Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn has revealed what input he had in the team's role in Thor: Love and Thunder as that will obviously be where the team appears next before his threequel.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set between the events of Avengers: Endgame and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and if the movie's recent trailer is any indication, it will feature the God of Thunder parting ways with the MCU's biggest A-Holes. We're anticipating the team playing a key role in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok sequel, but what sort of input did James Gunn have on the film?

Avengers: Infinity War killed off Gamora, only for Avengers: Endgame to bring her 2014 Variant into the present-day MCU. That and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's lingering plot threads no doubt mean Gunn had to have at least some input into the team's portrayal in Thor: Love and Thunder, and the filmmaker recently took to Twitter to clarify what role he had in shaping their portrayal in the movie.

It's a short and to the point answer, but one that makes perfect sense. It can't be easy to coordinate all these characters when they're appearing in multiple movies, especially when Gunn no doubt has very specific ideas for his threequel. Of course, he worked with Waititi on The Suicide Squad (the filmmaker made a cameo appearance as the original Ratcatcher), so we're sure the two directors had no issue exchanging ideas to ensure everything we see makes sense and leads smoothly into what comes next.

We're excited to see more of the Guardians in Thor: Love and Thunder, and wouldn't be at all surprised if the movie concludes with a post-credits scene setting the stage for Vol. 3's release next year.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.

Not sure the younger people will get how this film seems to be about a mid-life crisis.

That feeling of looking at your life, and not entirely being happy with where you are. I know for me I had this huge urge to tear my whole life down and start over.

@Itwasme - I mean they made him a drunk fat slob, he should be having a mid life crisis.

@Itwasme - i think a Lot of young folks could relate, seeing everyone going places in live and don't knowing what to do or where to go can be similar to Thor place in this movie where he doesnt feel at Home being a Warrior so he tries to fit with the guardians but ultimately isnt his place, You can look at it both ways. You can also relate it to Thor always having his parents guidance and his brother company and now he is out on the world alone trying to figure out his place

@Itwasme - Well, I'm 31 and feeling the same urge, so I can relate

@McMurdo - it was a pretty bold and genius move, that's for sure. Plus from a story stand point, it avoided him from wielding the gauntlet which may/may not have had an impact they didn't want for his future stories.

@Polaris - the urge to binge eat or?

@McMurdo - I was going to say "to start over" but you know what? that too

@Polaris - to be fair, I did too in my younger years, but this was very different - so I guess you have something to look forward to?!?!?

I think part of it, is that at a later age you have a much bigger and stronger foundation to tear down. It's not just a feeling of wanting more, it was I need to sell my house, leave my family, leave my job... literally everything. I didn't... but it was overwhelming. I suppose i did change my work, but when people joke about buying a Porsche under a mid-life crisis, honestly it should be celebrated that that's all they did.

@Itwasme - what about it? When kids are watching any other Disney works there are jokes/themes tailored for the adults, not much difference here.
Itwasme

@TheGrayGhost - by younger people, I mean the 20 year olds who may miss the maturity of the story since its not a moody teenage drama.
TheGrayGhost

@Itwasme - You have a point there

@TheGrayGhost - I agree with you about it being a winning formula for studios (especially Pixar) to underlay very mature themes across kids movies. Many use things like overcoming loss, but Inside Out being a psychological case study is really nuts when you think about it. I can't think of another film that deals with emotional maturity to that level.

Sometimes people confuse a lack of humor for maturity.

@Itwasme - Completely agree that people confuse lack of humor for maturity.

I think/hope with this movie it may not go over the heads of the 20-somethings. I think they may relate more than some other age groups because that age group is going through a similar shift in life (finding their place, finding out things don't go as planned in life, etc). Plus with a theme of loss or moving on, everyone older than a toddler should relate to that after the last couple years.

Maybe I have too much faith in youth and general audiences.

@TheGrayGhost - hahaha... I find myself having too much faith in humanity every day.
TheGrayGhost
TheGrayGhost - 4/26/2022, 10:33 AM
@Itwasme - As futile as that may be, I'm happy we're on the side of having too much faith in humanity than the alternative

Plenty of crap out there but there's good out there too, just isn't nearly as loud

@TheGrayGhost - cheers to that! I'm kinda fundamentally an optimist and I worry about my own sanity of I wasn't.

Be good out there. It makes a difference, even if it's not easy to see.

James Gunn gets what he wants now, post being humiliated. Taika is a discount James and must adhere to cbm darling James' every whim.
Havenless
Havenless - 4/24/2022, 1:17 PM
@McMurdo - that’s a bit of a stretch. He had input on Infinity War too, where the Russo’s are much bigger Marvel darlings and we’re hired on pre-Gunn.

They’re just letting him have some ownership over his character writing.
WakandanQueen
WakandanQueen - 4/24/2022, 1:53 PM
@McMurdo - Bruh, Gunn had input on Infinity War, so did Waititi and Coogler.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 4/24/2022, 2:03 PM
@McMurdo - They have similiar styles, Taika is not a "discount James Gunn".

And as Taika said when they offered him to make Guardians 3; "those are James's characters", so just as he wrote their dialogues in Infinity War, he is more than likely doing the same here.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 4/24/2022, 2:34 PM
@Havenless - Russos will always be known as the two directors of Infinity War. They've peaked.
TheGrayGhost
TheGrayGhost - 4/24/2022, 9:25 PM
@McMurdo - Russo’s>Gunn>Waititi>Watts>the other MCU directors…that’s the hierarchy at the moment it seems but could certainly change

James Gunn never made Jojo Rabbit.

@McMurdo - marvel's not looking to piss off any director, especially one with multiple projects in the qeueu like Gunn... especially if they are minor changes.
ModHaterSLADE
ModHaterSLADE - 4/24/2022, 1:13 PM
Well that's good the characters are staying in line with the GOTG movies. I wouldn't mind Waititi doing a GOTG project one day with a new roster.
TheHumanSpider2

@ModHaterSLADE - He refused, he considers them James's characters.

I wonder if the Guardians will just ditch Thor or they will separate on good terms.
TheHumanSpider2

@TheSuperMex - Quill seems pretty tired of him from what we saw in the trailer.
JonC
JonC - 4/25/2022, 11:59 AM
@TheSuperMex - i am sure Thor will grow out of them after a while, his role is far larger in the galaxy than others, right now he just needs friends, flawed friends that understand where he is coming from.

Costume choice on the guardians is lackluster this time around. And they put rocket back into an orange jumpsuit. Kind of odd

@JFerguson - Personally I think their Endgame funeral attire was perfect. I love them in the sleek black outfits with their colors making them pop.
