"I will take what is mine... with fire and blood."

Before Daenerys Targaryen fell victim to the madness that's plagued her family for generations and set out to reclaim the Iron Throne by any means necessary in Game of Thrones, her ancestors were the rulers of Westeros, and the monarchy was generally regarded as fair and benevolent - until civil war erupted and plunged the kingdom into chaos.

HBO's prequel series, House of the Dragon, will chart the rise and fall of House Targaryen, and this new poster spotlights Emma D’Arcy (Wanderlust) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen along with one of the fire-breathing beasts of the title.

In addition, the first official tie-in merchandise for the show has been revealed, which includes Funko POPs of the main characters and Syrax the dragon.

We should get another trailer before the show premieres this August, but for now, check out the new poster along with the first teaser below.

"The prequel series finds the Targaryen dynasty at the absolute apex of its power, with more than 15 dragons under their yoke. Most empires—real and imagined—crumble from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their slow fall begins almost 193 years before the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks with a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne. But when Viserys later fathers a son, the court is shocked when Rhaenyra retains her status as his heir, and seeds of division sow friction across the realm."

House of the Dragon stars Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders) as King Viserys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One) as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy (Wanderlust) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Prince Daemon Targaryen.

I really want to care about this but knowing where the world leads makes it feel like investing in this is all for nothing.

Miss the old HBO - Sopranos, OZ, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Entourage, Band of Brothers ... quality and originality only. But all good things come to an end.

I don't really care for this show yet. Out of all upcoming fantasy shows, I probably look forward most to the Witcher S3. Not that convinced yet of Rings of Power after Wheel of Time.

Do gotta say though, the costume department sure already is delivering with this show. D'arcy looks great as Rhaenyra

@rebellion - yeah. But don't get me wrong here, that's not high on my list of general anticipation either. Just out of the upcoming fantasy shows

@rebellion - witcher is great. Don't get the hate for it. Well apart from the idiots crying about it departing from the source material while praising the games, which you know, also departed from the source material and retconned characters too. But honestly would like to know what you don't like about it? Majority of the complaints I see are around what I already mentioned.

@Rosraf - Willow! I knew there was one I forgot. Quite curious about that too. We've seen Netflix and Amazon try fantasy, so I really look forward to what Disney is gonna do with it
