Matt Smith (Last Night In Soho) has finally shared some details on his scrapped role in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, revealing that his part would have represented "a big shift" in the franchise.

Prior to the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, a rumor did the rounds that former Doctor Who Matt Smith had landed a key role in the final part of the sequel trilogy. This was backed up by some solid sources, but when he didn't appear, we assumed the reports were bogus.

Well, Smith has now confirmed that he was indeed in line to appear in the movie before his character was deemed "obsolete." At the time, there was speculation that the Last Night In Soho actor might be playing either a younger clone of Emperor Palpatine or his son, and while Smith declines to reveal his character's identity, he does admit that his role was pretty important.

"I could not possibly say, but it was a pretty groovy thing," he tells Josh Horowitz during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "It was a big story detail, like a, you know, transformative Star Wars story detail but it never quite got over the line. It was a big shift in the history of the franchise... there was no costume (test), there were a couple of meetings to talk about it. Maybe I can come back, you never know.”

Smith's reluctance to divulge any more information is a little odd when you consider the movie came out over two years ago, but maybe he was asked to keep his character under wraps because there are plans to revisit him down the line. A Palpatine clone of some sort still seems like a fairly safe bet, but there are obviously plenty of other possibilities.

What do you guys think? Smith can currently be seen in Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho, and has a role in the upcoming Morbius movie. He will also appear on the small screen in next year's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon.

He DOES have kind of a young Ian McDiarmid thing going on.

@MUTO123

That’s who I figured he’d play. If they couldn’t get Ian.

@regularmovieguy - That honestly would’ve been more interesting that what we got (McDiarmid even seemed like he was kinda sleepwalking through TROS). Bringing back the Emperor in any form was gonna be a cheap move, but Smith would’ve at least been something different.

Speaking of Smith, what’d you think of Soho?

Really, really enjoyed it. Thomason Mackenzie was perfectly cast imo, as was Diana Rigg and ATJ.

My buds loved it, too. We’ve been texting each other lyrics from Downtown for the last 24 hours 😂

If I had one thing to be disappointed in, it was the look of the men in suits. Little too CGI dependent and not super unsettling.

But we really dug it. The visuals, editing, the music…all exceptional and to be expected from Edgar Wright.

Also expected a bit more humor from the movie given his past work but I was pleasantly surprised to see it was kept to a minimum.

@regularmovieguy - Yeah, any complaints I have are minor. The soundtrack’s awesome, it looks amazing, the performances are spectacular (especially Thomasin; I can’t say enough positive things about her), and it’s great to see Edgar Wright expand his range as a filmmaker. Definitely wanna go see it again.

@MUTO123

Absolutely. I agree with all of that. I saw it at a Cinemark pretty close by but I’m back on the AMC A-List train so I need to put that baby to use.

Would like to catch it again before it leaves theaters.
