The road to Superman Returns was a torturous one, with many filmmakers and scripts being involved over the years. This interview with Kevin Smith was conducted prior to his film Dogma being released, when the frustrations of writing Superman Lives were still very real. At the time, reports were that Tim Burton would be directing the film, Nicolas Cage would be playing Superman and Kevin Spacey would be cast as Lex Luthor. As fans well known, Spacey is the only member of that particular triumvirate to make his way into what ultimately became Superman Returns.
