New TITANS Pilot Details Revealed And It Sounds Like It Will Be Even Darker Than BATMAN v SUPERMAN - SPOILERS
An early review for Titans has surfaced and the signs are pointing to us not only getting a very dark take on the DC Comics property but also one that homages the source material in some exciting ways...
While all the signs are pointing to the DC Films Universe moving away from the dark tone which was established by movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, it looks like the DC Universe streaming service will be embracing that in a big way. An early, spoiler-laden review for Titans has popped up online this weekend and, well, there's lots here to talk about before it premieres.
As well as Robin's relationship with Batman, we learn more about characters like Raven and Starfire, not to mention some big changes to Dick Grayson and some big hints about the show's villains.
To check out a breakdown of the show's pilot episode, all you guys have to do is click on the "View List" button. There's nothing here which will outright ruin things for you but these details give us a better idea about what to expect. So, take a look and then let us know your thoughts in the usual place.
It's R-Rated And Dark In Tone
While the Teen Titans have typically been portrayed in quite a light and comedic fashion, Titans is anything but. Apparently, there are multiple F-Bombs and S-Bombs, while the action is described as being seriously brutal with snapping bones, blood, and, well, some people even get mangled!
It's not quite as adult in tone as Jessica Jones but it is considerably darker than anything else DC Entertainment has produced for television. However, before you go expecting a very grounded take on these characters, it's said that Titans doesn't shy away from embracing the comic book roots of these characters and "it doesn't ever really aim to be realistic." Sounds good so far, right? Keep reading...
Introducing The Heroes
It's said that the pilot puts the spotlight on three heroes: Robin, Raven, and Starfire. However, things kick off with a flashback as we pay a visit to The Flying Graysons and the night Dick Grayson's parents were killed. We also get a taste of Raven's "unstable psyche and untapped power." It sounds like she has a deeply disturbed and demonic individual residing inside her and everyone is aware of how strange she is. We see that she's bullied in school and it sounds like that will play a big role in her arc.
It's also said that her introduction leads to the appearance of a mysterious hitman known as The Acolyte. Not much is revealed about what he's up to but he "prompts some change within Rachel’s life that launch the entire show into motion." Needless to say, fans are sure to have some theories!
Robin Hates Batman
When we meet Dick Grayson, he's left Gotham City and is now based in San Francisco. He hated the Caped Crusader for reasons which aren't elaborated on but it sounds like he's afraid of becoming like Bruce Wayne. Surprisingly, this version of the character is working as a police detective but he doesn't play well with others and has shut himself off with the world after working with the Dark Knight.
Why he hasn't ditched the Robin persona to become Nightwing isn't clear but that could be something which happens over the course of the season, especially as we know Jason Todd will be showing up.
What's The Deal With Starfire?
There's been a lot of controversy surrounding set photos showing Starfire's rather unique look but it turns out that there's an explanation for that. The reason she looks like she's stepped out of the 1970s is because she attended a disco party shortly before getting in a car crash while being chased down by some armed goons. Her mission also looks set to intertwine with the other Teen Titans members.
It's said that she can speak multiple languages and has a number of passports. Her powers, meanwhile, are portrayed very similarly to her comic book counterpart which is bound to please many fans.
How Things Wrap Up
Apparently, the end of the pilot features some huge surprises and what the site describes as, "The absolute greatest, the most jaw-dropping moment of the pilot happens here, and it’s so good." That's presumably referring to some sort of big reveal about who the show's lead villain will be but it seems we'll have to wait and see. The reviewer's overall impression seems to be very good so it doesn't sound like the show is going to disappoint when it hits the DC Universe streaming service later this year.
