Warner Bros. Animation has finally unveiled some promo images for Prime Video's Batman: Caped Crusader, which has been confirmed as a '40s-set period piece...

After originally being developed for the HBO Max streaming service, Batman: Caped Crusader found a new home on Prime Video early last year, and we finally have a first look at the highly-anticipated animated series.

Bat-fans have been anxiously awaiting a teaser for the show, and while we may have to wait a little longer, EW has now debuted a batch of images spotlighting the Dark Knight and some very different takes on several of his villains.

While speaking to the site, Bruce Timm and character designer James Tucker noted that they decided to make the new show a '40s-set period piece in an effort to set it apart from the original '90s Batman: The Animated Series.

“James and I are both really big fans of movies from that era, so we decided to really lean into that in terms of the clothes, the cars, the architecture, and the level of technology,” said Timm. “Early on, we decided there would be no computers and no cell phones. That changed everything.”

Another big change is this show's incarnations of some of Batman's most popular bad guys, including an Asian American version of Harley Quinn - who also happens to be Bruce Wayne's therapist!

“I co-created the character, so I have a lot of love and affection for her, but I thought there might be something interesting about bringing her on the show, just not as Joker’s girlfriend,” Timm says. “So how do we do that? A big part was just doing a basic flip. The original Dr. Quinzel was a little bit more serious, and then when she became Harley, she got really goofy and weird. So we thought, what if we reverse that? When she's Dr. Quinzel, she's a little bit more whimsical and fun, and then when she's Harley Quinn, she's scary.”

“He's a really weird human being,” says Timm of Wayne and his need for therapy. “He's not obsessed with his parents' murder, but it changed him in a way where he’s still not adjusted to being a human being. He's literally Batman; inside, that's who he is. Whenever he's Bruce Wayne, that's not just him with a mask off, that's him wearing a person suit. He's trying to pretend to be something that he's not.”

Clayface and Catwoman will also be quite different to modern interpretations, but in their case, the makeovers will actually bring them more in line with their original comic book appearances.

"We didn't want to do the B:TAS Catwoman or the version that Ed Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke did in the early 2000s with the practical leather jumpsuit, which has become her default look in the comics and movies," Timm continues. "That's great, I love that, but we wanted to do something different. So we thought, well, let's go all the way back to the beginning. I love the original look that she had in the '40s. It's purple!"

Batman: Caped Crusader is set to premiere on Prime Video on August 1. The show has already been renewed for a second season.

Batman looks great. A shame they race replaced Gordon and Harley Quinn, they should really just use a nonwhite character if they don't like the race of an existing one.

It is funny, this year we have X-Men, Batman, and Spider-Man all back on TV. What decade is this? It's like the 90s reborn in a way. Cool.

@abd00bie - The ones hung up on race are the people who insist on changing it.

What nonwhite characters would you like to turn white? Ya know, just for a change?

If there are none, and you just like to do it to whites, then you're just anti white.

@HermanM - in my opinion, the people
Who are upset by change are the one’s who are hung up on race. People just want to be represented. Years ago Marvel gave its fans a black spider-man. Initially people were upset there was a black spiderman but miles is now one of the most popular characters and it gave black kids someone they can look up to. There does need to be new characters of colors and representation but it really doesn’t hurt when a character is changed from white to a different color and vice a versa. There are so many characters that are white and different stories for different folks. Race swaps really don’t matter as long as they act like the character. In the live action little mermaid, Hailee did a wonderful job as Ariel. She really did portray the character well and has a beautiful voice. Those who didn’t like the performance is just being a hater for the sake of being a hater. In the scheme of things, this really is trivial. I’m more frustrated with the collar on the new Superman suit lol. For the record, it’s not “wrong” but aesthetically I just don’t like it.

@HermanM - someone who originally conceived the character do a different take in an alternate world.
HermanM
HermanM - 5/10/2024, 5:18 AM
@Epc11223 - "Just wanting to be represented" implies that no white person can ever relate to a nonwhite chatacter because they're not white, and no nonwhite person can ever relate to a white character because they're white, despite the many languages and nations that these characters are consumed in as products. Your argument doubles down on being hung up on race.

Secondly, it is not a "race SWAP" since nothing is being traded since "swapping" means an exchange is happening when that is not the case here. A white character isn't being traded with a nonwhite one to have their races changed, where, for instance, Comissioner Gordon will become black, but Lucious Fox will become white, Comissioner Gordon is just being made black.

In fact, every major white superhero has a nonwhite version of themselves that exists either as an alternate reality version, future version, or reboot, while there are no white versions of nonwhite characters, major or minor.

If you aren't willing to make any nonwhite character white but are only okay with changing the race of white characters, especially when whites are less than 9% of the world population, a global minority, and nonwhites do not care about representing white people within their own stories and media yet must be represented in ours, then you do not care about representation, you are just anti white.

Finally, changing the race of white characters does not make more seats at the table. It simply takes seats from white people and makes the world smaller, not larger.

