In some totally left field news sure to please nostalgic nineties kids and little girls everywhere, Cartoon Network announced today that their iconic crime fighting trio, the Powerpuff Girls, will be making their triumphant return to television in 2016.

“The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide,” said Cartoon Network chief content officer Rob Sorcher, “We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X.”

Craig McCracken's 'The Powerpuff Girls' is one of Cartoon Network's most successful brands to date, with retail profits totaling over $2.5 billion. Endowed with the powers of sugar, spice, everything nice, and Chemical X (originally 'a can of whoop-ass'), the girls fought their way through seventy-eight television episodes, a feature film, an anime spin-off, and a one-off special earlier this year featuring former Beatle Ringo Starr.

Though its appearance may be shocking to some, this new incarnation of The Powerpuff Girls promises to offer something fresh in a largely male dominated marketplace of superheroes.

So what do you think, gang. Will you be returning to the city of Townsville in 2016? Sound off in the comments below.

@bluedude From the looks of things, they're preserving just about everything but the original art style. Personally just glad they're back at all. Probably the best Cartoon Cartoon.

Powerpuff Girls was a show I do remember watching and enjoying during its run on Cartoon Network. It's one of my favorite animated shows from the old CN, next to SWAT KATS.(90's kid, what can I say?) I'll give this a fair shake, not sure what to expect, but hopefully it will be enjoyable.

Right up there with Justice League as one of my favorite shows ever. It took parts of traditional superhero shows and magical girl anime added gratuitous violence, smart progressive writing, and clever pop culture references to make a female led series that kicked ass.

I still haven't watched the special that aired months ago but I heard positive things about it so I'll give this a chance. Personally, I'm more excited that a new show means there will be a new toyline and tons of merchandise made, yay!

I for one am excited about this. I remember watching it as a kid after Dexter's lab (which I think needs to come back as well) and before courage (another one that needs to come back). The special from a few months ago was really good and it felt like the original.

And oni I agree with you, swat kats was the shit. Also am I the only one that wants to see a hurculoids movie.
