LUKE CAGE Showrunner Reveals Why Mahershala Ali's Cottonmouth Was Killed Off So Soon LUKE CAGE Showrunner Reveals Why Mahershala Ali's Cottonmouth Was Killed Off So Soon

Luke Cage was cancelled by Netflix after only two seasons, and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker has now revealed why Mahershala Ali's Cottonmouth was killed off so early on during the first run of episodes...

The first seven episodes of Luke Cage were among the best you could hope to find on television, and much of that can be credited to Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali's incredible portrayal of Cottonmouth. One of the best villains to ever appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or Marvel Television Universe), his death served as both a genuine shock and turning point for the Netflix series.

Unfortunately, it wasn't a positive shift, as the quality of the series drastically declined from there thanks to the introduction of Diamonback, and the decision to leave Luke comatose for a handful of episodes. Many blame the death of Cottonmouth for this decline, and question why he was killed so soon.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker explained that they only actually had Ali for those seven episodes, and that was why he agreed to star in the Netflix series. As a result, Coker's hands were tied behind his back to some extent, though there's still no faulting Ali's work as Cottonmouth - even if the show could have made better use of him as a big bad.

On the plus side, he is on his way to the MCU after being cast as Blade, an announcement which was made during last year's San Diego Comic-Con. Unfortunately, there's still no word on when and where his debut will take place, and COVID-19 has likely delayed it regardless.

Big mistake, could have been on par with Daredevil and Jessica Jones season 1.

Could have spread his appearances out more, not like Kingpin and Killgrave had big roles in every episode, or if not that should have just let Maria take over. Diamondback was just too cartoony and 1 dimensional

@dracula - Diamondback reminds me of Sho'nuff from The Last Dragon.

@LukeCage2155 - is that a good thing?

@dracula - Sho Nuff was an excellent villain in The Last Dragon.

@dracula - To spread them out would have required shooting them out of sequence and the actor obviously wanted them shot sequentially. So that wasn't going to happen.

Cottonmouth was goat. Same as Bushmaster. For a mostly mediocre show, LC had some good stuff.

As good as Mahershala Ali was, they should never have compromised the story for the sake of an actor.
Get someone else, make it proper.

I always wondered if it was something like that. He seemed like an overly fast rising star to be doing the show at the time, not to mention talented as hell. Might have been worth it to get him for half a season rather than someone else in the role for a whole season.

Just make it a 7 episode season then, it already had big pacing issues

@tmp3 - Marvel wasn't interested in anything that short as it made the shows too expensive.

He also said he had regrets about Diamondback. Wanted him to kill Reva. I get the whole blaxploitation villain thing they were doing with him but after Cottonmouth it came off way too cartoony in comparison.

@BlackBeltJones - Dude felt like a Power Rangers villain, lmao

@tmp3 - not that who they got is a bad actor but they should’ve casted Wood Harris and paid him to be Avon but with an affinity for knives (something DB has in the comics). That’s who I wanted as DB when the show was announced.

Cheo already had a few former Wire actors already.

@BlackBeltJones - For me, Cottonmouth was a Nino Brown rip off, and Diamondback and reminds me of Sho Nuff from The Last Dragon.

@LukeCage2155 - Cottonmouth was very Nino Brown to me too. Wow someone else caught it too haha. But IT WORKED.

Also, obviously Ali brought his own gravitas and charisma to it. I think few people know Nino and Cottonmouth was a modern take and or version for folks.

DB was Sho Nuff lmao

Another reason could be that that show sucks?

Why on earth would you compromise the story for such a solvable reason? I'm sure there were other great actors. Not that it wouldve made a huge difference. It was a really flawed show unfortunately

Ali is going to make an awesome Blade. I can easily see the MCU making Dracula his antagonist in the movie, and sugarcoat much of the violence.

Can’t wait to see Ali as Blade

Luke Cage was cancelled after a great season 2 and people still complain about Cottonmouth participation on the show, c'mon guys, move on. Ali is now Blade, let's see if he make a great representation of the character.
