It's been reported that the Russo Brothers are in talks to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the near future, & Joe Russo addressed the possibility when asked about Secret Wars earlier this week.

The Russo Brothers had a busy few years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it's no wonder they decided to take a break after Avengers: Endgame. Since then, Joe and Anthony have helmed both Cherry and The Gray Man (the latter is expected to be released next year), while also producing a tonne of great movies through their AGBO production banner.

Earlier this week, Joe made time to attend the world premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home and was asked about potentially returning to the MCU for that long-rumoured Secret Wars movie.

"One of these days. We'll have to see how this all shakes out. I don't know what they're gonna do with all these characters!" Pushed on a possible MCU return, Joe added: "Look, we love those guys, and I can't say one way or the other, but I'd work with them in a heartbeat. It's the best work experience of our careers. They're like family to us. We love this material and we love the fans."

It has been reported that the Russos are in talks with Marvel Studios for another movie, and if it is Secret Wars, you have to believe it would be bigger than even the last two Avengers movies. After all, an adaptation of that comic series would more than likely assemble the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men, but whatever happens, you have to believe we won't see it become a reality until deep into Phase 5 at the earliest.

It's kinda complicated to think of these events without caps, IM and all the other to be retired heroes.
Spike101
Spike101 - 12/16/2021, 6:22 AM
@Fogs - hmm with the multiverse anything I’d possible I guess.

@Spike101 - I could see it as something they do for a 20th or 25th anniversary of the MCU. The de-aging tech will be even more refined, there will be more heroes to bang together, and it's likely that a lot of the actors who feel burned out now are going to be refreshed and eager to play with the characters (as multiverse variants).

It's hard to imagine many of them would want to stay for a longer haul than just one movie or maybe a trilogy, but it's possible we could see a kind of "Golden Age Happy Ending" for the MCU universe as we know it, with our characters getting every bit of resolution we could ask. (And then possibly some kind of reboot-continuation that effectively operates like another reality, but is really an excuse to wipe start again from scratch.)

@Fogs - Multiverse. recasts. Dead characters get taken to "Battleworld" or whatever right before they die, like they did with Doc Ock, Goblin etc. in NWH.

@IronMan616 @Spike101 - Multiverse? Sure. Recasts? They don't seem to be very fond of it.

@Spock0Clock's de-aging take is a good guess, probably.
Spike101
Spike101 - 12/16/2021, 11:45 AM
@Spock0Clock - That would make a lot of sense, build to secret wars long term but only once we have the FF & X-Men established. Then use the multiverse or time travel to fetch missing characters to save the universe once again. It’s Marvel - any is possible.
Spike101
Spike101 - 12/16/2021, 11:47 AM
@Fogs - Agreed. They seem to have a policy of just retiring characters at the moment but that can’t really be sustainable as they will a) run out of characters and b) these are not just characters but assets worth huge amounts of money. I’d say we’ll see Tony, Steve and Nat back before too long.
Fogs

@Spike101 - Yeah. Not sure if we'll see a full length story with them but I also believe they'll briefly reappear in flashbacks, holo messages or variants.

@Spock0Clock - Couldn't have said it better myself. Keeping in mind the immense power that The Beyonder has, they could totally pull characters from their prime to participate in his Secret War and then pop them right back into their own continuity afterward like nothing had happened. Throw in some memory erasing of the whole event and BAM! no messing up the continuity. Like, imagine if the Beyonder just plucked a bunch of heroes from the last battle in Endgame. Just before they all start to fight. And then BAM! they are back instantly so no one knows anything happened. PLUS it gives the Russos a chance to revisit Endgame. Naturally, they will want to wait to do something of this scale until they've introduced more characters to the MCU, i.e. the F4, X-Men, etc. as well as more villains, i.e. Dr. Doom, etc. But still, the idea that they could just insert Secret Wars into literally any point in time in the MCU without it affecting the timeline is pretty cool. Jus' sayin' :)

The Russo Brothers have more than proved their worth in the MCU. Let them do whatever they wish at any time they wish. I'm confident it will be amazing whatever or whenever it happens.

