With the help of Nexon, Marvel has launched Marvel Battle Lines, yet another mobile game inspired by their beloved comic book franchises. Though we’ve known about this game for quite some time now, today marks its official launch on iOS and Android.

While there’s no shortage of Marvel-based mobile games out in the market, Marvel Battle Lines establishes a foothold in the digital card battling genre - a game category that the popular brand hasn’t explored too much of in the past. In the game, players compete with a custom deck of 12 character and ability cards inspired by iconic Marvel superheroes and villains. But what really sets Marvel Battle Lines apart from other mobile titles in the card battling genre is its actual gameplay mechanics, which involves battling your opponent on a 3x4 grid and creating “battle lines” to deal damage.

The goal of a match is to strategically place cards in consecutive order on the 3×4 grid that makes up the field of play to create powerful battle lines and combinations that will damage their opponent’s health meter. Players will begin each turn with four cards in their hand and have the ability to swap their cards, play an action card or end their turn by either placing a character card in the field of play or moving a card already deployed to an adjacent tile to attack an opponent’s card. The first player to bring their opponent’s health meter to zero using combinations of battle lines with their deck of characters – three across, three adjacent, four down, an L-shape, etc. – will win the match.

In addition to competitive multiplayer, Marvel Battle Lines also features an extensive single-player campaign with an original story created by Marvel writer Alex Irvine. There are over 100 digital cards you can collect inspired by Marvel’s beloved and diverse roster of characters. There’s quite an assortment to choose from when building your deck, including a nice mix of popular characters and some of the lesser known ones.

What truly makes Marvel Battle Lines stand out, though, is its impressive visuals. The custom character art has been created in collaboration with Marvel exclusively for the game. The unique gameplay is bolstered by vibrant and explosive action sequences that seem to jump from the page of a comic book straight to your mobile device.

A hype trailer for Marvel Battle Lines accompanied today’s launch, but you should really watch this gameplay video for a better idea of what to expect from the game.

The Cosmic Cube has been shattered, plunging the Marvel Universe into chaos! Now, you must join forces with Super Heroes and Villains, including the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, and more, to collect the shards and restore the universe. Collect over 100 of your favorite Marvel character playing cards including Captain America, Thor, Daredevil, Venom, Doctor Strange and Thanos. Build your perfect deck and send characters into action in single-player mode, or go head-to-head with players across the globe in pulse-pounding PVP competition. Set your strategy and send them into action in this legendary card collecting battle game.

You can download Marvel Battle Lines for free on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android.

Could people not buy these to force more developers to make decent games based on comicbook characters.

I love how the first bit of gameplay we saw was the Carol card beating the living shit out of the Thanos card lol A little taste of things to come.

It’s pretty fun. I probably lost like 3 hours today playing it. Not much experience with these types of games, but making the “deck” is fun to try and get the best out of what you’re doing is a challenge. The story is only 3 chapters right now so that went quick, but there’s challenges that are stupid hard right now trying to 3* them.

Looks like it will be a nice little time waster app, but not does it eat your battery. Def make sure you’re using it while nearby your charger lol.

@mkilban2 - just to add a few more things. Of course there’s in app purchases for character cards and stuff, but at least at the moment I see no real reason for them. Maybe if PvP becomes a big thing about it, but overall it’s fun.

Once again, no X-Men nor Fantastic Four in sight. Disappointing.

Marvel has yet made a good iOS game. Yeah there’s that one but the rest had or rehash of the previous one. Contest of champions was good. Alright played it once.

Marvel War of Heroes was an awesome card game ap that they discontinued for stupid reasons.
After they shut down that games server I vowed to never get invested in any ap games again.
