Taking a sharp object out of Halloween 2018's toolbox, the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie will serve as a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's horror classic. Check out some stills...

If David Gordon Green's 2018 Halloween revival proved anything, it's that you can't keep a good masked maniac down. Leatherface is set to follow Michael Myers' lead by returning to stalk and dismember a whole new generation of victims in Legendary's Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and we have a first look at some promo stills courtesy of EW.

The images give us an obscured glimpse of the power tool-wielding killer (Mark Burnham, replacing the late Gunnar Hansen) along with his fresh batch of potential victims, played by Sarah Yarkin, Elsie Fisher, Nell Hudson, and Jacob Latimore.

"It's basically the same character, who is still alive," says producer Fede Álvarez of the hulking brute. "Our take on it was this guy probably disappeared after everything he's done. You know, how do you catch a guy who has a mask? Once he removes the mask and runs away, it's very easy for him to hide somewhere. This story will pick it up many, many years after the original story. He's been in hiding for a long, long time, trying to be a good person. These people arriving in this town are going to awaken the giant."

Though this movie is described as a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's '70s classic, it won't necessarily ignore the events of the other TCM entries that followed.

"When I say 'direct sequel' I wouldn't say it skips everything," Álvarez explains. "When movies do that, sometimes it feels a bit disrespectful to all the other films. Some people love Texas Chainsaw 2. I love a lot of things about that movie — it's so wacky and of its time. But the rest is such a mess canon-wise. I think it's up to you to decide when and how the events of the other movies happen."

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is set to premiere on Netflix on February 18. Check out the images below, and let us know what you think.

I'm not the most up to date on this franchise, but wasn't the last reboot with Alexandria Dadario supposed to be a direct sequel to the original?

I do love horror, so we'll see

@DannRamm113 - Yes and that one did spawn a kinda prequel called Leatherface which is just plain freaking bad and should be avoided at absolutely all costs in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

@HeavyMetal4Life - if only my boys Freddy and Jason would finally claw their way out of legal limbo back to the current zeitgeist.

They're both SO ripe for sequels.
Freddy's head can land in the hands of a crazed psych doctor and infect kids with his essence while Jason is, canonically, still alive and well.

Just ignore the reboots (although the F13 remake was certainly not as bad as most remakes out there, but that's because that was more of a best-off film rather than a remake)

@Blergh -
This is all correct except for Timeline 4. Fede Alvarez explicitly says this movie doesn't necessarily skip anything, so this could easily be in Timeline 1 or 3 (or a weird amalgamation of both) for all we know. In this movie, they are being intentionally vague about it.

Only the original is worth watching. I did a marathon of all the Texas chainsaws recently, and it's stupid how bad it became. That first movie is an arthouse masterpiece

Horror movies have been doing variant timelines since before the MCU even started. Except the reason for them doing it was because sequels sucked

I'm not personally a fan of the Leatherface character, I just don't find him very interesting. And all of the crappy films in the franchise don't really help. Maybe they'll finally deliver something worth watching.

But, and I said this on the Scream article (so just re-upping that comment), its a great time for some of the OG slashers to be slaying it with audiences on the screen.

@HeavyMetal4Life -

Leather face is cool but for some reason they cant get him right. The 2000's remake was really great. What did you think of that film?

@Dannywest - yeah we are. I would love for them to do one final Freddy film with Robert Englund reprising his role.

For Jason, well it does not seem like the rights issue will be resolved anytime soon. And some of the ideas various writers/directors have had for the future of the franchise are honestly wack. But, to be honest, the future of the franchise right now is the Never Hike Alone fan film series. Not sure if you've seen those films, but they are really good (especially the first one; if you haven't seen them, I recommend watching the Ghost Cut they put together of the first two films, making them a single feature length movie), and they have 3 more on the way. Great depiction of Jason. Its canon in my head (and among a lot of Jason fans)- the NHA stuff is really a direct sequel to Part 6: Jason Lives, but I asked the director and he said that the NHA stuff treats everything up through Part 8 as canon.

@HeavyMetal4Life - 'Ash vs. Freddy & Jason' was in active developement after the success of FvJ but for some reason the whole project fell appart.
Allegedly because Miller already reeked his head and legal claws back in 2004

I know it's just some photos, but I'm not impressed. Also Alvarez's comment about Leatherface being a regular guy makes no since. The first TCM showed that Leatherface has a mental disability and physical deformity (why he wears a mask) and he was obviously being manipulated by his family because of his disability. Know were supposed to believe hes just a guy who's been living a regular life all these years.

Also slight nitpick but I wish Leatherface had more weight to him, hes always physically been big, that's the best thing about the remake is the guy who played Leatherface was built like a tank.

The last one was terrible. They find a baby in the mid 70s then flash forward to 2013 and the baby is a fully grown woman in her 20s? She should have been in her mid 40s. Apparently whomever was casting that movie was an idiot.