I'm kinda hoping they make it a two-parter based on both Secret Wars runs. First the Beyonder, and in the second Doom steals the power and takes over.

@bkmeijer - And between a year of Disney + series set in the Battleworld...
BraxtonHicks
BraxtonHicks - 12/16/2021, 11:56 AM
@PEDROM - there definitely needs to be a lead up to Secret Wars and it be a two parter. Only way to do it justice... use the multiverse to pick and choose your reasoning for each hero. Pick the best you can from all the marvel movies from Blade to Endgame.

I just don't understand why Marvel is in such a rush with introducing new heroes.

I'd be perfectly fine with a ''small'' Avengers movie, made of Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Wasp, Captain Marvel, Black Panther and Giant-Man.

Instead, we are getting Shang-Chi, Blade and another dozen characters.

Why so soon? Soon the characters will run out, and judging Marvel will be making 4 movies a year, it will probably run out of material in 10 - 20 years (which sounds frightening, having a franchise for 30 years, but so what).

On the other hand, the coming of Mutants definitely gives MCU another 10 years of X-Movies and tv shows (X-Men, X-Force, Wolverine, Marauders, Cable etc.)

bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 12/16/2021, 7:59 AM
@UXASIS - I kinda agree. I'm not sure if we'll see War Machine, Hawkeye, Thor and Hulk again (maybe only supporting), but then we still have Captain Marvel, Strange, Captain America, Shang-Chi, Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Wasp, Scarlet Witch and She-Hulk that can fill out the main Avengers.

Making two teams is something I might be in favor of if all 13 of those characters are gonna appear. Blade, Moon Knight and Black Knight I don't expect to be there though.
UXASIS
UXASIS - 12/16/2021, 8:17 AM
@bkmeijer - Splitting them into teams is basically the smartest idea.

That is how Infinity War managed to have so many characters.

I just wouldn't put them all in the same one Avengers movie, but I'd split them and make different factions of Avengers - Secret Avengers, New, Young, Mighty, etc.

Some would deal with space stuff, others with international incidents, and so on.

Blade and Black Knight (perhaps even Strange, Wanda, and Moon Knight) will probably be in Midnight Sons, which is technically not an Avengers team, but they still kinda are ''Magical Avengers''.

Or there was a new team in recent comics, called Strikeforce, with Blade as their leader (and Winter Soldier) where they were hunting magical aliens on Earth.
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 12/16/2021, 8:27 AM
@UXASIS - I'm kinda hoping for a West Coast Avengers show with characters like Hawkeye, Wasp, Ant-Man, Shang-Chi and maybe Captain Marvel and War Machine as power houses.

Whatever they do, I do hope we'll get Captain America leading the movie team (as one team, because although splitting them up is probably smart, I do kinda wanna see one team too). If that means seeing less characters, so be it.
UXASIS
UXASIS - 12/18/2021, 11:46 AM
@bkmeijer - It would be very strange to have two Captains (America and Marvel) on one team.

Sam is probably a better leader than Carol, but still him wielding a shield is totally unearned, imo.

He's a good character, he's fun, but has he even had an arc in all his previous movies?

In CA: Winter Soldier he had his biggest arc, but after that, he was just a sidekick with cool one-liners.

But FaWS made me like him very much.

The worse it is with Bucky, who came from one of the most badass Marvel villains to a pure wingman, and his arc in FaWS was very rushed.

Boy, do I miss his Winter Soldier times. That one scene in FaWS gave me chills. I wish he fought Black Widow in her movie because that would've been much more interesting than lame Budapest talk.

bkmeijer2 - 12/18/2021, 12:33 PM
@UXASIS - CATWS is still the best movie in my opinion.

I don't mind two captains though, given that its good food for some Marvel jokes

I’m not interested unless the big three are in it to be honest along with some X-men and the FF. Can’t really do it right without the combined rogues gallery either.

The MCU hasn't been the same without the Russos. Their version of Spider-Man/Peter Parker is still the best out of all of his MCU appearances.
