Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy has admitted to not being a hardcore Star Wars fan, and shares his hopes to deliver a real, grounded take on the Galaxy Far, Far Away with the upcoming Rogue One spinoff...

Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Deborah Chow, for example, are all die-hard Star Wars fans, which is why it makes sense for them to be in charge of shows like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, Andor's showrunner doesn't exactly count himself among those who eat, breathe, and sleep the iconic franchise.

Talking to SFX Magazine (via SFFGazette.com), Gilroy confessed that he's "not a fan fan" of Star Wars, though he didn't elaborate. However, we probably shouldn't cast too much doubt on his credentials as the filmmaker did co-write Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and that's considered one of the franchise's best movies.

Andor taking place around the same time as Star Wars Rebels and the Star Wars: Jedi video games has left fans eager to see some big character crossovers during the course of the show, but does Gilroy have the know-how to deliver? Luckily, it sounds like there's help on hand.

"Within Star Wars, within Wookiepedia, there’s got to be four or five levels of canon," he explains. "There’s film canon, cartoon canon, fan-fiction canon and all these different things - and for the larger issues we deal with [Star Wars Lore Advisor] Pablo Hidalgo."

It's hard to say what this means for the series, and while it's clearly going to be a very important chapter in the Star Wars mythos, it may also be largely standalone in nature. In other words, don't hold your breath for any huge cameos like Cal Kestis or the Rebels crew. Ultimately, for Gilroy, telling a "real" story proved to be most important to the showrunner.

"Our show is about ordinary people. They're behind the scenes, they’re going to build the road to the revolution. We’re really in the kitchen with these people – our people are back there washing dishes, so canon might be happening off stage, but what's happening for them is something completely different. That’s the overriding manifesto for our show - make it real."

Recently, Lucasfilm took to social media to share the release schedule for Andor. As you can see, we're getting three episodes on September 21 with the finale dropping on November 23.

It's going to be a busy couple of months for Star Wars fans, that's for sure!

I expect so much shaky cam and snap shots of people saying, "Oh my God it's Cassian Andor!" Also [frick] Pablo, fat hack

@bobevanz - I hate that. I know I'm the minority but all this grittiness doesn't fit SW IMO. Not a Rogue One fan and doubt I’ll like this one as well.

@Fogs - Right there with you. I actually fell asleep during Rogue One.

I think he means his life doesn't revolve around star wars. Kinda like Nolan being a fan of Batman but wasn't a diehard💁

I'll take it over taika waititi who can't even be bothered to watch the movies when working on star wars.

@Origame - I was shocked when I first read about it. I mean, FFS, she was a main character in the Prequels. Would have been funny if it were Keira Knightly becuase not many people may realise she was Padme's decoy, but forgetting Portman is tragic.

@Sabre81 - exactly. Like even my sister who hasn't seen star wars knows Natalie Portman was in the prequels. And it's hardly an obscure fact. She's one of the main characters.

@Origame - It's the oddest thing I've heard in such a long time. Working with an actress for a while and not knowing her full filmography and being assigned to a Star Wars project without at least knowing the films.

Don't need to a fan fan in my opinion, especially if there are also people working on the show that are. Better to have both that just one or none.

Think him bringing general movie/tv influences into the project might actually be better even, because otherwise we'd just end up with one long fan service show.

an outside-the-fandom perspective is exactly what SW needs from time to time

I was not a fan of Rogue One at all. It’s near the bottom of the pile for me along with Solo and The Last Jedi.

Not really excited for this, but I’ll watch it because I am a “fan fan” of Star Wars

@RichardGrayson - Rogue One for me is the fourth best Star Wars movie, definitely the best from Disney.

@RichardGrayson - There were some things I liked about it, including the way Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen) would use his faith in the "force", instead of just the Jedi's using the force as a focus of their faith. I have no idea if I worded that accurately.

The best religious films are made by those who aren’t devout i.e. The Last Temptation of Christ and The Prince of Egypt. Maybe it’ll be the same with Andor.
