It's already been confirmed that She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will feature cameo appearances from several Marvel Comics characters (including Charlie Cox's Daredevil), but it seems certain heroes and villains were off limits from the start.

While chatting to The Direct, She-Hulk creator and head writer Jessica Gao revealed that multiple characters were considered during the writing process that Marvel Studios told them were off the table.

"We wanted a lot of characters from the comics for fun situations where we could bring in a character and think of funny reasons why they would be in legal trouble," she said. "But there were a lot of characters that were from the comics that we couldn’t use either because of a rights issue, or there were a few times where it was because Marvel... all they would say is that they had other plans. And that’s all they would tell us. And then, we tried very, very hard to poke, and prod, and get a little bit more information. Of course, they wouldn’t tell us."

This type of thing must be very frustrating for a writer, but it sounds like not being allowed to introduce one specific hero and all related characters was particularly disappointing for Gao's team.

"But I will say, the one MCU character that really bummed out a lot of the writers in our room that we couldn’t use was Spider-Man and anyone involved around – like in the Spider-Man universe. Because we had so many Spider-Man fans in the room."

Since Sony Pictures technically hold the rights to Spider-Man, this isn't too surprising. Tom Holland's Web-Slinger has appeared in Marvel Studios projects in the past, of course, but this would seem to confirm that the new deal between the studios doesn't extend to TV.

Still, there's always a chance the Emerald Amazon and the Webhead will cross paths on the big screen one day! Check out a fun new Law and Order parody promo for She-Hulk below.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law follows Jennifer Walters as she navigates the complicated life of a single, 30-something attorney who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk. The nine-episode series welcomes a host of MCU vets, including Mark Ruffalo as Smart Hulk, Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/the Abomination, and Benedict Wong as Wong. The cast also includes Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, Jameela Jamil, Jon Bass and Renée Elise Goldsberry. Executive producers are Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Kat Coiro and Jessica Gao. Co-executive producers are Wendy Jacobson and Jennifer Booth.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is set to premiere on Disney+ on August 17 18.

A spiderman cameo would have been quite the expense. But a spiderman rogues cameo in this show could have been cool!
Imagine Mac Gargan, still tied up with felons. Serious as can be contrasted with she hulk's 4th wall breaking humor

If this is done right this could be the greatest show in the MCU.
Every episode a new case involving a different corner of the MCU and giving the opportunity to introduce new characters there

@Blergh - I think structurally it'll work better than most of the other shows. Almost all the other shows are structured like really long movies, which just makes it feel bloated and leads to episodes not having much individual weight. The episodic formula, while played out on TV, is a proven formula.

That is disappointing that they couldn’t add the likes of Spider-Man. The thing I thought was supposed to be great about Disney+ series of the MCU was they would include big screen characters. But I trust most of what Marvel Studios does so I guess it’s for a good reason.

This one looks like It'll be exactly what I want it to to be. Wacky hero nonsense mixed with lawyer stuff. Like Venture Bros in a way. I loved WandaVision but still wish they went harder on the weird. Ms.Marvel deviated too far from it's Jersey characters that were the heart of the show. She-Hulk looks fun.

I think the ''unlike anthing you've ever seen before'' line is probably the least effective in marketing in my opinion. Same with using it in reviews.

Hot take care, go ahead and don’t take my comment seriously. The way I look at it, phase 4 is mostly disappointing except for no way home. That’s obviously a very common opinion, but I will also give the caveat that I’m looking at consensus not personal opinion, my personal opinion says Multiverse of madness, Thor four, Wandavision, and ms marvel were good also. Anyway, back to the consensus, only no way home was great. But here’s the thing, Sony is ruining the best thing in marvel at the moment. Spider-Man is the best thing but the side characters are in a world that truly sucks and makes everything that marvel is doing look fantastic. Not only that, but they ruined some marvel plans. Now I won’t save marvel isn’t doing that on their own and here’s what I mean by that. Look at vulture and Mordo. Arguably Sony threw vulture off completely by making him less MCU and more SPUMCky. But going wit a variant Mordo and dropping a good thread was all marvel’s doing. But back to my point, the way home was also going to come out after Doctor Strange.

Nevertheless, the collaboration with Sony is still the best thing to happen in phase 4, and that’s troubling.

@TheWalkingCuban -

Wandavision was praised and won awards and fans loved it.

Shang chi kept the theaters alive when shit was locked down and is loved by audiences.

@AmazingFILMporg - Shang Chi was forgettable I said what I said!

It was good for a nap. Ultimately the sucker didn’t make much, 3 films under 500, very phase 1. To be expected sure after what we got before that, but money talks, and this movie walked

Vigor - 8/12/2022, 10:41 AM
@TheWalkingCuban - you guys are doing that whole "if it isn't great, it's horrible" thing again.

Ok sure these movies weren't infinity war or civil war or black panther good. But they were good. Why do we have to continue talking about phase 4 as if it was a dumpster fire. Revisionists history effect going on here?

I get that Thor 4 was VERY divisive. But don't let it taint the rest of phase 4 as if it was the defining phase 4 movie
