Earlier today, Christopher McQuarrie, director of the critically acclaimed Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, confirmed that he will return for the upcoming sixth installment in Tom Cruise's long-running Mission: Impossible franchise.

Variety first broke the news that he was in talks with Paramount Pictures to pen the highly anticipated action sequel nearly two weeks ago, but weren't able to confirm at the time whether or not he would actually sit in the director's chair again. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has learned he will indeed direct the film along with writing and producing (with Cruise). McQuarrie now becomes the first director in the history of the franchise to helm a second Mission.

Mission: Impossible 6 is expected to kick off production in August 2016, although that date is subject to change. Franchise star Tom Cruise will return as Ethan Hunt and there is a relatively good chance we see at least a few returning faces, including Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Alec Baldwin, Paula Patton, and/or Maggie Q in the follow-up to Rogue Nation.

Check out McQuarrie's tweet below:

So, what do you guys think? Excited for the next Mission? Sound off with your thoughts below!

With the IMF disbanded, and Ethan (Tom Cruise) out in the cold, the team now faces off against a network of highly skilled special agents, the Syndicate. These highly trained operatives are hellbent on creating a new world order through an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Ethan gathers his team and joins forces with disavowed British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who may or may not be a member of this rogue nation, as the group faces their most impossible mission yet.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation features:
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt
Jeremy Renner as William Brandt
Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn
Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell
Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust
Alec Baldwin as Alan Hunley
Sean Harris as Solomon Lane
Simon McBurney as Attlee
Zhang Jingchu as Lauren
Jens Hultén as Janik "Bone Doctor" Vinter
Tom Hollander as the Prime Minister

@DrDoom YO. What the [frick] is up Doom? How was Thanksgiving bro? Mine was pretty damn good. Iv'e been working on my film school shit. I'm about 30 pages into a Friday The 13th script. Iv'e gotten my professor to read it, and he loved it. I might submit this shit to Paramount Pictures if possible :)

After finally watching Rogue Nation I thought that if they actually decided they must make an Uncharted movie someday McQuarrie would be a good choice as director.

@DrDoom Oh i'm a huge horror fan. The 1st movie iv'e ever saw as a kid was Nightmare On Elm Street. I ADORE the slasher genre. Don't worry I will get into my sci-fi and action/adventure scripts. But I feel like for whatever reason people kind of forget about horror films.

But i'm also learning about directing as well. My real dream is to direct movies. Writing is just part of the process. Best of luck man on ur movie and script as well :)

Ferguson was awesome, but I felt Rogue Nation was a bit of a letdown after Ghost Protocol. I also would like to see Jonathan Rhys Meyers back again.

I kind of wish McQuarrie would stretch his legs and try something different. This will be the third Tom Cruise action movie he's made in a row.

Hell yeah! Great news, MI5 was my favorite MI movie so far and my 3rd favorite film of the year after Mad Max and Ex Machina. Also bring back Rebecca Ferguson! She was amazing! :)

@scorpion8125

Dude MI:3 was dope. It had the best villain of the entire series with PSH (rest in peace good sir) and some pretty awesome action scenes.

MI:2 is the only film that's pretty awful.

I would have rather seen a new director as well, just to see the changes. We go from Brian De Palma, who is arguably the best director for MI, then John Woo, then JJ Abrahms, then Brad Bird, now Chris McQuarrie. Imagine if it was Phil Lord and Chris Miller
