We've been wondering how the heck Stephen Lang's Avatar villain Miles Quaritch returns in Avatar: The Way of Water, and we now have details and a first look image from the actor himself. Check it out...

Avatar's big bad was Stephen Lang's Miles Quaritch, a sinister military commander in the RDA who wanted to wipe out the Na'vi and impose humanity's rule over Pandora. Ultimately, he got his just desserts in a battle against Jake that culminated with Neytiri placing a couple of well-deserved arrows in his chest.

From the second Lang's involvement in Avatar: The Way of Water was announced, fans of the franchise have wondered how he returns. Now, we finally know how the villain has managed to live to fight another day.

The actor will return as Quaritch, albeit in a new body. As you can see from the still below, Lang's character has been given a new Na'vi body that, according to the actor during an interview with Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com) means he's "bigger, he’s bluer, he’s pissed off."

"But there may possibly be an aspect of humility. When you take two Na’vi arrows in the chest, that’s gonna have some kind of effect on you," he adds. "[He] was always a character who moved in straight lines and at right angles. But now he is as lithe as they come. He can move with the same kind of cunning and feral quality that any of the Na’vi can."

Apparently, the RDA has found a way to transfer the memories of human soldiers into "Recoms," Na'vi bodies that now house their consciousness. That puts the organisation's forces on an equal footing with Pandora's residents, and producer Jon Landau says, "They are coming back with an armada to take back the prized possession that they lost."

Now, they're stripping the resources from the planet's oceans, and with a manmade city and the ability to create weapons faster than ever before, this war is clearly about to heat up...

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by Avatar helmer James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, Avatar: The Way of Water stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet.

To whet audiences' appetites, Disney/20th Century Studios will re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23. As for Avatar: The Way of Water, that arrives in theaters worldwide on December 16.

@MrDandy - they also said Sigourney Weaver is coming back as a new Navi too.

Maybe the Earthmother thing is reincarnating anyone who dies on the planet

@MrDandy - Well, we knew something was going to be different about him and now we get the reveal he's got a new suit. We've talked at length how the film cherry picks human conflicts in the past, but this may be a way of fleshing out the Navi and potentially allowing humanity to sort of bridge that gap between them. Will they do it? That remains to be seen, they're humans. We've only seen Jake commit himself to that way of life, but I wonder if the military doesn't get vilified for their actions or more humans have a change of heart as the films progress. Also, I hope unobtainium was just an inside joke on the part of Ribisi's character and that the element has an actual name going forward.

@HeeroG - Haha, to be fair though, he’s done some solid drama work over the years. Especially in Manhunt: Unabomber. I’d like to see more of that from him on the big screen rather than the action lead stuff they tried pushing him with.

Huh, didn't knew humans were gonna be back in thus full force. Was kinda expecting a Na'vi civil war of sorts.

Anyway, Lang was a solid villain, so him returning is fun to see.

Let the trolls roll on in...

Bringing back Lang should be pretty fun. I really enjoyed his presence in the first film. Having him back and on an equal playing field is going to lead to some pretty badass chases and fights I have a feeling. I get why the humans would want to bring him back if they have the tech. The man has seen first hand what the Na'vi are capable of, and he was a pretty brutal force to be reckoned with. Now he has revenge on his mind, a new body, and a better understanding of his enemy. Shit should hit the fan.

@RedFury - not to mention the technology is there. If anything it should be an easier process transferring consciousness directly into the body rather than the wireless connection they had in the first avatar.
RedFury
RedFury - 7/5/2022, 2:53 PM
@Origame - Yeah that's very true. They were clearly only a few steps away from it in the first one. Makes sense within the sci-fi world they're in that transferring consciousness is the logical next step.

It's like how in each new iteration of the Alien franchise we see new and better androids appear. It only makes sense that the humans in avatar will continue to advance their tech as the decades move forward. Which actually makes me excited to see what Cameron thinks of next in the film's to come.

@RedFury -
The simple reality is... it did not need to be him. He had a little bit of connection with the main character from the previous film but it'd arguably make more sense for the main villain to be a member of the Navi who views Jake Sully as an impostor, not a true Navi and a long-term threat, using the arrival of the humans in this film as a method of rallying support against Jake.

Narratively that'd mean Jake would need to prove himself as a Navi and fully take the decision to stand against Earth as a whole - as opposed to just a random small military faction. This could inevitably lead in a later film to an interplanetary war of the Navi Vs the Humans.
