These manga's have aspired to critically acclaimed greatness and if you're a big Anime fan and you haven't watched any of these, you better slap your self! No, I mean figuratively slap your self. The videos below will give you a glimpse of the manga animes (save you from reading my summary of them), in alphabetical order 1st up is,

Afro Samurai

He could kick Blade's ass with a finger, you need to also watch "Afro Samurai Resurrection" the sequel to this fantastic Anime.

Akira

Regarded has one of the best film animes of all time.

Fist of the North star

It also has a live action movie, this is the trailer for the revamped version you can also watch the old version online.

Karas:The Prophecy

In terms of the cinematography of animation this is up there with the likes of "Ghost in Shell" the graphics are amazing. It also has a sequel "Karas:The revelation".

My Neighbour Totoro

I watched this has a kid, the film won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize and the Mainichi Film Award for Best Film in 1988, like I said critically acclaimed stuff.

Ninja Scroll

This is where my love affair for Samurai genres stemmed, it won the Citizen's Award at the 1993 Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival.

Paprika

This is some out of this world animation I think the makers must have smoked a lot weed before making this because the ideas they came up with was just mind-blowing you need to see it to know what I mean.

Perfect Blue

Another classic anime that pays homage to the 90's, great plot, matter of fact great everything, I think it should be made into a real life movie.

Princess Mononoke

If you enjoyed star wars and star trek, you'll love this, just pure excellence.

Spirited Away

Can you believe this was made in conjunction with Disney, if you like fantasy and magic you'll love this, its brilliant. I regard it has the "wizard of Oz" of anime manga.

Sword of the stranger

Another great testament to Samurai genre anime's in fact one of the best.

Vampire Hunter D

This is one of the darkest, most accurate and action packed Vampire anime ever made.

Others worth mentioning (Grave of the fireflies, Howl's moving Castle, Strait Jacket, The Girl Who Lept Through Time, Castle in the sky etc) they didn't make the list because I haven't watched them yet, so what do you guys think I know am forgetting one (chuckles)

great list! i would have listed the original Ghost in the Shell, and its sequel (not the series), and Spriggan for sure, but i can't argue with any of them. These are what made Anime!!

now we have lame ass shit like Bleach and Naruto. We can thank the success of DBZ for that nonsense.

These are the OG's of anime! finally someone can recognize that!!!

props @ Solo!

Nice Job. It's great to finally see an anime list that includes "Fist of the North Star". I freakin loved that show growing up.

It's a shame that Street Fighter 2 isn't on the list. That double hadduken scene where Ken and Ryu beat Bison, is enough to put the film on any "best of" anime list.
Matador

Trigun and Berserk as series were pretty cool too.

Gantz was cool F'ed up though but cool.

This is not a "Best of" list. I haven't seen some of these titles so I can't comment on all of them, but this is more of a "Staple Anime" list. Afro Samurai doesn't even come close to belonging in this list.
I agree with Princess Mononoke, Akira, Totoro, Grave of Fireflies, and Ninja Scroll. But C'mon, no Evangelion? Kite? Samurai Champloo? Full Metal Alchemist?
Also, is this list for Anime films that came from Mangas? Or by Manga Productions? Or just loose usage?

Good list, but with respect to samurai animes, where I've already seen "afro samurai" and "Sword of the stranger" (last one best of both), you missed, for me at least, the best samurai anime movie/OVA, "Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen" (Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal), where plot, animation, photography and music is just outstanding (the soundtrack is really amazing). Graphics are different from TV serie (much much better), but plot is based completely in the original manga. If someone hasn't seen this movie yet, just do it. Here is a trailer
