With Halloween Kills nearly upon us, it's been a good week for horror movie previews, and following yesterday's big Scream trailer, Blumhouse has shared the first official trailer for Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone, which will see 4x Academy Award-nominee Ethan Hawke (Moon KnightTraining Day) tackle the most terrifying role of his career.

The film sees Derrickson return to his horror roots and is his first directorial project since 2016's Doctor Strange. He was initially developing this film at the same time he was in pre-production on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but after leaving the Marvel Studios sequel over creative differences, he opted to move full steam ahead with this project.

Derrickson co-wrote the screenplay with frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill (Doctor StrangeSinister). They are adapting the award-winning short story of the same name by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts

In addition to Hawke as The Grabber, the cast features Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone.

The Black Phone opens in theaters on February 4, 2022.

The phone is dead. And it’s ringing.

Director Scott Derrickson returns to his terror roots and partners again with the foremost brand in the genre, Blumhouse, with a new horror thriller.

Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.

I really hope his Bermuda project is still going to be made with Evans set to star.

Would love to see his horror take on the Bermuda Triangle!

Getting some Split meets The Devil's Backbone vibes.

Looks really good. Dig Derrickson's work a lot, Cargill's one of my heroes, and I don't think I've ever seen Ethan Hawke play a role quite like this one before.

And it's based on a short story by Joe Hill (Stephen King's son), who also wrote Locke & Key and Horns.

If you haven't seen the movie of Horns, go watch it. Really underrated, cool little flick.

@MUTO123 - Radcliffe has really gone out of his way to distance himself from Harry Potter, and I for one appreciate the depths he's gone to. Swiss Army Man was amazingly weird in the first five minutes and didn't really relent the rest of the way.

They almost showed the entire movie in the trailer. Looks decent though. Hawke gonna carry for sure. Unlike anything he’s done.

The Babadook mask is a nice touch. Not sold on the "Grabber" name, though I guess it's not the worst nickname a serial criminal could get hoisted on them, eh Brick Moron?

No article for Home Sweet Home Alone? 😩😭

The Black Phone looks good, have a feeling the RT score is going to plummet because I’m not sure why only 5 critics were screened it.

Trailer has my attention though, hope this is a return to form for Derrickson. Only movie I’ve loved from him is Sinister, and even that film wasn’t wrapped up super tight.

I found both Sinister and Doctor Strange to be underwhelming in their own rights. This does look pretty good though, if not a bit typical for the genre.

Finally. A new Thriller/Horror with a unique story, villain, concept, and not another damn Ghost or Demonic possession movie.

@SonOfAGif - I love me a good ghost movie and Conjuring 1 and 2 are my favorite horror movies.

But this definitely feels super unique because there is some sort of supernatural aspect to it on top of the terror of abduction.

@Menks123 - It could be supernatural or even extraterrestrial that's how unique the trailer was. Gave some real cool Stranger Things vibes as well.

@SonOfAGif - Its ghost but not the, "white genérico Suburban people moves to haunted House and loads of jumpscares"

@YonnyLayna - Which is exactly what Hollywood seems to do with every single ghost film or ghost tv series they create and it's just so overdone at this point. I'm glad the Slasher genre is back again with Halloween Kills and Scream. Hopefully The Black Phone opens the door for more obscure horror/thrillers. I can't wait for creature features to return. Fortunately What We do in the shadows is filling that void for me.
