X-MEN '97's Fired Showrunner Beau DeMayo Reveals Extent Of His Involvement In Upcoming Season 2 X-MEN '97's Fired Showrunner Beau DeMayo Reveals Extent Of His Involvement In Upcoming Season 2

Beau DeMayo and Marvel Studios went their separate ways shortly before X-Men '97 season 1 premiered and the showrunner has now revealed the extent of his involvement in the second batch of episodes...

Right before X-Men '97 launched on Disney+, the trades broke the news that Head Writer Beau DeMayo had been fired from the animated series.

Interviews with the press were cancelled at the last minute and no specific reason for his ousting was ever revealed from official (or unofficial) sources. Making it all the more surprising was the fact Marvel Studios had previously tapped DeMayo to contribute to projects such as Moon Knight and Blade

Brad Winderbaum, the head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios, then shared something of a clarification by addressing the situation ahead of the two-episode premiere.

"I can't talk about the details," he admitted, "but I can say that Beau had real respect and passion for these characters and wrote what I think are excellent scripts that really the rest of the team were able to draw inspiration from [to] build this amazing show that's on screen."

Asked if he would consider DeMayo's MCU departure a firing, Winderbaum replied, "I don't. 'We parted ways' is the best way I could say."

In recent weeks, DeMayo has broken his silence on social media by sharing key insights into the X-Men '97's first season. He's never directly addressed why he and Marvel Studios "parted ways," but has received widespread acclaim for a show which has been singled out as being among the MCU's best small screen offerings.

When a fan wondered how much he contributed to the upcoming second season, DeMayo responded, "I did write a lot of season 2. However, unlike Season 1, I will not be heavily involved or leading production, cast records, design, editorial, post, music, etc., nor doing any production rewrites as it relates to the creative vision of the show."

"This is why I’ve said I can’t really speak to Season 2. But, looking forward to seeing the final product with you all whenever it airs. I have high hopes."

We don't entirely know what this means for X-Men '97 moving forward or whether losing DeMayo's voice will negatively impact the series. Based on many of his recent X posts, he was definitely the main creative force behind much of what we've seen, anyway.

X-Men '97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

All episodes of X-Men '97 are now streaming on Disney+.

Oh boy, may need to lower expectations for season 2 and beyond

If the reason was his OF then dumb decision.

Although the pace was rather break neck compared with the original show, it has def been entertaining to say the least.

@MuadDib - if he was let go for breaking the social media policy it's an employee issue. If they start playing favorites then the rest of the Disney employees start to cry foul. What about Gina Carano? What's the message for someone like her who it sounds like also broke the policy, but in a different way?

Playing favorites creates huge employee issues.

@Itwasme - It seems he wasn't though. As much as it sounds murky, does no one feel maybe he was just uncomfortable working for them anymore? All things I've heard is just they parted on personal terms. Could be a plethora of factors that DeMayo and Disney not want to be public. Changing the leadership back and forth, bullying VFX employees and the sacking of Victoria Alonso? Doesn't sound too nice there.

I'll give you a case; I'm in Northern Ireland and there is still rampant sectarianism in Belfast. No matter what politicians say. I had to leave a job two years ago after two weeks because the company was filled with West Belfast people and they shunned and alienated me because I was from the East. I actually had to leave for my safety and that was considered 'personal terms'.

@bcom can clarify this to you as well, but it's no joke and a very real issue.

@Itwasme - Also, with Gina. Apparently gave her quite a few warnings before the sacking. I like fair play in disputes, but if she was flagrantly crossing the line of company behaviour, then maybe it was time. I don't think she did anything that bad to get the boot though. And, like you said, some others don't get sacked for similar reasons that were made public.

@Sabre81 - you're right in thatbwe don't know, but they had a bit of a back and forth with it and the rumor was always that they gave him warnings and then found it.

Not sure that's true, but if it is that would he online with Gina.

We don't really know though.

She was antagonistic towards fans and continued to stir up controversy over and over. Different reasons, but they'd still be part of the same policy and both are about drawing unwanted attention and reputational risk.

@Itwasme - Well. rumours are rumours. But if Gina was a prick and stirring shit up then she had to go. I wouldn't tolerate that kind of behaviour with my team.

She was a fighter. I've worked with fighters (in menial jobs that I do) who have never had the mentality or emotional skills to leave the ring and try be someone else. They are always aggressive and have nature to get their back up when challenged. Could be Gina's story.

WarMonkey

@Itwasme - @Sabre81 - Gina was fired because of the social media post warning about cancel culture then refused to do a bullying session where they wanted her to go in front of a bunch of Far-Left people to bitch at her in a struggle-session. So she was fired and then others started pushing narratives and rumors that weren't true like y'all are doing here.

I don't sway to the winds of whispers that hurt someone's career or life. Those wannabes jumping on the bandwagon of rumour are just scum. If there is enough evidence to show that person is wrong...then they're wrong. If it is just hearsay, nonsense and gossip? Then let it ride over intelligent ears and minds.

I don't hate anyone.

I wonder if they pull a James Gunn and bring him back? People didn’t really seem bothered by his news coming out and now that everyone loves the show if Season 2 isn’t an absolute banger Disney is going to have a lot of egg on its face for firing him
GhostDog
GhostDog - 5/17/2024, 6:22 PM
@Ha1frican - was it ever definitively said that it was due to the nudes or OF?? I think it was speculated but we never got official word from the trades or Disney.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 5/17/2024, 6:34 PM
@GhostDog - ONLY been online speculation, ZERO official word on the reason at all, not even the trades have given any indication of a reason at all beyond maybe some stating what folk are speculating about online.

@Ha1frican - im doubting this. Gunn had the support of his whole cast, people who have influence in the industry.

De Mayo on the other hand only has the fans.

And also, this is only a series and dont get much return as compared to a successful movie franchise

He'll be back for season 3, I assume by the winter they'll make the announcement, or perhaps right before the premiere if season two. He's way too valuable at this point, he has crazy leverage like Gunn did for Vol. 3
McMurdo
McMurdo - 5/17/2024, 7:09 PM
@bobevanz - not if he pulled a cringe move on someone. If it's only fans then I agree. But I just doubt they fired him for his man breast being visible on the internet.

Wow.

The praise this thing is getting is solely attributed to him.

I want to believe Disney will turn around the MCU, but not having him back after WIDESPREAD acclaim is a mistake that will cost them.

Fix it all. Starting with him.

He must've done something egregious for them to fire him right before the debut of this show, which makes people crying for him to be rehired even more pathetic. Get over it already.
Trueruru
Trueruru - 5/17/2024, 8:12 PM
He probably got fired because he refused to include the latest MCU stale characters like the Marvels or Agatha. I don't care what he did or who he offended, he and his team need to be promoted to do the live action films, or at least have him make animated X-movies. I would love to see him do a two and a half hour movie like The Phalanx Covenant, Generation X, Second Coming, Children of the Vault, X-Cutioner's Song, Astonishing X-Men, Hunting Vulcan, there are hundreds of amazing stories that don't connect with the MCU or need any involvement with the Avengers that can be turned into animated films by Beau.