The other thing that is out of place is that this is a period piece set in the 1940s America, but with the demographics and DEI hiring practices of America in the 2020s. Great care has been made to avoid things like cel phones in the new period piece show - which was not even the case with the original animated series and its made up retro-futuristic aesthetic - yet this new series, which boasts that it is going very hard on the era-specific stuff, is giving us a black police commissioner, which would not have been possible in the 1940s. Renee Montoya has also gone from being a white Latin woman to being an indian woman with a Latin name who also occupies a serious leadership position instead of simply being one of the officers, which also wouldn't have been possible in America in the 1940s for a number of reasons, pre sexual revolution being one of them. The race changes actually undermine its 1940s premise. And they're the doing of Abrams as the driving force, not Timm.

As for the collar on Gunn's Superman, it is wrong and ugly, and hopefully, the filmmakers will lose it because the rest of the suit looks fine otherwise.
HermanM
HermanM - 5/10/2024, 5:19 AM
@Slotherin - Alternate world is fine, but these changes have JJ Abrams fingerprints all over them moreso than Timm's.
Epc11223
Epc11223 - 5/10/2024, 6:07 AM
@HermanM - ah Shinzo, it’s been awhile. Getting upset over art which is subjective and making it sound like white people are losing power when in reality we still have the majority of the power in the world. Yeah, a black commissioner Gordon or a black Perry white is going to possible ruin a show or movie. It really is just sad with how people can be so narrow minded. If a white character changing to white is a serious problem for you, you must have an extremely wonderful life. Then you’re going to say that it’s a comic message forum, but this really is more than just comics. I really doubt making a black spider-man really brought less people into the comic world. We want more people reading and loving comics not the reverse. It would be great to have original characters as well, but to make such a fuss over a white character being black should be a non issue.
HermanM
HermanM - 5/10/2024, 8:35 AM
@Epc11223 - So black people didn't read Spider-Man when he was Peter Parker? They didn't watch and enjoy Batman when Comissioner Gordon was white? Asian people didn't watch Batman when Harley Quinn was white?

These are box checkers so you can signal to your bubble of signally friends how "progressive" you are. Actual nonwhite people are not any more or less moved by race changing Gordon or Harley Quinn. In fact, some of them may even be put off by it, check out the Chinese reviews of the awful Little Mermaid remake.

If race changes are nothing to be upset over, why don't you change some nonwhite characters into white ones then? Or, how about an actual swap: since Gordon is going to be black now, how would you feel about Lucius Fox being white then?

If whites, who are less than 9% of the world population, actually have all of the power in the world as you say, why is our media and culture constantly shitting on us in a way that it would get in trouble for doing to other races? Again, suggest race replacing nonwhite characters with white ones and see what kind of reaction you get, see if you would tell people to just accept it and get over it and that they're fragile for not liking it like you do when it is done to whites.
Epc11223
Epc11223 - 5/10/2024, 12:37 PM
@HermanM - Non white people may have enjoyed the stories and the characters but that doesn’t mean that that it resonated as much as when you can imagine yourself in those stories. Whether they’re black to white or white to black it really does not matter. If it’s an actor or actress, I want the best person for that part but I try to be open minded. You’re complaining just because it’s not exactly like the comics and we’ve had this discussion many times before. Comics and stories are always evolving. For you to complain about this is something trivial to be upset over. I don’t go by reviews because there’s plenty of people who are biased. Hailee had the voice and acting skills who portrayed the little mermaid wonderfully. But of course that’s just my opinion. No ones opinion is more right or wrong because we’re debating over art.

Slotherin - 5/10/2024, 12:53 PM
@HermanM - the Spawn movie literally whitewashed two black characters for fear that the film would be "too black"

@HermanM - "[Montoya] occupies a serious leadership position instead of simply being one of the officers, which also wouldn't have been possible in America in the 1940s for a number of reasons, pre sexual revolution being one of them."

That's a really good point right there. A double minority as Commissioner of Police? Not only is it an authority position, but it's both a legal and a political position too. No way this happens in 1940s America.
HermanM
HermanM - 5/10/2024, 2:36 PM

@HermanM - I personally wouldn’t care but do understand that there would probably be backlash. But with that said, two wrongs don’t make a right. If an actor or actress does a good job portraying the character, I’d be happy. I want a good story, good music, awesome visuals. I want to be entertained. I’m not beholden to the comics and keep an open mind. I may not like something but understand it’s art.

Epc11223
Epc11223 - 5/10/2024, 6:26 PM
@ObserverIO - no, I would say that Batman is just a character in a make believe world that has many different interpretations and no one interpretation is right or wrong. Comics are both art and entertainment and there’s really no need to get upset over a race swap. There’s more important things to get worked up over. Problem is people don’t like change and then end up ruining it for others.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 5/10/2024, 7:01 PM
@HermanM - a villain and a supporting character actually... I don't know why I bothered to inform you that it's happened... of course you'd just ignore it in favor of your list. My point was simply that your claim that it hasn't been done isn't entirely accurate.

I don’t know if white people are going to survive if there’s a black actor in the roles of Perry white, spider-man, jimmy Olson, etc. The creator of Harley Quinn is updating the character, I guess you’re going against the creator. Closed minded people are sad.
