It seems like most people are enjoying the nice weather instead of the latest cinema releases this weekend, because while Finding Dory has remained at #1 for a third week, newcomers The BFG and The Legends of Tarzan haven't done well. Earning $41.9 million, Pixar's sequel has now taken its domestic haul up to $372.2 million and looks set to end the four day weekend with $50.5 million.
Had The Legend of Tarzan not had a budget which ballooned to $180 million, it could very well have been considered a hit, but a debut with $38.1 million for the weekend and $44 million for the four days barely scratches the surface. It appears as if this is another 2016 movie which will only get a sequel if it makes up for its lacklustre performance at home by doing well overseas. Warcraft and Independence Day: Resurgence are in a similar position, with the latter struggling to reach $20 million by Monday.
Steven Spielberg's The BFG (an adaptation of the Roald Dahl children's book) has been the biggest failure though, crashing and burning wth $19.6 million over the weekend and $23.6 million by Monday. The ambitious movie cost over $140 million to make a reality, but it seems as if parents decided to take their kids to see Finding Dory instead. Now, The BFG looks to be one of Spielberg's biggest flops.
