idea http://www.comicbookmovie.com/news/?a=14100
matt28 - 1/22/2010, 1:56 PM
They really need to make another superman movie, DC needs to get the board out of their butt and start making movies. Marvel doesn't fool around, look at all the movies they put out. I agree superman vs Doomsday movie, lots of action fighting, less romance, we all know Lois and Supes have a thing going on, get over it that is last century news. Brandon Routh is a perfect Superman, they should keep him.
superscoutmom - 1/26/2010, 4:50 PM
superscoutmom @ Sorry to say Brandon Routh was nothing like the boy scout: a stalking, impregnating Supes from Superman Returns sounds more like Bizzaro. I'd rather see a REBOOT with Superman Prime with Tom Welling.
