Deadline reports that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug took a total of $8.5 million on its opening day in a number of international markets, putting it well on track to to at least do as well as - if not better than - 2012's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The first instalment opened to $84.6 million, before going on to gross a total of $303 million domestically. So far, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has grossed $2.8 million in France, and had the biggest opening of 2013 in countries like Holland, Belgium and Switzerland. Will you be checking it out tomorrow?

Hated the first one. Absolutely did not need to be broken up. Made it boring and repetitive. Also the action scenes in 2D were so blury you couldn't see anything.

I expect this one to be the film to dethrone Iron Man 3.

@Crimson I thought it was good. Action scenes were awesome in my opinion. I do agree it was repetitive though.

Guaranteed to make over $1 billion. Guaranteed. And when the 3rd comes out next year? Oh boy. Not that I think it deserves that much money, but no doubt it'll be financially successful.

Don't quote me on this, but I think I remember reading somewhere that when you factor in inflation and increased costs for things like CGI, it made less than what the Fellowship of the Ring made.

I'm old school. The original Rankin-Bass cartoon was good enough for me. After seeing the first movie of the this trilogy, I'm in no hurry to see the remaining two parts. There was just too much noticeable CGI and the make up looked poorly done compared with the LOTR trilogy.

@ckal

Well, based on everything I read I'd say you won't be happy - everything is now an action scene. But there's also emotion, especiall involving characters that aren't from the book.

Okay, I might be too negative here. Also haven't seen the movie myself, yet. Beorn looks ridiculous, though.

Waiting for the "Floppit" jokes like last year.

I enjoyed the first but agree about the ill-conceived roller coaster scene. The movie was lengthy enough to avoid such moments.

I really cant wait to see this in theaters when it's released here.

I loved the first film even though the beginning was slow but i've read in reviews that this installment picks up the pace.
