STAR WARS: Disney Has Unveiled The First Footage Of Its REAL Lightsaber In Action

We recently found out that Disney Parks was working on a real-life, working Lightsaber, and to celebrate Star Wars Day, we have a first look at some footage of the iconic Jedi weapon in action...

Last month, we learned that Disney had created a real-life, working lightsaber as a prop for its upcoming Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser Disney World attraction, and we now have a first look at the Jedi weapon in action.

Disney Parks Chairman Josh D'Amaro unveiled the lightsaber as part of the "Special Look Inside Disney Parks" virtual event in April, but no photos or video were made available... until now.

To celebrate Star Wars Day (May the fourth be with you), Disney Parks has shared a brief video of an actor in Rey garb igniting the laser-sword.

Of course, the saber's "blade" is not actually a laser (you won't be disarming Walrus Man with this baby), but we're sure you'll agree that the overall effect is quite impressive, and it does resemble a real lightsaber.

We're still not sure if this will eventually become available for the public to purchase (if it ever does, expect to fork out a lot of money to get your hands on one), but for now, fans will have to wait until 2022's Galactic Starcruiser attraction to see characters "wield the new lightsaber, which was created by Walt Disney Imagineering to create dramatic in-person moments previously only seen in films or shows."

“When the Launch Pod’s airlock slides open, you’ll take your first step into a galaxy far, far away as Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser comes to life all around you," the blurb continues. "During your stay aboard this glamorous ship, you may interact with an eclectic group of characters both familiar and new, possibly including the starcruiser’s strong and charismatic captain, a plucky ship’s mechanic and a galactic superstar who can captivate an entire room with the crook of one jewel-encrusted purple Twi’lek finger.”

cool for collectors and super-fans, I guess.
I was never really interested in recreating the magic of SW for our world though. I'm more fascinated with recreating that magic on screen.

This toy has been out for 15 years. 🤣

@WruceBayne - No it [frick]ing has not. Not with that retraction.

@WruceBayne - no...

@Noncomforming - you seem pretty upset. And I guess the toy my son has might have a slower retraction rate. I’m sorry, I thought all nonfunctional, prop toy light sabers with retractable plastic blades were all the same. Excuse my ignorance 🤨

@WruceBayne - As long as you're admitting it's ignorance, because they are not the same thing 🤷🏽‍♂️

@WruceBayne - maybe sarcasm is lost in he, but ignorance is way too present in you

@WruceBayne - No it's not lost on me, I'm just accepting what you said as literal since it's the truth. You're stating the fact of how ignorant about the topic you are, as if it's sarcasm but it's reality 🤷🏽‍♂️

@lordSTALE - i think he was implying that he’s okay with being ignorant about the specifics of children’s toys.

I mean hyping this up in headlines as a real lightsaber is silly. It’s the same toy with a slightly cooler retract mechanism.

@connorblaze - No in a now deleted reply, he said the ignorance bit was sarcasm and it was lost on me

I don't think people realize how difficult and complicated the science is behind this. I have no idea how it works, but to create light that is visible in a narrow field is science fiction type stuff.

@Itwasme - the plastic container is probably retractable and is already lit up as it comes out. Anything else would defy the laws of nature.

@JackRussoff - It’s a significant improvement on any existing toy in effect. As they say, they wanted a physical prop for stage shows and Park attractions that would look like a lightsaber igniting... the blade extending up from the handle as it does in the films.

To this point, you either had nesting blade segments that could collapse into the handle but the fact that the blade was segmented was pretty obvious, or you had a solid, always extended blade that could light up. This is a solid, uniform looking blade that nonetheless seems to extend to 2x the length of the hilt, at least.

My question is whether this is done with some kind of slight-of-hand style misdirect that would be great for a dramaticly staged moment like the above but little else or whether it really does compact fully into that hilt somehow.

@Chewtoy @Itwasme - it won't cut anything, but it is pretty clever:

@bkmeijer - Very cool, thank you for sharing. I thought it might be something like that. Light goes on indefinitely until it hits something, so to have that control is remarkable - on multiple levels. This is great to show how they limit the length, but even the width is impressive.

Still people are complaining it won't cut a tank in half....

@Itwasme - I'm still one of those complaining lol.

Anyway, doubt we'll ever get a true lightsaber. The Hacksmith is worth checking out in the meantime though
